Drake's Island Plymouth UK - Exploring An Abandoned Haunted Island
Abandoned Island Explored Drakes Island Guerrilla Documentary Plymouth Sound UK
This video is filmed in the spirit of Discovery, exploration and the preservation of our natural history. All respect was shown to the island and we do not promote or condone the destruction of public or private property.
Welcome one and all to the latest GoPro Heroes release! Today we have a very special video for you.. The GoPro Heroes, Spyke & John, travel to and explore an island local to Plymouth known as Drake's Island. Drake's Island was the focal point of defense for three local towns that would eventually become the city of Plymouth, so in a sense, this Island is the heart of our fair ole city.
After finding somewhere to moor up, Spyke and John venture into the Island. In this video you will see the documentation of what they find in the main area, the underground tunnels and the cannon fortifications.
The buildings on the island are centuries old. Surviving the elements through the ages, the island my be in disarray however it's held together quite impressively. Following World War II, Drake's Island remained under the administration of the War Office, which, despite having announced in 1956 that it was no longer needed for defense purposes, did not finally vacate the island until 1963, when Plymouth City Council obtained a lease from the Crown with the aim of establishing a youth adventure training center there. This center was opened in 1964, the year in which a mains water supply finally reached the island.
On 1 May 1987 the island got its first telephone line, using a cable attached to the mains water pipe. The telephone number was Plymouth 63393. The warden had previously used the Ministry of Defense system. Drake's Island Adventure Center, under the custody of the Mayflower Center Trust, operated until 31 March 1989, when the Mayflower Trust surrendered their lease to the Crown and sold off the boats and sports equipment.
In 1995, Drake's Island was put up for sale by the Crown Estate, with an asking price of £235,000, and had numerous offers. In the end, a bidding war commenced between former Plymouth Argyle chairman, Dan McCauley, and a Cheshire-born businessman who wanted to open it to the public.
Dan McCauley's bid was successful and he bought the island for £384,000 in 1995, with plans to turn it into a hotel complex, but he has not, to date, obtained planning permission. In 2003, Plymouth City Council turned down a planning application from McCauley to build a hotel and leisure complex complete with helipad.
As of 2014 the island contains derelict military barracks and buildings from the Napoleonic era, and a MoD radio mast. In May 2005 the island attracted British media attention when one of the empty buildings on the island was squatted by a group of anti-nuclear protesters, The Trident Ploughshares.
Since then the island has been left to rot until earlier in 2017 when McCauley obtained planning permission to build his resort. So we, the GoPro Heroes, took it upon ourselves to journey over and document Drake's Island as it is before McCauley changes it forever.

Drake Circus Plymouth (1971-2004)
A compilation of pictures I found of the old Drake Circus shopping centre in Plymouth before its closure and demolition. Video contains some nice pictures I found from the 1970's and 80's where it was very eye catching, clean and full of life. Then it shows the decline around the early 2000s where the centre started to visibly decay and less and less people shopped there then to its inevitable closure and demolition in 2004. Also includes a short section on the new Drake Circus shopping mall which was completed in 2006.
I do much prefer the old Drake Circus to new modern giant shopping mall. Despite its flaws it did have character and more of a Plymouth feel, the new mall just feels like every other mall. Lifeless and corporate with nothing unique about it plus very loud and overcrowded.

Drakes Island - Chevy's Creative Workshop
Welcome and thanks for viewing Chevy's Creative Workshop
So my Son has been learning about Sir Francis Drake this term and one of the tasks set was to create one of the fortifications in and around the area where he lived and came from. We decided to choose Drakes Island, just off Plymouth, within Plymouth Sound.
I have been sailing past the Island for around 18 years so know it quite well and well worth the time and effort put in.
Using expanding foam really does give you so many options to build any scenery or models.

Snow Day in Plymouth UK 2018
The Beast From The East
Welcome to the first snow day in Plymouth in about a decade! It started while I was at work this morning so I naturally decided to go for a Bike Ride in it on the way home!
Be careful if you're out and about in it, people! The UK is now officially in a Red Weather Warning.
The snow was so awesome! The ride even more so... plus I didn't die, so score! :D
Enjoy the video, everyone! Stay safe!
Here we go with the beginning of Storm Emma!
