history of drakelow
Drakelow Tunnels are a former Top Secret underground military complex beneath Kingsford Country Park north of Kidderminster, Worcestershire. The tunnels were built between 1941-1942 as a Shadow Factory for the Rover car company. Parts for aircraft engines were machined in the 3.5 miles of tunnels throughout WWII. After WWII the tunnels began producing parts for tank engines until 1958 when the tunnels were handed over to the Ministry of Supply, and later Ministry of Works.
In 1961 the British Government converted half of the tunnels into a top secret facility, designated: Regional Seat of Goverment 9 (R.S.G. 9). Drakelow, along with 12 other facilities scattered across the U.K. formed a national network of highly classified Nuclear Bunkers, that the British Goverment would operate the country from, in the event of Nuclear War.
In 1980, Drakelow was re-designated: Regional Government Headquarters 9.2 (R.G.H.Q. 9.2). The tunnels were also upgraded and Blast Doors and Air Locks installed to bring the complex upto full Nuclear Bunker status. Through out the 1980's Drakelow operated under complete secracy until the end of the Cold War in 1990. In 1993, the Ministry of Defence deemed the facility surplus to requirements, and the entire complex was decommissioned and sold.
Since 1993, the Drakelow Tunnels Preservation Trust, have been restoring the entire complex to its original condition to become the largest Cold War Museum in the UK. It also the largest underground space in the UK open to the general public

a little throwback to last years halloween special a little behind the scenes video
Drakelow Bunker ENTIRE WALKTHROUGH 2.5 hour 4k
Drakelow - f 2.5hour production. Nearly every place visited and all main corridors shown. We were inside for 5 hours!
If you cant handle 2.5 hours there is a smaller video of this visit here:
Many thanks to Toby for suggesting this visit.
The Drakelow Tunnels are a former underground military complex beneath the Blakeshall Estate north of Kidderminster, Worcestershire, covering 280,000 sq ft (26,000 m2), with a total length of around 3.5 miles (5.6 km). They were originally built as a Second World War shadow factory, and were developed during the Cold War to be a fall-back government centre.
In mid-April 1941, the Ministry of Aircraft Production informed the Treasury of their intention to build an underground factory of 250,000 sq ft (23,000 m2) in sandstone hills at Drakelow, Wolverley, near the village of Kinver and the town of Kidderminster, for use by one of the engine or gun factories in the Coventry or Birmingham area. The cost of the facility was estimated at £285,000. Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners were contracted to supervise the construction, which began in June 1941 with a provisional completion date of 6 July 1942.[1]
By early July 1942 work was well behind schedule and costs had risen to £983,000. Shortly before that date, the Rover car company was selected as the user of the factory. Rover were at the time manufacturing engines for the Bristol Aeroplane Company.
From the mid-1950s Drakelow Depot, as it had become, was initially used by the Ministry of Supply for storage. Around 1958 the part of the site in the area north of tunnel 4, formerly occupied by the RAF stores area, was developed by the Home Office as a Regional Seat of Government (RSG 9.2). This was designed to cater for a staff of 325,[7] and contained dormitories, storage areas, workshops, electrical equipment, toilets, offices, a BBC studio, a GPO Telephones communications facility and other facilities. It was publicly exposed in a demonstration held there by the West Midlands Committee of 100 in the summer of 1963.
The complex is highly secured and alarmed so don't think of going to tour the inside unless it is part of a sanctioned tour.
much more info here. Apparently cost about £1million in 1942 approx to build. In todays money would cost £16 million, which seems very cheap seeing as a bunker such as RGHQ Chilmark cost a rumoured 90 million to build in 1975 which in todays money would be £465 million!!! Drakelow was a bargain to build. (please feel free to correct my statements)

Drakelow Tunnels movie

In this movie, i wander around the tunnels and explain what i am looking at ( as best as possible ) with some of the history of its development and usage. I also put up an overlay of the place, so that you can see roughly where i am on the tunnels. Its difficult to picture what happened here, as the vast majority of equipment has been removed, especially the world war two stuff. Thanks for watching !!!

Drakelow Tunnels WWII Rover Shadow Factory - A Workers Insight
Mrs Mary Cartwright, 91 from Kinver in South Staffordshire gave us a rare insight into her role as a worker for Rover from 1942 to 1945 in the Drakelow Shadow Factory. She was aged 19 when she started working in the tunnels.
Mary gave us permission to film her and it was simply amazing to listen to what it was like working inside the shadow factory during WWII.
This exclusive video couldn't have been made without her son, David Cartwright, contacting us. It was an amazing day and after the interview, we took Mary and David into the tunnels to visit her old workplace. It was the first time she had been back at the site of the laboratory in 70 years!

Drakelow Tunnels (1980s Bunker1940s Rover Factory) Kinver U.K
The bomb base', as we call this place as kids in the 1990s spending many hours exploring these network of tunnels carved out of the soft sand stone rock of Kinver Edge, as the government were in the process of sale of the place , sadly a lot of the original items are gone and vandalism is still evident, split into two parts the old part and the new part , these tunnels were most likely made from older caves, cave people lived in until around 1940 , the old Rover factory used to test merlin engines big v12 engines used for the war , thanks to the people whom run this open day £10 per person is good value and the tunnels are very clean , I recommend a visit .info can be found on there Facebook page Filmed with a go pro hero 4 black in 1080p wide 24fps with ProTunes off, so i set the main white balance auto and lowered the fps to 24 to allow more light into the lens , enjoy the film , filmed with my mom on saturday morning 27th Feb 2016 on an open day here at Drakelow Kinver U.K. Music credits from the film The Shining
