Downs Link Cycle Trip. A guide to a Sussex Cycle path
Downs Link Cycle Trip A guide to Route 222
Welcome to this video/slide guide to the cycle route/ footpath and bridleway that runs between Chists Hospital and Shoreham in West Sussex.
This route is also know as cycle route 222.
The full route runs from Guildford to Shoreham and is known as the Downs Link. Another causality of the short-sighted Conservative government under Dr Beeching in the late 60's.
It is clear that had the railway line survived it would be an important line for many.
However we can still enjoy it today as this video will show.
The video is aimed at the amateur family cyclist and seeks to provide a guide that will allow people to feel confidant before setting out as they can know what to expect.
I had a great deal of help from the FaceBook group Disused railways of Sussex
Another great source of information can be had here:
Search for Shoreham for this route.
I hope you enjoy the video.

Downs Link Bike Ride
A bike ride along a short stretch of the Downs Link trail in the South Downs National Park, West Sussex, UK. Much of the trail follows the route of an old railway line.
Produced with CyberLink PowerDirector 14. Video shot using a Contour Roam 3 mounted on the front of a Voodoo Bantu MTB. (The mount worked loose during the ride, hence the video shake - it's been improved since, so hopefully the next vid will be better! :-O)

Downs Link Ultra
My attempt to do the whole of the Downs Link in a day on Jan 1st 2016. It's a bit over 37 miles from Guildford to Shoreham By Sea, station to station.
Downs Link by bike (5 of 9) - Copsale to Christ's Hospital (double speed)
The Downs Link uses two disused railway track-beds to link the South Downs Way and North Downs Way. To ride the whole track-bed one should begin at Shoreham-by-Sea and follow the path to Peasmarsh (south of Guildford).
Our video commences at Copsale and is bridged by the A24 before continuing via Southwater to Christ's Hospital where it meets the existing line from Chichester/Arundel to Horsham (on the left).
Also on this channel: Cuckoo Trail and Centurion Way. For the ultimate humorous cycling travelogue 'Stair-Rods and Stars' by Adam Colton is available in paperback and digital formats, documenting trips along disused rail lines, canals and ancient trails in Southern England.
Downs Link by bike (6 of 9) - Christ's Hospital to Rudgwick
The Downs Link uses two disused railway track-beds to link the South Downs Way and North Downs Way. To ride the whole track-bed one should begin at Shoreham-by-Sea and follow the path to Peasmarsh (south of Guildford).
After a diversion onto lanes, we pick up the track-bed of the second railway line (Christ's Hospital to Guildford). The Downs Link runs next to the original track-bed for a while and onto it properly before Slinfold. Later, we cross the A281, pass through Rudgwick village and the video ends where the Downs Link heads steeply upward while the track-bed continues unsurfaced, for a few hundred yards, towards a bricked-up tunnel.

Travel Vlog. South Downs Way Horsham to Shoreham by Sea/ Stop at Stan's Bike Shack
Cycling is freedom to explore faster where the car can not get.
Today I do a route from Horsham to Shoreham by Sea, 22km, from the Countryside to the sea using the South Downs Way. Video is in Spanish with subtittles in english.
I had the best coffee I have ever tried in England so far in Stand's bike shack, lovely place with live music, awesome location, best views, delicious food and incredible coffees. Don't miss it if you do the route guys!!!
Suscribe and see you soon in my next adventure exploring the World.
Downs Link by bike (7 of 9) - Rudgwick to Cranleigh (double speed)
The Downs Link uses two disused railway track-beds to link the South Downs Way and North Downs Way. To ride the whole track-bed one should begin at Shoreham-by-Sea and follow the path to Peasmarsh (south of Guildford).
This section climbs steeply (you will hear that the rider is on foot) to pass over the hill which the line tunnelled beneath. We pass into Surrey at the top, descend, re-join the track-bed and pass the former station at Baynards. The route is predominantly wooded as we continue to the large village of Cranleigh.
Jago rides the Downs Link
Mile 26 of the Downs Link from Guildford to Shoreham-by-Sea. We did 30 of 35 miles in a day and the only reason we didn't get all the way was because all the B&Bs in Shoreham were full! Finished the ride the following day and then cycled to Brighton to catch a train home. 45 miles in total.
what I learnt: Never underestimate what a 9 year old can do
quote of the trip: I love riding my bike daddy!
we loved it and are already planning the next trip!
