Drama's Castle (Byzantine Walls) and Church of St. Sophia
The Byzantine Walls of Drama are dated to the 10th century, or earlier. Their perimeter waw about 850 meters.
In 1206, after the destruction of the Bulgarian tsar Ioannitsis (Skylogiannis), reconstructed from the beginning by then governor of the castle, Latino Vonifatio Momferatiko.
They had two gates and at least five towers. Parts of them are kept scattered in the historic city center.
The northern wall, kept in relatively good condition, provide a clear picture of dimensions and of the masonry. In the courtyard of the church of Archangels (SE corner of the walls) are visible traces of one of the two known stairwells.
In a tower on the north side of the walls, which is crumbling today, there was the town clock, which was removed from the tower in 1945.
In the northeastern part of the historical center of Drama dominates the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia.
It is one of the most important monuments of Drama and the oldest surviving building in the city as its construction is dated to the 10th AD century,
The church was originally dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. The next name was Church of God's Wisdom due to refugees from 1922, who named the Temple so. Then prevailed the name Ag. Sophia, as it is known the church till today.
Regarding the changes made in the Temple - an important piece of history-is the conversion into a Muslim place of worship. Specifically, Ag. Sophia was converted into a mosque by the name Bey mosque, the era of Sultan Murat I (1359-1389).
Also, during the First Bulgarian occupation, Bulgarians tried to turn it into museum, an action that prompted a strong reaction of the Metropolitan of Agathangelos.
After the release of Drama from the Bulgarian occupation, the church of Agia Sophia operated again as a Christian place of worship.
Inside the church, which has a square shape, we distinguish massive pillars. Regarding the pictorial works that adorn the interior of the church, it is worth mentioning that this is generally for portable icons. However, of particular interest is the fresco is located in the narthex and depicts scenes from the Second Coming. This mural is located on the eastern side of the vestibule (above the staircase connecting the two levels of the Temple), and dates from 1917.

A tour to the Byzantine Castle in Anamur during our visit to Anamur, Turkey for the ERASMUS+ kick-off meeting on January 2015.
Mamure Castle, the medieval castle, well-preserved, about 7 km (4 mi) south east of Anamur. Originally built by the Romans in the third or fourth century AD, it was enlarged by the Byzantine Empire and the Crusaders. After the Seljuk Turkish Sultan `Ala' ad-Din Kay-Qubad captured the castle in 1221, he had it rebuilt in its present form. It consists of three courtyards with 39 towers, surrounded by a moat. In one courtyard there is an ancient mosque with a minaret – built by Mahmud Bey of Karaman in 1300-1308.

Medieval bridge in Polyanthos
The bridge is located at the exit of Kompsatos, which stems from mountainous Rodopi, crosses Thracian valley and empties into Lake Vistonida.
In the surrounding area have identified several sites with pre-Christian and Christian antiquities with main Byzantine castle of Polyanthos and an aisled basilica between the village of Polianthos and the bridge.
The three-arched bridge was with two piers and two abutments and direction from West to East. Today survives the middle and eastern arc and the eastern abutment.
The middle arc which was slightly raised was the larger. Is open 21.80 m and a height of 12 meters.
The east has an opening of 17 m.
On the two piers there are relievers openings with flat base and arched roof.
It is considered as a work of craftsmen from Epirus and is dated to 17th-18th century.
Fortress and the Byzantine Wall of Komotini
It is the largest and oldest monument of the town.
The city of Komotini was fortified by the Emperor Theodosius I (379-395 AD) because it was considered as a point of strategic importance. The Egnatia Street was passing there and due to military-economic reasons the city was fortified by a wall built with stones.
It had sixteen towers, of which twelve were rectangular and circular on the four corners. The height reached to 9.60 m. It had two main entrances to the SW and SE side, and there were two smaller ones.
Over the centuries and due to the destruction of neighboring villages, thanks to the protection it offered, it became a refuge for the people of the region.
The wall remained intact until 1363. The Turks, during the invasion, destroyed part of the castle and built with its stones of mosques.
The destructive work continued by Bulgarians, who in 1910 demolished towers and a large section of the wall which was left.
Today it remains a neglected monument, remembrance of the glorious past of the city.

European Castle Builders Learn from Byzantines During the Crusades
Where stone and time are available, it is clearly preferable to construct a castle of the stronger and non-combustible material. During the 12th century stone walls and towers become more common in European castles, together with more sophisticated forms of bastion and battlement.
One influence is the Byzantine castle architecture seen by the crusaders on their way east. They soon create in the Holy Land magnificently impressive examples of their own - such as the great Krak des Chevaliers, largely built by the Knights of St John and occupied by them from 1142.
In Europe the castle as a fortified garrison is seen in a highly developed form in the great series built in the late 13th century forEdward I along the coast of Wales, uncompromising in their purpose of keeping the Welsh in submission.

Temenos Didymoticho (Beyazit Mosque)
In the central square of Didymoticho, on the base of the hill, where lies the Byzantine Didymoticho, stands the so-called Bayezid mosque, one of the most majestically Ottoman mosques in Greece.
Founded on the road leading to the main gate of the castle was the center of gravity of the ottoman city that grew out of it.
According to traditions dating back to the era of the Turkish traveler Evliyia Tselebi (16th c.), the construction started by the Sultan Bayezid Yildirim (Thunderbolt), but was not completed because of the problems that the invasion of the Mongols in Asia Minor created at the internal state.
According to the dedicatory inscription above the main entrance, the construction of the mosque commissioned by Sultan Mehmed, son of Bayazid.
The mosque was inaugurated in March 1420.
A second inscription above the side entrance informs us that the reconstruction was undertaken by Kadi of Didymoteicho Seyyid Ali, built by Dogan bin Abdullah and the engineer was Ivaz bin Bayezid. It is therefore property of Mehmet I.
Ancient Theater Maronia
This is the most important ancient Monument of Thrace. Probably constructed during the Hellenistic period and was used until the end of the 6th-7th century.
In the first series were marble thrones, where they were carved inscriptions with names and titles rulers.
In Roman times it was used as an arena for animal fights so there were guardrails on stage.
The theater could seat 2,500 spectators and there were 10 rows of seats, under which was a created a pipeline that sent the waters of the mountain to the sea.
The theater has excellent acoustics: moreover the position is built today still called Bell!
The seats on grandstands overlook the Aegean Sea.
In the summer of 2009 completed the restoration and given the first performances after thousands of years of silence! Restoration works is in progress.
