The Botanical Garden at the Wilmington Riverfront
It is one of the most soothing, yet little known places in Wilmington: The Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge. This urban oasis is named for the environmentalist and former governor of Delaware who died early this year. This little viddie introduces you to this innovative wetland restoration project by looking at the botanical garden in the refuge. Take one step off the sidewalk and you'll be able to walk among flowers and plants like gray dogwood, cattails, and marsh grasses. There most certainly are several types of insects including dragonflies, bumblebees and crickets, but none are hostile. The gentle babble of the man-made waterfall is an enticing call to stay awhile, although the operating steel mill across the Christina River sometimes screeches like a car wreck long enough to ruin the mood. Regrettably, the garden is such a short stretch it is impossible to feel lost in the wild. But it's a good excuse to return again and again.
History of Nemours
Nemours President and CEO, Dr. David Bailey, talks about the history of Nemours beginning with a transformational gift from philanthropist, Alfred I. duPont.
Back in 1940, when the Alfred I. duPont Institute was an orthopedic hospital, children were patients in the hospital for days, weeks, or even months at a time. We had to attend not only to their medical needs, but to their educational needs and their needs to be children. We had to create an environment where children could be children.
That became woven into our DNA, that idea of getting it right for the family and creating an environment where family feels safe, secure and has peace of mind.
Today, Nemours supports a number of renowned children's health facilities, including the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Delaware; Nemours Children's Clinic with specialty practice locations in the Delaware Valley and North and Central Florida; and primary care offices in Delaware and Pennsylvania. Nemours is currently developing a new children's health campus in Orlando, Florida, including the Nemours Children's Hospital.

In 1923, UD was the first American university to offer a study abroad program. The school from which the university grew was founded in 1743, making it one of the oldest in the nation. However, UD was not chartered as an institution of higher learning until 1833. Delaware River Basin and Conservation Act Passage Announcement - Big Picture
(ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE) Delaware River Basin Conservation Act Press Event at DuPont Environmental Education Center
WILMINGTON, Del. (January 6, 2017, 1:30pm-2:30pm) – On Friday, federal, state and local partners will come together at the DuPont Environmental Education Center on the Wilmington Riverfront to announce the passage of the Delaware River Basin and Conservation Act. The DRBCA was included in the Water Infrastructure Improvements Act for the Nation (WIIN) Act that passed the Senate on Dec. 10, 2016. This is a major accomplishment for local lawmakers and stakeholders who have been working for decades to secure the federal support achieved by other major watersheds, such as the Chesapeake Bay. The DRBCA will establish a coordinated approach for identifying, prioritizing, and implementing restoration and protection activities throughout the basin while supporting on-the-ground projects to protect our water quality, recreation opportunities, and critical wildlife habitat.
Event Details:
The event will begin at 1:30pm with a welcome from Delaware Nature Society’s Executive Director, Brian Winslow, followed by remarks from Wendi Weber, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, Gov.-elect John Carney, DNREC Secretary David Small, and Collin O’Mara, National Wildlife Federation President/Former DNREC Sec.
Background on the Delaware River Watershed:
Spanning 330 miles and four states, the Delaware River Watershed provides more than 15 million people, including the City of Wilmington and much of New Castle County, with clean drinking water. The Watershed also provides critical habitat to hundreds of plant and wildlife species including 200 resident and migrant fish species, contains significant recreational fisheries, and is an important source of eastern oyster, blue crab, and the largest population of the American horseshoe crab. Additionally, the Basin contributes $25 billion annually in economic activity. Through the maritime, agriculture, tourism, hunting, fishing and wildlife industries, it supports 600,000 jobs in our region.
The Delaware Nature Society has focused on water quality and quantity for the past 50 years. The passing of the DRBCA adds additional momentum to our efforts to improve our waterways. We are the State lead for the Coalition of the Delaware River Watershed, which increases our ability to make a difference in protecting and improving Delaware’s water. On behalf of our partners in Clean Water, and our Water Warriors, The Delaware Nature Society extends our sincere thanks to all of Delaware’s decision makers including Congressman and Governor-Elect John Carney, Senator Chris Coons, and Senator Tom Carper for their leadership on this important legislation.
Founded in 1964, Delaware Nature Society works to improve the environment through conservation, advocacy, and education. For more information, visit DelNature.org.

Pediatric Cancer Care - Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders
The Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders helps your child and family throughout the entire cancer journey — from diagnosis to survivorship and beyond. With our long-time membership and leadership in the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), a world-renowned organization exclusively dedicated to pediatric cancer research, we offer the most advanced treatments available in a compassionate, family-centered environment.
Our expert pediatric hematologists and oncologists at the Nemours Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders (or “NCCBD,” for short) work closely with our board-certified specialists representing many medical disciplines from the Delaware Valley (Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, Wilmington, Delaware) and throughout Florida (Nemours Chilcren's Hospital, Orlando, Florida; Nemours Children's Specialty Care, Jacksonville, Florida; Nemours Children's Clinic, Pensacola, Florida) to offer families world-class care.
Nemours is also one of only two National Cancer Institute-designated pediatric Community Oncology Research Programs (or “NCORPs”) in the nation. As an NCORP institute, we work together, across our campuses in the North and South, to give kids with cancer truly comprehensive, well-informed care. For example, many children benefit from our weekly system-wide “tumor board” meetings, when specialists representing various medical disciplines in the Delaware Valley and throughout Florida come together to discuss complex cancer cases. It’s like getting a second opinion from the nation’s best pediatric cancer doctors and scientists without making an appointment.
As an established system of pediatric oncology and hematology care, we pool our expertise and resources across our campuses to give your child the most comprehensive care possible.
Together, our goal is simple: To get your child back to being a kid as soon as possible. At Nemours, we do everything in our power to beat childhood cancer and to bring your family real hope for brighter days to come.
