Save Druridge
This film, created by residents of Northumberland, addresses some of the likely impacts of the proposed Highthorn opencast mine at Druridge Bay.
savedruridge.co.uk
Northumberland’s beautiful Druridge Bay area is about to be destroyed by the largest opencast mine in England
Between 2016 and 2027, Banks Mining plans to extract at least 3 million tonnes of coal from a new opencast mine, called Highthorn, between Widdrington Village and Druridge Bay. The opencast will be operational for at least 7 yrs with possible extensions not out of the question.
The mine will cause massive environmental destruction right next to one of Northumberland’s most beautiful and loved beaches.
Banks Mining says it’s good news for local people, and the environment. We say it’s all about money for Banks, and that local people, and our environment, will pay the price.

Save Druridge
Banks Mining Group propose to dig an open cast mine in the beautiful Druridge Bay area on the North East Coast. Not only will the mine ruin the area, it will destroy the local tourism industry which locals rely on for income.
We all know coal is the dirtiest source of energy, lets keep it locked in the ground, instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. This project has the potential to make a lot of money for a small few, at the expense of many. Please take a minute to help by emailing an official objection using the template and email below.

Dear Sirs,
Re: Highthorn Opencast Planning ref: 15/03410/CCMEIA
Please accept this letter as my objection to the Opencast at Druridge Bay. I object because:-
1. The road already has a lot of traffic especially slow moving traffic and leisure traffic – this is not a dual carriageway its single with few passable areas. More accidents will occur.
2. Tourism will be hit. Druridge attracts people who love nature and are looking for peace and quiet not noise, pollution, light, dust, and lack of wildlife because of it.
3. The Council agreed some years ago they would leave the area from Amble to Cresswell up to the boundary with the A1068 alone. They stated in the LONG TERM MANAGEMENTS AIMS “ Ensure new development and land uses are complementary to the landscape character of the Bay”. They also stated at 3.6.7 “Widdrington and Hauxley villages are less influenced by industrial decline and both offer pleasant gateways to Druridge Bay for the visitor”. If they approve this application they will have gone back on their word. Just because National Planning Policy Framework has to be taken into consideration doesn’t mean that 2000 Core Strategy has to be ignored.
4. Wildlife will be badly affected and dispersed. As the boundary of the site comes right up to the A1068 it is more than possible that animals trying to get around the site are forced onto this road ending in death. If Ferneybeds goes ahead if will be 10x worse for Wildlife in that area.
5. It goes against everything Ministers have been saying about phasing out coal. Amber Rudd in July this year stated “Climate action is about security, plain and simple – economic security. If we don’t act it will become increasingly hard to maintain our prosperity, protect our people and conserve our countryside.”
6. The price of coal has dropped sharply and the increase in Renewables has gone up drastically overtaking coal in the second quarter of this year.
There are many more reasons but these are the main ones. Anyone in tourism will be in tears if this is allowed. Our local Cafes and Caravan Parks will be badly affected.
I hope the Council see sense and throw this application out.
Signed ……………………………………………………….
Please also email Rudd Amber Rudd who is Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change. Tell her we want the current open casts to be the last.

Thank you.

Northumberland Triathlon
Northumberland Triathlon was at Druridge Bay Country Park in Morpeth, in the UK. The race started at 8.00am in the lake at the country park. It consisted of the Sprint and Standard Triathlon - To begin the race was the swim across the lake, then the bike section was a 20Km single or double loop course. The run section of the senior race was a 2 or 4 lap course (sprint or standard) around the lake.
This is the first time I have attended a triathlon event...unfortunately I did not capture the swim at the start of the race.

Places to see in ( Amble - UK )
Places to see in ( Amble - UK )
Amble is a town, civil parish and seaport on the North Sea coast of Northumberland, England. It lies at the mouth of the River Coquet, and the nearby Coquet Island is visible from its beaches and harbour. The civil parish is called Amble by the Sea .
Amble grew in the nineteenth century as collieries were opened; and the newly built railway links to the Northumberland coalfields made the town a centre for the sea transport and export of coal. Prior to the development of the harbour, the town was little more than a hamlet, according to the architectural guides originally compiled by Nikolaus Pevsner. The principal local mineworkings were those at Broomhill and at Radcliffe. The harbour at Amble was the smallest of those that served the coalfields of Northumberland and Durham. It was originally under the control of the Dukes of Northumberland until, in 1837, a port authority – the Warkworth Harbour Commission – was created to supervise improvements.
The Pevsner guide of 1992 says that Today Amble is a not unpleasant small town but has few buildings of distinction. Of those, he records the church of St Cuthbert, which was originally constructed in 1870 and expanded in 1929, and its associated 1876-built vicarage. In addition, he notes some early Victorian terraces on Queen Street and North Street.
Amble is situated on the A1068 that runs along the north-eastern coastline. This road is the old corn trading road which runs from Hexham in south west Northumberland through Cramlington, Bedlington, Guide Post, Ashington and Ellington. The road continues through more open coastal areas towards Amble and continues approximately 6 miles (10 km) to the north to Alnmouth, then winds on to Alnwick. Amble also lies near to the A1, providing easy access to nearest city Newcastle upon Tyne (30 miles (48 km) south), Gateshead (30 miles (48 km) south) and to the Scottish capital Edinburgh (80 miles (130 km) north).
Representations were made in 2006 for Amble to be included in the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which ends at the pier. The town is also adjacent to nature reserves operated by Northumberland Wildlife Trust at Cresswell, Druridge and Hauxley. The town has a caravan park, as well as guest houses and bed and breakfast accommodation for visitors. The Braid, which forms a part of the harbour, is now a greenfield site with a modern marina.
( Amble - UK ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting the city of Amble . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Amble - UK

Top Five Things To Do In And Around Hadston, Northumberland
Close to the quaint shopping town of Morpeth and a mere half hour drive from Newcastle city centre, the town of Hadston is on the doorstep of the beautiful Northumberland hills and the breathtaking coastal spots of Amble and Beadnell.
There are many reasons why Hadston is the place to call home. Here, Nikki Gibson, a sales advisor at our recently opened development, Shoreland Park, gives us her thoughts on the top five things to do in the area.
Explore the vast beauty of Northumberland
Northumberland has some of the most beautiful scenery that the UK has to offer. Wander around the coastal towns of Warkworth and Alnmouth, or hike along centuries-old Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches almost 80 miles coast-to-coast and is a remarkable piece of historic Roman Britain that still survives today.
To be at one with the wildlife, relax in a sailing boat on the lake, or stroll across the picturesque sand dunes, be sure to visit Druridge Bay Country Park, just a 10 minute walk from Hadston.
This area can truly be enjoyed all year round. In the summer, bring a picnic along with you and languish in the sun with sandwiches and fresh juice, or pack a flask of tea and wrap up warm for a brisk walk over the hills in the winter!
Grab a coffee in Morpeth
Morpeth is a historic market town with an array of quirky shops and cosy cafes making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon or a relaxing Sunday. While away the hours with a walk along the banks of the River Wansbeck, or even take to the water in its famous rowing boats. Treat yourself to lunch in one of the town’s restaurants, or snuggle up with a hot drink in one of the many coffee shops nestled away in the streets.
Hop on a train to Newcastle
With its vast selection of bars, restaurants and shops, Newcastle city centre has all you could want for a day in the city, and it’s just a short train ride away when you hop on a train from Morpeth. Shop till you drop with leading brands such as Topshop, Reiss and Northern Goldsmiths, or head for a walk along the iconic Newcastle-Gateshead quayside to appreciate the many bridges. You could unleash your creative side with a visit to The Baltic, or treat yourself to dinner and drinks at a river-side eatery such as Gusto or Pitcher & Piano.
Make friends with the puffins
You can look forward to seeing puffins in their thousands, in their natural habit on Coquet Island, with a short boat ride from Amble harbour. Just under a 10-minute drive from Hadston, this tourist attraction has been running for over 40 years and is not to be missed. It offers the perfect chance to be at one with nature, and alongside the Farne Islands it is one of the few places in the UK where these birds can be spotted.
Alnwick Castle
Who wouldn’t want to experience life on the set of Harry Potter? Stand on the spot where the Hogwarts clan first learnt to ride broomsticks at Alnwick Castle, under a 30 minute drive from Hadston. With regular outdoor films, magical events and fun for all the family, visiting this iconic castle is the perfect way to spend a day.
Life on the farm in Northumberland
Hundreds of people took the opportunity to learn about country life near Morpeth.
They attended an open day at Cockle Park Farm, part of a UK-wide initiative to show the public where their food comes from.
As well as being a working far, Cockle Park is used by Newcastle University’s agricultural department to trial new developments in the industry.
Visitors were able to see everything from arable crops to sheep, pigs and cows.
One of the highlights was milking time for the farm’s 220-strong Holstein-Friesian dairy herd.
The Farm Sunday event was organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), a charity which supports farmers in the dual job of producing food while caring for the environment and working with their local communities.

Cocklawburn Beach Walk, North Northumberland ©
Welcome to Rucksack Rose - The Outdoors Channel. Read more at
This is a short 1.5 mile walk around Cocklawburn Nature reserve and along Cocklawburn Beach near Scremerston on the outskirts of Berwick upon Tweed. The figure of 8 route includes the old lime kiln, a WW2 look out station, a nature reserve and the beautiful sandy beach. It is worth checking the tide times for this walk. At low tide it would be easy to expand the walk further south along the beach towards Cheswick. Parking is straightforward at the end of the road marked at Scremerston for the beach. There are facilities at Pot a Doodle Doo on the Scremerston road or in nearby Berwick. It is a popular place for families and dog walkers who park along the road to the nature reserve. It was one of my favourite short walks when I was living in the borders.
A GPS download of this walk is available from my Viewranger profile:
Wherever you go stay safe, check the weather, plan ahead, let people know where you are going, take maps & compass with your gps and follow the countryside or access codes for where you are.
