Jekyll Island entry and Parking Passes
Vehicle entry to Jekyll Island requires a valid parking pass
( Daily Pass $6 – Valid for 24 hours from time of purchase
Weekly Pass $28 – Valid for 7 consecutive days from time of purchase ) which must be purchased at the entry gate or Guest Information Center upon arrival on the island. This pass gives you access to many of the island’s public outdoor areas, including picnic areas, beach parking and access points, playground, soccer complex, historic landmark district, fishing pier, bicycle and nature trails and more. The Parking Fee is charged per vehicle per day. Multi-day and annual passes are available. Bicycles and pedestrians can enter at no charge.

The Jekyll Island dead beach trees
The Jekyll Island beach of dead trees is definitely one of those places that will show up on a Buzzfeed type website listing 25 weirdest places that actually exist. The oak trees that sit in the water are on Driftwood Beach and sit kind of at the end of the island away from most things. I got the impression that most people who vacation there either don't know about it or are more interested in their golf game. This impression was based on the fact that I saw 2 people in the 3 hours I was there walking on the beach. But maybe it was just a slow day. Anyhow this is fine by me because any deserted place like that is a great find!
At first, it’s so bizarre to see the trees on the beach like that. Walking around them was the closest I’ve ever felt to being on another planet. It’s just not something most people see every day, or maybe ever. From a photography perspective, I knew right away that I’d be back in the early morning because the sunrise photos are definitely the way to go here. However, anytime time of day is a great photo time because of how incredible the subject is. Trees in the ocean? Definitely worth an Instagram pic.
So where is it? Jekyll Island sits south of Savannah Georgia about half way to the Florida state line. Its littered with hundred year old mansions looking out over the water. Many of them have been turned into places to stay in when vacationing there but there are a number of normal hotels as well. Jekyll is very rich in history, way more than I care to type here but trust me, it’s something worth googleing.
What happened? Why are they there? Classic case of erosion is my guess. I can only assume that many many years ago, those trees were actually in the woods near the beach. Over time the ocean grabs more and more land. At least in this case, mother nature is creating something awesome as it takes the beach away.
My suggestions- This place is cool anytime of the day but I doubt there's much of a sunset view here. However, the other side of the island has stunning sunset views. If you are planning to take some sweet pics of the trees then I would absolutely get up early in the morning for the sunrise shots. Something about being on a beach when the sun is coming up that has always interested me. Anyway, It is decent terrain for the most part. There’s maybe a tree or 2 to step over or under but you can make your own limits because you don't have to walk for long to see some of the trees. In my opinion that makes this place a good family destination. No hiking boots required, it’s a short walk from the car and even grandma can shuffle herself out there too.
Make sure you plan for at least a day to check out some of the rest of the island. The main resort there is really cool and looks to have an amazing restaurant.
BTW You may have heard of the conspiracy book, The Creature from Jekyll Island. I assure you this place has nothing to do with the Federal Reserve but it looks like an interesting read.
Unfortunately Hurricane Matthew has taken its toll on the beach so many of the trees are no longer upright. It’s a stark reminder how it’s just a matter of time before they're all gone so make sure you plan a Jekyll Island vacation and see this place soon!

Jekyll Island | Driftwood Beach | Georgia | RV Life
As we were driving from South Carolina to Florida last night , we stopped to rest at a truck stop. Maria was very sad we didn't go to Savannah, and so, she stayed up late trying to figure out how to spend some time in Georgia.
She found this unique and beautiful Island right before Cumberland Island... and of course I couldn't say no.
We loved our time in Jekyll Island. It's a romantic, peaceful and active island with a lot of things to do, see and enjoy.
Ever wonder where to go in Georgia besides Atlanta or Savannah? We have the answer here! Hope you fall in love with it, just like we did.
Anoche continuamos el viaje desde Carolina del Sur hacia Florida, y paramos a descansar en una parada de caminones. Maria estaba muy triste por no haber ido a Savannah, y se quedo despierta hasta tarde, intentando buscar cosas que hacer en Georgia.
Ella encontro esta isla unica y preciosa, y por supuesto, no le pude decir que no.
Nos encanto Jekyll Island. Hay tantas cosas que ver, hacer y disfrutar en esta isla tan romantica, tranquila y activa.

Driftwood Beach, Jekyll Island, GA: Road Life More Life
I saw a youtube drone video about Driftwood Beach and started researching it for our Life's A Beach trip in August of 2017. I said to my husband, I HAVE TO GO THERE...Take me there! and a few months later...he did just that! There is no picture, video, or even drone footage in the world that could capture the beauty of seeing this beach first hand! If you can....you must go! High tide and low tide are both completely different. We suggest experiencing them both, once in the evening and once in the morning! We did this by chance and we am so glad that we did!

Jekyll Island, GA: Tracing The History And Best Things To Do
Jekyll Island, a spot off the coast of Georgia, is a place where the history is absolutely fascinating. It was once known as the richest and most inaccessible club in the world. This is where some of America’s most influential and powerful men, including, J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William Vanderbilt, John Rockefeller and other elite lived seasonally on the island. As members of the exclusive Jekyll Island Club, it became a place for an escape and winter retreat with entertainment like hunting, shooting, tennis and biking. Here, these men worked on gas, railroad and steel deals and it’s even where draft legislation was written to create the U.S. Federal Reserve.
Today, you can see 34 of the structures that remain, including cottages that belonged to America’s wealthiest. A Tram tours is one of the best ways to see the area, and includes a look inside Rockefellers' Indian Mound, where I was most captivated by the wrap around porch on the three-story home.
It’s also a place to visit for the beaches because the island has miles of coastline. But the coolest part is that all 5 of the beaches here have their own personality. Anyone you talk to in town will tell you not to leave without visiting Driftwood Beach and one step onto the sand here and I could instantly see why. Here, massive washed up live oaks and pines consumed by the sea line the beach, showing the effects of erosion on the barrier island.
Aside from beaches, sea turtles are one of the most distinguishing factors on the island and the Sea Turtle Center aims to increase awareness of habitat and wildlife conservation for the endangered animal through educational exhibits.
Other spots worth checking out are the Horton House Historic Site. A military aide, William Horton, home built the 18th century plantation. The site also includes the cemetery of the DuBignon Family, which owned Jekyll from 1790 to 1886 and lived in the Horton home until they sold the island to a group of Northern investors.
