History of Mannu Palla Lake
Mannu Palla Lake is a man-made wonder. Around 1960, tile factories were established in Manipal and nearby regions. As the soil of this area around Manipal Lake had lots of clay at that time, it was continually removed from the lake region to prepare tiles. Gradually this resulted in the formation of a large pond where rain water would get collected. Later it took the shape of a lake. Manipal is situated 3 kilometers from the temple city of Udupi and is 65 km north of Mangalore. The name ‘Manipal’ is derived from ‘Mannu Palla’ Anglicized to Manipal. Mannu means soil and Palla means lake in Tulu Language. This lake due to which Manipal owes its name still has a pride of place in this university town and it offers boating facilities. Manipal was once a barren hill with trees here and there. This hill was transformed to a University town by Dr.T.M.A. Pai starting 1950’s.

Manipal University has set up a unique Dr. TMA Pai Chair on Indian Literature that will facilitate several cultural programs in Manipal over the next two years. As part of inaugural program of this Chair, there was a morning of curated musical performances on Sunday, April 19th, from 9:30 am to I pm (2015). The Chair is currently held by renowned Kannada writer Dr. Vaidehi at the Manipal Center for Philosophy and Humanities.
As part of the inaugural programme of the Dr TMA Pai Chair on Indian Literature in Manipal University, the citizens of Manipal and Udupi were privileged to witness a performance by illustrious septuagenarian and stage artist Subhadramma Mansur. She travelled from Bellary to Manipal, and gave a performance that made the audience full of nostalgia for the golden era of stage. Subhadramma began by giving a context to her work—she began aged barely twelve, and chiefly due to her family’s poverty. In Company theatre traditions, both acting and voice are prized—Subhadramma was initially chosen for her voice. Later on, she became famous for her acting too, in plays like Kurukshetra and RaktaRatri. Theatre became all-consuming—she even met her husband there, and her life was spent in famous companies like Hirannayya’s Theatre Company.Subhadramma rendered many songs, some which depicted lively episodes, while some depicted romance and bhakti in a classical mode.
The legendary Dr. Subhadramma Mansur performed her life story in song. At seventy five, Dr. Mansur is one of the most treasured theatre and vocal (dialogue and music) practitioners in India. Dr. Mansur began her career as a child artist, and has been performing to critical and popular acclaim for over six decades.
The performance took place at the Gangubai Hanagal Auditorium, Manipal Centre for Philosophy and Humanities, Dr. TMA Pai Planetarium Complex, Alevoor Road, Manipal.

As part of inaugural program of this Chair, there was a morning of curated musical performances on Sunday, April 19th, from 9:30 am to I pm. The Chair is currently held by renowned Kannada writer Dr Vaidehi at the Manipal Center for Philosophy and Humanities.
Mysuru Gururaj and his team of six performed on this occasion. Though traditionally these folk-songs can go on for ten nights, here the audience was treated to excerpts, which captured the flavour of the original custom. Though most of the songs had an overall spiritual context, many segments of the songs were full of humour and a back-and-forth between the singers. The singers were able to modulate their very powerful voice to sometimes seem delicate and hauntingly spiritual, and sometimes teasing and funny. Many of these almost forgotten songs were collected and introduced by well-known folklorist Dr. Krishnamurthy Hanur.
These performances took place at the Gangubai Hanagal Auditorium, Manipal Centre for Philosophy and Humanities, Dr. TMA Pai Planetarium Complex, Alevoor Road, Manipal.

The structures we live in and around tell tales of the art, culture, beliefs, taboos, habits, patterns, and choices of the times. The consumerism of today’s modern world doesn’t always do justice to the innumerable possibilities that the expressions of the individual or a community can churn out.
Traditional architecture is not just about manifestation/demonstration of creativity and craftsmanship of our ancestors but is the tangible cultural heritage of our country.
One man’s vision to ensure cultural continuity through the preservation of traditional structures and objects translated into a sprawling heritage village in Manipal. U Vijayanath Shenoy, the man behind the repository called the Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village, passed away on 9 March 2017. His legacy, however, will stand tall for many a decade to come.
What Vijayanath Shenoy, who could have been just another retired bank employee if not for his disapproval of the state of heritage structures, has left behind is a labour of love that gifts each and every visitor an experience of having landed a few centuries back in time. Every single visitor to the Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village is not just awestruck by the grandeur or the effort but also astonished in plain disbelief at the possibility of one man realising his dream in such a manner.
Rightly lauded as being to ‘built-architecture’ what A K Ramanujam was to literature, Vijayanath Shenoy, or Shenoy maam as he was fondly called, was equipped with nothing but his passion for heritage conservation. On this World Heritage Day, we can surely feel grateful to a man who literally gave his all to save the dying ‘vernacular architecture’.
A pioneer in the field, Shenoy’s inclination towards the arts saw him set up the Sangeeth Sabha in Udupi in the 1960’s. All his savings from his bank job would be spent in making these musical gatherings happen that saw the who’s who of music, be it Carnatic or Hindustani, perform in a town whose name was but another one in the map of coastal Karnataka. His association with music was from his days when he visited his friend’s house as a young man to listen to music as those were the days when owning music records was a luxury very few could afford. He had an extremely keen ear for music, and despite being untrained in any form of it, he could identify any raga within the first ten-fifteen seconds. His only training was the time he spent at his friend’s house.
That was just the beginning of a journey of artistic exuberance.
When Shenoy, as a young bank officer, was required to move to Tenkepet Udupi, he had to leave his home and move into a RCC house, a concrete one. The modern construction, he realised, was too warm for his liking. This nudged him to study how people lived in earlier times. His tours around the coastal town led him to the Heerebettu house, which was four to five hundred years old. He found the house to be cool and comforting even in the peak of summer. This plain mud construction caught his interest, and that was what kickstarted a journey that spanned over four decades.

HASTA SHILPA HERITAGE VILLAGE at Manipal, in the coastal region of India's Karnataka state, is an open air museum and cultural complex which aims to restore and conserve the nation's cultural wealth in the form of traditional buildings and objects of art, craft and other artefacts of aesthetic interest. The brainchild of late Vijayanath Shenoy (1934-2017), a retired banker who converted his own home into an ethnographic museum, Heritage Village is managed by the Hasta Shilpa Trust. Over the last two decades, the Trust has relocated and restored 26 structures of immense architectural merit and fine craftsmanship. It is, indeed, a veritable treasure trove.
Today, Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village draws the attention of serious scholars of art and architecture from all over India and around the world. It is also open to the general public who come to visit the marvel that is Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village – one man’s vision from which our world has benefited.
