The Drum Tower of Xi'an in Shaanxi province of China
The Drum Tower of Xi'an (西安鼓楼), located in the heart of Xi'an in Shaanxi province of China, along with the Bell Tower is a symbol of the city. Erected in 1380 during the early Ming Dynasty, it stands towering above the city center and offers incredible view of Xi'an.
The Drum Tower got its name from the huge drum located within the building. In contrast to the Bell Tower, where bell was stricken at dawn, drum was beat at sunset to indicate the end of the day.

Gulou (Chinese: 鼓楼; pinyin: Gǔlóu), or Drum Tower of Beijing, is situated at the northern end of the central axis of the Inner City to the north of Di'anmen Street. Originally built for musical reasons, it was later used to announce the time and is now a tourist attraction.
Bells and drums were musical instruments in ancient China. Later they were used by government and communities to announce the time. The Bell and Drum towers were central to official timekeeping in China in the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
The Bell and Drum Towers continued to function as the official timepiece of Beijing until 1924, when the last emperor of the Qing Dynasty was forced to leave the Forbidden City and western-style clockwork was made the official means of time-keeping.

We really are going to see the Terra Cotta Warriors / Terra Cotta Army but had to spend another day just wandering around the amazing markets and streets of Xian first. We happen upon the famous and ancient Xian Mosque which boast some beautiful stone work. Some of the most incredible food we find are at little stands and hole in the wall places and this is no different...aside from this super cool conveyor belt restaurant! We find some time during our post meal stroll to marvel at how the Drum Tower and the Bell Tower are even more stunning at night when they are all lit up. We stumble upon some really entertaining Chinese TV programs which, even though we have no idea what's going on, are really funny! We've talked about our amazing Alley Youth Hostel in Xian a couple times but we mean it, they are just fantastic! The cheapest and best place we've stayed in China, full stop. We get some dodgy directions for using the bus and wind up getting stranded for a bit but no worries, it just adds to the adventure. After finding our way we are finally on our way to see what we came here for....next week ;-)
