Some 1,600 islands, thick with greenery, form a maze of channels in the azure waters off northeastern Vietnam. Although people have lived in the region of Ha Long Bay for thousands of years, most of the islands remain uninhabited. But these coves and natural towers are rich with wildlife. For centuries, this spectacular seascape has inspired wonder.
The name Ha Long, Vietnamese for “descending dragon,” is reflected in a legend: Once, when the Viet people faced invasion, a dragon flew down from heaven to their defense. The creature sprayed not only fire, but also jewels that became the green archipelago.
The scientific explanation for the rock formations, known as karst, is also amazing. For millions of years, seashells and sediments fell to an ancient seafloor, forming solid rock. Tectonic activity raised the resulting limestone above water. Rainfall and rivers dissolved exposed rock, and carved valleys that flooded after the last ice age, creating this rare example of a karst field at sea.
Features include lakes and caves through the islands, and notches and tunnels where seawater has worn at the pillars' foundations. The fantastic landscape also continues into two adjacent national parks, on Cat Ba Island and Bai Tu Long Bay.
You can go kayaking, caving, or even take a ride in a seaplane to experience the grandeur of these enchanting tropical islands.

Ha Long Bay on Dragon's Pearl - Indochina Junk Company
We couldn't believe the CRAZY level of positive reviews for Indochina Junk company without seeing it for ourselves. For those of you looking to cruise Ha Long Bay (Halong Bay), we highly recommend the Dragon's Pearl. It really is that good.
This video shows what you can expect from the 2 day / 1 night cruise package, based on our experience with the same package. We went in early Oct. I left out the room. It was big enough, with a really nice bathroom - for a small boat. Transport both ways from Hanoi was quick and in a modern van with AC and a skilled driver. If you were staying in the same Hanoi hotel before and after your cruise, I would recommend arranging to leave some of your luggage there - rather than drag it all to the boat and back.
We don't normally splurge for items like this and I'm glad we did. I know all of travel is a splurge really. But it really feels like you get exactly your money's worth on The Dragon's Pearl. I wish we had booked the two night. It includes a meal in the cave on the 2nd night.
The crew, ticketing & tour staff as well as our our boatsman were all friendly and constantly helpful. There are actually multiple Dragon's Pearl level junks. A exact copy of our boat toured with us - but with French speaking crew and guests. Neat.

Halong Bay Luxury Cruise | Signature Cruise
This Halong Bay Luxury Cruise was made possible by:
If you’ve never been to Halong Bay, you need to add taking a luxury cruise through Halong Bay to your bucket list! Halong Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for a good reason. It is one of the most beautiful places we have ever seen! It’s filled with giant lime stone karsts that jut out of the water in every direction for miles.
The best way to experience the bay is by a luxury cruise. There are tons of cruise ship operators offering cruises through Halong Bay. The cruises range from cheap backpack boats to five start luxury cruise ships. Since visiting Halong Bay is most likely a once in a lifetime experience, we decided to splurge on a 5 star luxury cruise to ensure that we had the best experience possible!
We booked our cruise with Signature Cruise and we were elated with our experience. Seriously, we don’t have a bad thing to say about Signature Cruises, and that should mean a lot coming from me because when I splurge on an experience I am very critical. Also, the staff treated us like royalty! They made our experience even better.
Our luxurious cruise through Halong Bay started with an amazing lunch served while we were cruising to a floating fishing village. After arriving at the floating village we were rowed around the village in a row boat by one of the women who lived in the floating village. After our row boat ride was completed, we visited a pearl farm to learn how pearls are made. To be completely honest, this sounded kind of lame to me when I read it on the itinerary, but it was actually really interesting!
After leaving the pearl farm, we were taken back to the cruise ship. After an hour or so of relaxing and taking in the beautiful views of Halong Bay, we had a cooking class where we learned to make fresh spring rolls. After the cooking class we enjoyed happy hour with more beautiful views. After happy hour, a delicious five course dinner was served aboard the boat. After dinner I had the opportunity to try my hand at squid fishing. I got really lucky and managed to catch 10!

Halong Bay Dragon Deluxe Cruise Vlog!
We took a two night tour of Halong Bay with the Dragon Deluxe Cruise operated by APT. The first day's activities were quite rushed, and simply felt unnecessary.. All we wanted to do was take in the magnificence of the bay. Kayaking and swimming in Lan Ha bay at our own pace on the second day, and having the time to simply absorb what was around us from the deck of our ship were what we really came for. Without that, we surely would have left feeling that we missed out; the journey to and from Ha Long city and organized activities only give a flavour of what there is to see. And there's a lot to see!

Dragons Pearl, Indochina Junk Review, 3D2N tour @ Halong Bay, Vietnam
This is a basic review of my experience on board the junk Dragons Pearl III with Indochina Junk. Room featured in the video is just the standard double room on the boat.
You cruise through the less traveled Bai Tu Long Bay which is deserted in comparison to the main part of Halong Bay. I would heavily recommend the 3 day 2 night version as you get to enjoy the lovely experience of the dinner in the cave which is great and it is a 4 hour drive from Hanoi each way so you get a lot more time to relax and take it all in.
The food they serve is great and all fresh and local. It is seafood heavy but before you depart they ask you what you prefer and they cater it to all needs(vegetarian or even just chicken based).
We took our trip in May 2014. Looking at their website now it appears they have a large new boat but I would recommend going on their smaller ones which are more traditional junks and feel more cosy.
Mystical Islands Formed By A Dragon | Ha Long Bay, Vietnam
Day 3 and 4; Halong Bay.
7th and 8th March 2016.
We had an unforgettable time exploring the magical Halong Bay. The myth says that a dragon formed these beautiful small islands after crashing and descending into the surrounding waters. The long journey from Hanoi was worth it, from the emerald waters to the strange wildlife - 'where the dragon descends into the sea' (Halong) was beautiful.

Overview of Halong bay, Vietnam (Descending Dragon)
We booked a tour with Dragon King luxury cruise, and I have to say it wasn't worth the money we paid for. Booking group tours is not something we like doing because we feel like we are always being rushed, but I think this is the only way for you to see Ha Long Bay.
Halong Bay is another name for the descending dragon. It took 4 hours from Hanoi to Halong Bay, and it was really touristy. This is something we don't really recommend since it was too touristy for us. If you like crowded island and busy activities then go for it. Sorry, we didn't do much vlogging since the experience we had wasn't the best.
If you have been in Halong Bay, comment down below your experiences.
