THIS ADVENTURE MADE POSSIBLE BY:
Today starts our Galapagos adventure with Royal Galapagos! We were picked up at our hotel in Quito and then flew Avianca to the first beautiful island of Santa Cruz. We boarded our ship, The Natural Paradise, and settled into our lovely room! First we had a delicious lunch, then we sailed to Dragon Hill, did some snorkeling, then went on a hike and saw huge iguanas! It was a fantastic first day!

Santa Ana Hill, Guayaquil, Ecuador, South America
Santa Ana Hill is a tourist attraction located in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The horizon line facing, when viewed from the Guayas River, is punctuated by two hills on its right margin. The Santa Ana and El Carmen Hills are unequivocal icons of visual reference to locate any of the principal sectors of the city. For it was here, on the Santa Ana Hill and its surroundings that the first definite settlement of its citizens began in 1547. Seeking security on the little Green Hill, as it was originally called, was a logical decision, since it afforded complete visibility and ample possibilities for defense. Additionally, the firm ground, compared to the plains below, allowed for more solid and reliable structures that would adhere to the hill like climbing ivy. It was here that the first Main Church and Town hall were built, the traffic of its populace slowly trickling downward to the surrounding areas. The San Carlos and La Planchada fortifications were emplaced directed toward the River in order to face one of the most fearsome enemies of the city, pirates. The glories of pirates battles gradually gave way to commercial triumphs. Cannons and forts remain as memories of times past around the Santa Ana Hill. The ascent to this renovated tourist center begins at the Diego Noboa central staircase that traverses the brilliantly colored facades of the houses. As night falls, the lamplight transports the stroller to the times of beautiful serenades, indispensable arrows launched into the evening by enamored Guayaquileños seeking to target the heart of a beautiful lady. After 456 steps that slowly lead by cafes, restaurants, art galleries and tiny plazas, the most beautiful overview of the city begins to appear.

Meet the endemic species of the Galapagos Islands
Meet the endemic species of the Galapagos Islands, get to know the incredible fauna of the Galapagos Islands
----------------------------------
-Galapagos Iguana: There’s a spot on Santa Cruz Island called Cerro Dragon, or Dragon Hill, that’s aptly named after these nifty-looking reptiles, which come in a striking array of green and gold shades and can grow more than three feet long.
-The Galapagos Sea Lion: These pretty little sea lions are only found on the Galapagos. Like a lot of Galapagos animals, they have an abundance of food and no predators, so they have no fear or reason to flee. Being so playful and inquisitive, these cute animals are often compared to pet dogs!
-The Blue-footed Booby: A marine bird which only lands to breed but is regularly seen on the Galapagos Islands. As the name suggests, these distinctive birds have bright blue feet! With brown wings and a white body and head, the contrast is striking.
-The Red-footed booby: The red-footed booby is a seabird named for its very distinctive bright red feet. As individuals of this species become mature, their feet turn red, a secondary sex characteristic used in courtship behavior to attract mates.
-The Galapagos Penguin: Meet the best dressed bird in the Galapagos! These penguins are the only one of their species to live in a tropical climate, north of the equator. Compared to other penguin subspecies, these are pretty unique.
-The Magnificent Frigate Bird :The Magnificent Frigate Bird definitely lives up to its name – the males especially! Their black feathers have an iridescent purple tint when sparkling in the sun. In the mating season, their red throat pouches puff up to an incredible size, attempting to attract a mate.
-The Galapagos Giant Tortoise: The Galapagos Islands are home to the largest living species of tortoise in the world. They can weigh up to a hefty 417 kg – the largest recorded being nearly 6 feet long! The Galapagos tortoise are best spotted on Santa Cruz but can easily be found on most islands.

Ken Dog Hopping Galapagos Islands 12-07-16
Once again we wake up off the shores to an unspoiled, white sandy beach of the northwestern coast of Santa Cruz Island. Our destination is “Cerro Dragon” or Dragon Hill translated. This is home to the well-known Galapagos Land Iguanas. Since this island is well populated by humans, the iguanas were almost wiped out by feral dogs, cats and rats some 50 years ago. With much foresight, successful programs occurred that used captive and semi-captive breeding projects with some being to other islands. The first encounter on the beach was a Great Blue Heron sitting watching us enter his space. As I traveled the white sandy beach I noticed in-between the lava rocks all the brightly-colored coastal scavengers the “Sally Lightfoot Cabs that come out of hiding between rocks and crevices searching for food. They are the beach’s clean-up patrol. Continuing on the sandy trail with Dragon Hill as the backdrop I was amazed by the giant prickly pear cactus trees as the morning sun glistens off there spikes giving it a sanctified look. The looped trail rewarded us with a couple of Land Iguanas as well as finches, but my biggest surprise was coming across this lagoon with two “Greater Flamingos” working the salty water and at very close range. I also was lucky in the mirrored water to get photos of stilts and a whimbrel. Going back to the boat I got a closer look at Guy Fawkes Islets, but didn’t partake in the deep-water snorkeling. Lunch was interesting as the theme was Ecuadorian foods and displayed a pig on one of the buffet tables and the servers all had Panama Hats (toquilla/paja straw hats) that is made in Ecuador from a palm. They were a little pricy and so I left it alone. Around sunset we came about on Daphne Major an island north of Santa Cruz Island that consists of a tuff crater, devoid of trees and whose rim rises about 394 feet above the sea. A Darwin Finches study took place here by biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant for 20 years that strongly supports Darwin’s theory of evolution. During this sunset cruise we had on the top deck a wine tasting party before dinner. I think the frigate birds thought they were also invited as a flock of them shadowed us throughout the event.
