Exiting Rafting in Mo Chhu River | Punakha | Bhutan
Khansum to Punakha Dzong
Length: 5.6 miles
Gradient: 26 fpm
Difficulty: Class II+
Put-in: Trail to Khansum Yulley Namgyal Chorten
Take-out: Below Punakha Dzong
The Mo Chhu starts high in the Himalayas and has a few runnable sections before meeting the Pho Chhu at the Punakha Dzong. Mo means female and Chhu means water or river, so this is the Female River. This section of river has easy Class I and II rapids combined with beautiful scenery, making it the most rafted section of river in Bhutan.
You begin at a bridge that crosses the Mo Chhu and leads to a trail that goes up to the Khansum Yulley Namgyal Chorten. It’s well worth the 30 minute hike through rice paddies up to the chorten before you paddle down the river. The first couple rapids are the most difficult (easy Class II+) and the remainder is a fairly easy float through a beautiful canyon.
The highlight is rafting by the Punakha Dzong, an old military fortress built in 1637 that is currently used for government offices, monasteries, and is the winter home of the Je Khenpo (the religious leader of Bhutan). Just past the Punakha Dzong the Mo Chhu joins with the Pho Chhu and becomes the Puna Tseng Chhu. You can take out on the right just below the confluence or paddle down further to the town of Punakha.
Generally rafting conjures of images of crashing through horrendous rapids and monstrous waves with laughing and screaming joyful rafters hanging on but in the context of Rafting in Bhutan, it is a gentle drift-down-the-river admiring the scenery and running a few small yet exciting rapids.
The most of the rivers in Bhutan are very steep and highly rushing with limited road access makes it considerably unsuitable for white water rafting. Only a few rivers are opened for rafting considering their safe course and easy access.
The Pho Chu, with its approx 16 km course with about 15 rapids of class 2-4 is the most popular for rafting in Bhutan followed by Mo Chu river with 10 Km course comprising around 10 rapids with 2 - 2+ rapids.
Drifting past imposing 17th century Punakha Dzong (fort cum monastery) watching world’s rarest bird, the white belled Heron in its natural habitat and Kingfishers frolicking on riverbank - all these topped off with spectacular sight of serene lush green alpine valleys, are the most amazing experience you would love to treasure. Rafting in Bhutan is a superb experience in its own right.
No special experience is required as long as you do not mind doing a bit of paddling and getting a bit wet - or quite possibly very wet! - then you will have an exciting time riding the white waters of the Himalayan rivers.
Rivers in Bhutan also offer great potential for Kayaking. If you are looking for more adventure, we will be happy to customize a suitable Kayaking adventure in Bhutan.

PHO CHHU MALE RIVER PUNAKHA - DRUK RAFTING SERVICES 2018
WE KNOW OUR RIVERS MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE - Once we headed back to our hotel from Punakha Dzong, we contacted Druk Services - a professional Rafting Service company and when they came to meet us at our hotel, we happen to hear the first lines said by them. and its true, the rivers once their childhood paly fields now there work place. we had no second thoughts on which company to choose but we defintely had a discussion whether we should go for MALE RIVER or FEMALE RIVER. as we had girls accompanying, we were a bit worried of the strong currents in MALE RIVER and specially it as monsoon in that part of the world. finally we decided to go with the MIGHTY MALE RIVER and next dy morning as promised a WHITE OMINI van came for the pick up and the sliding doors ensured it gave us the best morning views along the way untill we reached the starting point. we were given costumes and then paddles that was like HAMMER to THOR. we can win the war with that one tool. we were given instructions on what and how to use them with keywords. a pilot raft will lead us and we divided into 2 rafts RED & BLUE as we were 10 pax in total plus the rafting staff. we had a wonderful ride that almost was 30-40 mins and even they gave us spots where we could plunge in and feel the underwater strong currents. it was really a memorable day of our trip and if you are in punkaha we recoomend DRUK RAFTING SERVICES. COZ THEY REALLY DO KNOW THEIR RIVERS BETTER OF THE BEST.

Punakha Bhutan - crossing the Mo Chhu river
Crossing the Mo Chhu river near Amankora Punakha. this river being one of mother river of it's counterpart the Pho (father) river also running through the Punakha valley. The delight of such a place brought a child like feeling of innocence to me...as we crossed I found myself lightly humming a tune I had heard at the lodge. The ritual of each guest tying a strand of prayer flags to the bridge expressed just how similar we all are...each of us with a story, each of us with a prayer to be free.
