culloden exhibition 3 (LONG).AVI
I recently went to Culloden battlefield (near Inverness) in Scotland. Since last visit they've added an impressive visitors centre, which included this surround video experience. It was better in person, but you get a flavour of it still in this video.
(Normally I put my travel clips on Flickr but this one was too long to fit, so putting it here instead. If you want to see more photos/videos from Culloden they're here:

What a land, oh beautiful Scotland. (On the wee bus back to Oban)
Little bus back to Oban from Dalavich. We meandered through valleys, hills and woods via single-track roads for about 70 minutes. 70 minutes of beautiful Scottish wilderness and landscapes.

A family cruise on Loch Ness, and a three-day trip to the Scottish Highlands
Sponsored by Loch Ness by Jacobite and Visit Scotland, we spent three days in the Scottish Highlands, in and around Inverness. Forget Nessie - there are SO many exciting things for families to do near Loch Ness. Stop off at the romantic Urquhart Castle, with breathtaking views of the Loch. Visit Culloden, a living history museum on the site of the historic battlefield, where so many lost their lives in 1746. Climb up to Castle View in Inverness, and see a Fairy Hill, as well as the river where legend has it that Nessie first appeared. And go to the Highland Wildlife Centre, over in the stunning Cairngorms National Park, to see tigers and polar bears as well as native Scottish breeds, like wildcats, wolves and Eurasian elks. We stayed at the Fiddler's Restaurant and Rooms in the pretty village of Drumnadrochit, and ate at the Heathmount Hotel in Inverness. Wild natural beauty and 1,000 years of history - Urquhart Castle offers a taste of the Highlands at their most dramatic.
Discover 1,000 years of drama, experience a glimpse of medieval life and enjoy stunning views over Loch Ness from the ruins of the greatest castle in the Highlands.
Once one of Scotland’s largest castles, Urquhart saw great conflict during its 500 years as a medieval fortress. Control of the castle passed back and forth between the Scots and English during the Wars of Independence. The power struggles continued, as the Lords of the Isles regularly raided both castle and glen up until the 1500s.
The last of the government troops garrisoned here during the Jacobite Risings blew up the castle when they left. Urquhart’s iconic ruins remain, offering glimpses into medieval times and the lives of its noble residents.
Climb the Grant Tower that watches over the iconic loch, peer into a miserable prison cell, said to have held the legendary Gaelic bard Domhnall Donn, and imagine the splendid banquets staged in the great hall. A more comfortable view of the iconic ruins, against a backdrop of Loch Ness and the hills of the Great Glen, can be enjoyed from the café.
Urquhart’s stories are also told through a remarkable collection of artefacts left by its residents, historic replicas, including a full-sized, working trebuchet siege engine, and a short film.
The castle has a distinctly Highland heritage and the site has witnessed some of the most dramatic chapters in Scottish history. This is where St Columba is said to have worked miracles in the 6th century, where acts of chivalry and defiance provided inspiration during the Wars of Independence and where the MacDonald Lords of the Isles struggled with the Crown for power.
The visitor centre is fully accessible and there is a photographic guide for those who have mobility issues. Disability buggies are available on request.
Opening Times:
Mondays to Sundays throughout June, July and August the castle will be open until 8pm. (last entry is 7.15pm)
Very occasionally the property has to close at short notice due to adverse weather conditions or other reasons out with our control. Please check the Historic Scotland closures page for any unexpected site closures

Winter Road Trip Drive To Spittal Of Glenshee Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland Winter travel video of a road trip drive North on the A93 road, with Scottish music, to visit Spittal of Glenshee, in the highlands of Eastern Perthshire, where the confluence of many small streams flowing south out of the Grampians form the Shee Water. Known as the glen of the fairies it takes its name from the Gaelic shith meaning fairy. The village provides a stopping place on the Cateran Trail waymarked long distance walking footpath which provides a 64 mile circuit in the glens of Perthshire and Angus. The A93 is a major road in Scotland and the highest public road in the United Kingdom. It runs north from Perth through Blairgowrie and Rattray, then through the Grampian Mountains by way of Glenshee, the Cairnwell Pass and Glen Clunie to Braemar in Aberdeenshire.
Culloden Battlefield Mist 30 October 2018
We had a really interesting experience on Culloden Battlefield one morning in October 2018. We arrived with out tour guests first thing in the morning in sunshine. While we were at the Cairn, a mist rolled in at the pace of a man running. The mist moved only up the Jacobite line, along the path which follows the blue flags and the Clan markers. If you’ve visited the battlefield you’ll know the path. All of a sudden the mist changed direction, and began ‘charging’ diagonally across the battlefield in exactly the same direction as the Jacobites had at the time of the battle. We stood there in awe, watching what looked liked hundreds of ghosts literally charging in front of us.
