Interview with Garry Hynes, Artistic Director with Druid Theatre, Galway
I got the opportunity to find out more about the Druid Theatre Company from Garry Hynes yesterday at the media launch of their 2010/11 programme.
More information:
In its 35 years since its inception in 1975, Druid has staged over 130 productions and won numerous awards both at home and abroad including four Tony Awards for The Beauty Queen of Leenane by Martin McDonagh.
The company has toured to every nook and cranny in Ireland and toured extensively overseas making it the premier Irish theatre company in the English-speaking world.
Druids celebrates its 35th birthday this year with a very special event, FROM GALWAY TO BROADWAY AND BACK AGAIN, for two nights only at Galways Town Hall Theatre on May 21st and 22nd.
Directed by Garry Hynes and Mikel Murfi, some of Irelands leading actors, including Marie Mullen, Denis Conway, Cillian Murphy, Derbhle Crotty, Sean McGinley and Eamon Morrissey, will recreate moments from a selection of Druids most memorable productions ranging from The Playboy of the Western World to Bailegangaire and The Beauty Queen of Leenane to The Walworth Farce. Druid also invites the public to cast their vote for their favourite show with the most popular choice forming part of the programme for the evening. Proceeds will go towards Druids Education Outreach initiative (The Silver Tassie) and its ongoing New Writing programme.

This latest treatment of Synge's classic play is the first installment in the Druid Synge series. On a mission to stage all seven works in the playwright's canon by the end of 2005, the company has begun by revisiting one of the texts that helped it to establish its reputation back in the 70s. Almost a century after its controversial premiere, 'PLAYBOY' has lost none of its power as it charts the impact on a tiny rural community of the arrival of a lonely wanderer and his tales of a fearsome deed.
