Royal Princess 2018 - Ep. 5 Galleon Beach, English Harbour, Antigua - January 22, 2018
January 22, 2018 - Galleon Beach, Freeman's Bay, English Harbour, Antigua
From Nelson's Dockyard, we boarded the water taxi to drop us off on Galleon Beach. It was a great place for sailboats to anchor, and not very crowded in the harbour.
Other than one other couple and a couple of families, we were the only ones on the beach that day. We brought sandwiches with us, and had a little picnic. It was a Monday, and the beach bar was closed.
All in all, a lovely, quiet time for swimming and relaxing.

Antigua top 10 facts Nelson's Dockyard
Just 3 hours from Miami and 8 from London is Antigua, the largest island in the nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
Antigua’s capital is St. John’s, a port town of plantation shutters, iron roofs and colors as bright as our spirit. Mix up a little history and shopping down by the city’s quays, where old shop houses have been given new life as cafes, bars and duty-free boutiques.
Take a break from the noonday sun in the shade of the old Courthouse, now the home of the national museum. Then, spend a lazy afternoon walking the ramparts of the harbor’s fortifications.
Just to the north of St. John’s, you’ll find Runaway Beach and Dickenson Bay, home to some of the purest sands and finest resorts in the West Indies.
On the island’s eastern side, visit the historic sugar plantation, Betty’s Hope. A few miles east, feel the power of nature at Devil’s Bridge, a natural arch carved by Atlantic waves.
Let the breeze carry you further around the Island, to beauty spots like Half Moon Bay and Mamora Bay, then drop anchor for a while at English Harbor.
From English Harbor back to St. John’s, it’s just one perfect beach after another. Some say there are 365 beaches in Antigua, one for each day of the year. But you won’t see them all, don’t even try. Just take it easy, because the slower you move, the better you’ll feel and Antigua is all about feeling good. good travel conditions perfect beaches and weather. Anigua Beach is great resort to watch sunrise and sunset
Dickenson Bay in Antigua, Antigua and Barbuda
Dickenson Bay is located on the northwestern coast in Antigua, close to the Cedar Grove.
While Dickenson Bay is not the most secluded beach in Antigua, its white beaches and tranquil seas attract many visitors. A string of large resort hotels give Dickenson Bay one of the island's largest collections of rooms. The beachfront is lined with restaurants, beach bars, and water sports concessions. Several small uninhabited islands and a one-mile long coral reef can be found off the coast of the bay.
Several big name resorts make their home on Dickenson Bay. That means there's plenty to do, including tours and water sports, but you're not likely to be all alone on this beach.
Positioned near the heart of Dickenson Bay, this beach is on the North West coast of Antigua. You should consider dropping by even if you are not staying in the immediate vicinity. Many of the other beaches in Antigua are known for being hidden gems with potential for deep relaxation. These spots may be perfect for those who need a break from crowds, but other visitors prefer lounging in the livelier environment at Dickenson Bay.
On the northwest coast of Antigua lies Dickenson Bay, with sugary white sand beaches and calm waters for sport and swim. Hotels, restaurants, vendor booths and shops abound. Off the coast of Dickenson Bay visitors will find several small uninhabited islands and a one-mile-long coral reef.
You could always try the restaurant right on the water, if it suits your taste. There are so many unique restaurants in Antigua, but you don't have to eat every meal in a formal setting. Many vacationers simply sit on their towels——not in a restaurant——to enjoy lunch. So, you may wish to consider getting pre-packed lunches from your hotel if they offer them. Or, you could find just what you need from cafes and street vendors en route to the beach.
The concession stand at this spot is also an option. Sometimes, visitors will be able to order some food from one of the local vendors who typically set up shop here.
You will be able to use a public restroom at Dickenson Bay. It's also good to know that you will have access to chairs and umbrellas here, so guests looking for a relaxing spot in the shade will not go leave unhappy. You will find the water here is clear enough for snorkeling, so bring along some gear if you're hoping to find some interesting marine life. Dickenson Bay is a very popular beach, so there's bound to be some crowds. It is also a favorite destination for families with children and there's generally a good mix of both tourists and locals.
Dickenson Bay as well as its available amenities happens to be located inside a major tourist area. If you want to stay away from crowded shores and busy-beaches, it is a smart reason to make plans to visit and beat the crowds, such as having your beach visit first thing in the morning. If you arrive later, you could lose the chance to use all the services that this beach has on site.
What's Nearby
Attractions
This beach is positioned on the North West coast of Antigua. Grand Bay Casino is not very far away, so visitors have the option to walk or to take a cab, and it is one attraction close-by.
Beaches are one type of attraction you can visit, but there's plenty else to see during your stay. The following chart includes some other attractions close-by.
Other Beaches
Of course, Dickenson Bay is just one of many beaches you might like in Antigua.
If the active mood at Dickenson Bay is what you're looking for, consider heading to Soldier Bay West, a beach with a similar ambiance. You'll find it a half mile to the north-northeast. However, if you're looking to enjoy a quieter scene, Galley Bay Beach is a beach which doesn't host as many visitors. It is located a short taxi ride away.
You may also want to consider Runaway Beach, located only a short distance away. Sugary white sand and tranquil waters distinguish Antigua's Runaway Beach. A popular spot for vacationers, the beach is located next door to another popular beach area, Dickinson's Bay. Visitors to Runaway Beach will enjoy its sparkling blue water and fantastic sunsets.
Antigua has some unforgettable natural wonders to explore, and paying a visit to Dickenson Bay is just one way you can spend your afternoon.

10. Frigate Bird Sanctuary
Barbuda's Frigate Bird Sanctuary is a haven for birders. Accessible only by boat, the bird sanctuary lies in Barbuda's northwest lagoon and is home to one of the largest nesting colonies of frigate birds in the Caribbean.
9. Fig Tree Drive
Along Antigua's southern coast, Fig Tree Drive winds through rainforest, farmlands, and fishing villages. This picturesque drive offers a glimpse of local life. Banana trees (called figs by the locals), mango trees, and coconut palms dot the landscape, as well as the ruins of sugar mills.
8. Museum of Antigua and Barbuda
The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda traces the history of these islands from their geological origins to political independence in 1981. Housed in the museum is a full-scale replica of an Arawak dwelling, as well as pottery, weaving, tools, and exhibits on the islands' different ecosystems.
7. Devil's Bridge: Indian Town National Park
Along the rugged northeast coast, the dramatic scenery of Indian Town National Park features the natural limestone Devil's Bridge, sculpted over the centuries by the pounding surf. At high tide, waves force geysers of water through blowholes in the nearby rock.
6. St. John's
St. John's, the capital city and cruise ship port of Antigua and Barbuda, is a kaleidoscope of candy-hued colonial cottages and market stalls piled high with tropical fruits and flowers. Looming above the skyline are the white neo-Baroque towers of St. John's Cathedral, one of the city's most distinctive buildings.
5. Dickenson Bay
In the far north of Antigua, Dickenson Bay is one of the most popular tourist destinations on the island. Fronted by a long stretch of white sand beach lined with resorts and alfresco restaurants, the bay is great for swimming and offers the spectrum of water sports.
4. Nelson's Dockyard National Park
One of Antigua's most popular tourist attractions, Nelson's Dockyard National Park, in English Harbour, is home to Antigua's former 18th-century British Naval Dockyard (inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List in July, 2016) as well as restored historic buildings and some of the island's best nature trails.
3. 17 Mile Beach
Those who stroll Barbuda's 17 Mile Beach, will probably never see a more ravishing stretch of sand, nor another footprint. Lapped by pale aqua seas, this stunning stretch of pink-tinged sand separates the Barbuda lagoon from the Caribbean Sea, and pleases even the most jaded beach connoisseurs.
2. Stingray City
If you have a lifelong fear of stingrays, this fun face-to-face adventure a five-minute speedboat ride off the east coast of Antigua, should banish those fears forever.
1. Half Moon Bay
At the southeastern end of Antigua, tranquil Half Moon Bay is fringed by one of the Caribbean's best beaches. Protected by a reef, this idyllic crescent of fine white sand and azure sea, backed by natural foliage, offers excellent snorkeling on calm days.

Antigua Wahoo Fishing - Double Header by Luxury Locations Magazine Antigua
What is fishing like in Antigua? Can you catch wahoo? Sam Dyson and Nadia Dyson of Luxury Locations Antigua go to find out on Double Header Fishing Charters based out of English Harbour on the south coast of Antigua to try their hand at offshore fishing in Antigua.
Double Header is a 55ft Hattaras fishing boat, we head out to south bank, located between Antigua and Guadaloupe to try to catch som wahoo, mahi and tuna.
From Luxury Locations Magazine Antigua - Whale of a time - Aquatic adventures aboard Double Header
As the sun rises in the early dawn over English Harbour, a lone vessel, a 55ft Hatteras named Double Header, glides out past the many yachts which have overnighted in the harbour. Double Header is bound for the fertile fishing grounds of South Bank, a sea mount located between Antigua and Guadeloupe.
The nearest northern corner of South Bank is 13 miles from English Harbour and though the journey begins with gentle lapping of waters, as the sun rises the activity soon begins merely a few hundred metres from shore.
As the water depth drops by hundreds of feet below us, Captain Derek declares that we are ready to begin fishing. Deckhand Tony, a seasoned fisherman equipped with seemingly impossible balance on the rolling vessel, calmly wanders the deck preparing the rods and lines. Within moments, six lines are out and we are poised for a great day of fishing.
Our fish targets for the day are pelagic fish species including wahoo, mahi mahi and tuna, as well as larger pelagic fish including marlin or swordfish. These species aggregate around the sea mount resulting in rich and more plentiful biodiversity in these locations.
Within 10 minutes, the tip of a rod flicks then springs forward bending to the sea, its reel clicking aggressively as line is stripped from the reel.
From the flybridge Captain Derek shouts down that it is probably a tuna due to the way the bait has been taken. My father, who until a moment earlier was calmly basking in the morning sun in the fighting chair, is now wrestling with the rod as the fight begins.
After 10 minutes of hauling and winding, Captain Derek’s hypothesis is proved correct as Tony lifts a black fin tuna over the transom. Exhausted and happy from the catch, my father relinquishes the chair ready for the next fish.
The morning continues with more tuna and a few mahi mahi over the next hour, when a call from Derek announces that we have humpback whales off our starboard side.
The massive cetaceans, as if on cue, gradually move within 100ft of the vessel, occasionally blowing up clouds of vapour, giving us a clear view of the pod of six or so. Over the next 30 minutes they meander on a similar course until we see tails flap as they dive into the abyss, leaving us to continue our fishing.
As if by way of a parting gift, as we turn away one of the lines is struck. Although we have had a few fish of different species this seems different and a lot more powerful. As I am passed the rod it seems like a monster is attached to the end of the line. As I haul and wind it seems as if I am winning the battle in a similar way to the other fish landed, but this is something different – it is a wahoo.
Fifty feet from the boat the rod is virtually ripped from my hands as the rod is bent double. The line screams from the reel as the wahoo charges away; this, I am told, is why they are called wahoo! After several similar charges over the next 10 minutes, my first wahoo is landed.
Towards mid-afternoon we head back to Antigua. We have had multiple wahoo, mahi mahi, tuna and barracuda on board, seen whales and tails and are happily worn out as we crack open a few well deserved, ice cold beers.
On the dockside Derek presents us with a few pounds of fileted fish destined for the evening’s BBQ.

131 - Must-See on Antigua
In this second of three episodes from Antigua, I’ll take you to some of the must-see places on the Island.
We’re going to Devil’s Bridge, Shirley Heights for the sunset, learning to sail a small sailboat and a few other places.
FACT ABOUT ANTIGUA AND BARBUDA
Antigua & Barbuda is one of the smallest countries in the world, both in population and in size. The population is around 80,000, and it’s 170 square miles – so slightly smaller than Andorra and somewhat bigger than Malta.
The official language is English, and the currency is East Caribbean Dollars, but you can just as easily use US Dollars.
The biggest of the two islands – and the one we’re on is Antigua, 30 miles south of Barbuda. Here is a population of 65,000, and a bit more than half of those living in the capital, St. John. on the northwest coast of the island.
Antigua is 14 miles long and 11 miles wide.
LEARNING TO SAIL
Sailing a small sailboat is not complicated. Well, that was what the instructor told us. We would soon find out just how easy it is.
After the brief introduction to the art of sailing, we got into four small sailboats – four in each with an instructor.
We took turns being the captain of the boat. We had to move from one side to the other whenever we changed direction. And that’s where we should keep our heads down when the boom under the sail moved from one side to the other.
At some point when it was Jamie’s turn of being the captain, he forgot to warn us and the boom came with high speed towards my head. I only just took my head down; otherwise, it would have hit me in the forehead and most likely knocked me out or in the water.
Thank god I survived, because there are so many other adventures ahead here in Antigua.
SHIRLEY HEIGHTS
The highest peak of Antigua used to be called Boggy Park. It rises to a height of 1,319 ft so you can hardly call it a mountain. But they do now.
On August 4, 2009, and Barack Obama’s 48th birthday the Antiguan Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer renamed it to Mount Obama.
In this episode, we’re going to another place with a view: Shirley Heights. It’s a perfect spot for a sunset on the south tip of the island – overlooking The English Harbor.
Every night it draws a crowd for that view. There are a few restaurants and bars serving rum punch and a great steel band, and according to the managing director Valerie, it’s the best steel band in the world. Listen to my chat with her in this episode. Hear how she and her brother transformed this historic place to a tourist attraction.
THE WEATHER IN ANTIGUA
The climate is tropical, and the temperature doesn’t change much over the year.
Sure, most of the Caribbean is warm and sunny, but Antigua holds the distinction of being the sunniest of the Eastern Caribbean Islands. The temperatures average mid-70s in the winter and mid-80s in the summer. That’s 21 Celsius in the winter and 27 in the summer.
ISLAND SAFARI
We went on a so-called safari around the island. Not to see animals but to explore the different sights of the island. Our first stop was very close to where we live, and it’s a must see by the coast called Devil’s Bridge. It's not a man-made bridge but something that is naturally shaped with the crashing waves on the rocky shore.
It’s also a place with a history. In the old days, this is where the slaves went to commit suicide. I speak to our guide, Bernadette about this in the episode.
Our next stop was a place they served some excellent street food in a paper cup. It was a traditional Antiguan Gumbo.
LAND OF 365 BEACHES
The country is nicknamed “Land of 365 Beaches” due to the many beaches surrounding the islands. With “one beach for every day of the year,” it’s also a popular place for weddings. It’s estimated that there are 1200 weddings a year. Many of them on a white sandy beach like the one we ended our Island Safari.
