Duart Castle Isle Of Mull Inner Hebrides Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of Duart Castle, or Caisteal Dhubhairt in Scottish Gaelic, on ancestry visit to the Isle Of Mull, Inner Hebrides. Duart Castle was probably built by Clan MacDougall in the 13th century, and appears to have come into the hands of Clan MacLean in the following century. In 1350 Lachlan Lubanach Maclean of Duart, the 5th Clan Chief, married Mary, daughter of John of Islay, Lord of the Isles and Duart was part of her dowry. In 1647, Duart Castle was attacked and laid siege to by the Argyll government troops of Clan Campbell, but they were defeated and driven off by the Royalist troops of Clan MacLean. In 1691 Duart Castle was surrendered by Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet to Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll. The Campbell clan demolished the castle, and the stones from the walls were scattered. By 1751 the remains of the castle were abandoned. On 11 September 1911, the ruin was bought by Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, the 26th Chief of the Clan MacLean and restored

Charles and Andrew head up to Scotland in order to visit Duart Castle, a 13th century Castle located on the Isle of Mull. The Clan Maclean, one of the oldest clans in the Highlands, received the castle around 1367 when Lachlan Lùbanach Maclean married Mary MacDonald, daughter of the powerful John of Islay. The castle was granted to the couple as a dowry. In 1588, the Spanish Armada had to take a long route back to Spain because of severe storms by sailing around Scotland and Ireland. One ship, most likely the San Juan de Sicilia, anchored at Tobermory Bay, a few miles from Duart. The ship exploded soon after, possible by sabotage. Several of the surviving Spanish were held as prisoners in the dungeons of Duart. During the conflict known as the English Civil War, the Macleans siding with the Royalist cause. Duart Castle was besieged on September of 1653 by six warships sent by Cromwell. On the 13th of that month, a storm hit while the ships were anchored near Duart, and three of them sank, including the HMS Swan. The castle remained with the MacLean Clan until 1691, when Sir John Maclean surrendered it to Archibald Campbell after a long siege and in order to pay off the family’s debt.
It returns into ownership of the Maclean family on September 11, 1911 when Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, purchased the castle and started restoring it. Today, people can visit the castle and enjoy the sites, the history, and even hold various events. In terms of the paranormal, there is a story of a headless horseman. It’s claimed that the man was killed and his head chopped off, and his body thrown into the water. It is now claimed that if a member of the Maclean family is dying, this horseman will appear to collect that person’s soul.

Day 4 Scottish Road Trip: Oban to Tobermory, Mull 21/03/16
Selected video clips and photos of Day 4 of our 2016 Scottish Road Trip. Today we started in Oban, visited McCaig's tower and then got the ferry to Craignure, Mull. We then drove down to Duart Castle and took the single track road to Fionnphort and visit Iona. However we missed the ferry by 5 mins so we turned around and headed for Salen on the coastal road. We stopped at Burg, a National Trust Reserve, and enjoyed a great walk before continuing on to Tobermory for the 1st of 2 nights staying there.
Some great roads, scenery, wildlife and activity. Enjoy!!
