CRAZY DUBROVNIK STORIES | Old City Walking Tour | Sail Croatia Day 3 of 8
Dubrovnik has some crazy history so today we made our way from the port and took a walking tour of the old city. Sail Croatia... ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
A walking tour of Dubrovnik seemed like the best way to learn about the old town, the city history, the walls and castle development and just how the old town came to be. We weren't wrong. Beyond the Game of Thrones fame, Dubrovnik has an incredible past.
History ranging from attacks, bombs, fires and more have shaped the city of Dubrovnik to where it is today. This tour was only an hour long and gave us so much insight into Croatia as a whole, while also providing a great tour of the Dubrovnik town inside the walls as well.
This is day 3 of our Sail Croatia Explorer Cruise and we LOVE IT! We were docked in the Dubrovnik Port, well actually it's Port Gruz, and made our way in to the city for one of the optional excursions provided by Sail Croatia.
Sail Croatia is known for it's Navigator cruise, it's more tailored towards the party vibe and younger crowds. We were so pleased to hear they also offer multiple other cruises and the Explorer cruise was right up our alley! Check out the Sail Croatia Explorer Cruise here:

Join us as we visit Dubrovnik, Croatia in this travel guide covering the best things to do and see in the city. Quite possibly the most visually stunning city we've visited in Croatia, Dubrovnik is sure to leave an impression. Our biggest tip is to spend plenty of time wandering around the Old Town and along the Old Walls.Dubrovnik is the most famous, most visited and most expensive tourist destination on the Adriatic Sea. This romantic city boasts an impressive history and many beautiful historic attractions. An UNESO World Heritage Site, the old town is perfectly preserved, and full of wonderful Renaissance, Gothic, and Baroque palaces, churches, and monasteries. The most popular attraction in Dubrovnik is pedestrian-only old town and surrounding city walls. Since Game of Thrones showcased the city’s beautiful architecture visitors have flocked to Dubrovnik to see “King’s Landing” in real life. One day in Dubrovnik is still enough time to explore the most exciting sights. Here's what you need to know about the best attractions and things to do in Dubrovnik: 1. Pile Gate, 2. Onofrio Fountain, 3. Walk the Stradun street, 4. The Rectors Palace, 5. Explore the City Walls, 6. Have a drink at a Cliff Bar, 7. Old town port, 8. Visit a Banje beach, 9. Lovrijenac Fortress, 10. The Bell Tower, 11. St Blaise's Church, 12. Dubrovnik Cathedral, 13. Sponza Palace, 14. Ploce Gate, 15. Saint Ignatius Church, 16. Jesuits staircase, 17. Gundulic Square, 18. Franciscan Church and Monastery, 19. Dominican Monastery, 20. Take a cable car ride to SRĐ hill.
There is a lot to see but all in a very small area so it’s easy to cover in one day.

5 Top-Rated Day Trips from Dubrovnik | Croatia Day Tours Guide
5 Top-Rated Day Trips from Dubrovnik, Europe
Blessed with a stunning location on the Adriatic Sea, Dubrovnik is surrounded by rewarding day trip destinations. Just offshore, wooded islands punctuate the clear waters, with sleepy villages; calm, pebbly beaches; and time-worn monasteries and churches. Sailing trips are a popular way to explore these beautiful islands. Along the coast, red-roofed villas cascade down hillsides in picturesque towns such as Cavtat, and foodies will love the Peljesac Peninsula, with its patchwork of farms and succulent shellfish and oysters. Be sure to bring your passport; Dubrovnik is just a short drive away from the diminutive country of Montenegro, where you can soak up the hypnotic beauty of its tiny villages and hike amid pine-covered mountain peaks. And for history and culture vultures, Mostar in Bosnia Herzegovina outshines its battle-scarred past with its welcoming locals and picturesque old town on the banks of the Neretva River. Here five day trips from Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Bareboat Sailing from Split to Dubrovnik, in Croatia
Watch how we condense our 2-week bareboat sailing holiday into 7 minutes with full commentary and med-mooring visuals. Have a look at our other YouTube clips on The Sailing Video:
19. Sailing from Dubrovnik to Korcula | Wine tasting in Croatia | Sailing Croatia
This week on Sailing Kawai we start our Croatian journey in Lopud, one of the Elaphiti Islands, a short 6nm sail from Dubrovnik. It has 2 beautiful anchorages and we enjoy some quiet time on this carless Island. After 48hrs on the water we enjoy exploring the land and have a great first impression of the area.
After 2 days in Lopud and some favourable winds we head towards Mljet. The day starts with some easy sailing, 15 knots of breeze and Kawai loves the conditions flying up the coast at between 7-8 knots. Unfortunately the winds change direction and we are forced to tack for a couple of hours in strong winds before we reach Miljet.
Mljet looks beautiful, but with strong 40 knot winds planned for the coming days we head to Korcula for a more protected anchorage and fit in some wine tasting in the wine region of Lombarda. The countryside is green with well manicured vineyards. We spend the day wine tasting at a couple of local wineries and love the experience.
We then sail the channel between Korcula and Orebic, watching the kite surfers and wind surfers enjoy the conditions. It would be our final sail to escape the strong winds. The conditions are perfect, 15 knots of down wind sailing with just the head sail. We then shelter ourselves in Scedro.
About us:
Our names are Jason and Tracey and we traded our house, cars, business, job and security for freedom, adventure, travel and living simply amongst nature and the seas on our 45 foot Hanse 445 sailing boat, Kawai.
We don't know exactly where the winds will take us at this stage but over the next year we hope to sail to Turkey, Greece, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Gibraltar, Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean.
Jase loves making travel videos and we decided to upload to youtube to share our adventure. We really hope you enjoy and feel free to drop us a comment any time to chat or subscribe to follow along :)

Croatia Sailing Trip | Part 2 | Dubrovnik - Time to set sail
Sailing Croatia Islands and visiting its major large cities, Our first stop was in the beautiful old Dubrovnik town (city) walking through its surrounding city walls and its streets, tasting its delicious food and wine & beer.
Dubrovnik is a Croatian city on the Adriatic Sea. It is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea, a seaport and the centre of Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its total population is 42,615 (census 2011). In 1979, the city of Dubrovnik joined the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.
The prosperity of the city was historically based on maritime trade; as the capital of the maritime Republic of Ragusa, it achieved a high level of development, particularly during the 15th and 16th centuries, as it became notable for its wealth and skilled diplomacy.
In 1991, after the break-up of Yugoslavia, Dubrovnik was besieged by Serbian and Montenegrin soldiers of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) for seven months and suffered significant damage from shelling. After repair and restoration works in the 1990s and early 2000s, Dubrovnik re-emerged as one of the top tourist destinations in the Mediterranean.
The names Dubrovnik and Ragusa co-existed for several centuries. Ragusa, recorded in various forms since at least the 10th century, remained the official name of the Republic of Ragusa until 1808, and of the city within the Kingdom of Dalmatia until 1918, while Dubrovnik, first recorded in the late 12th century, was in widespread use by the late 16th or early 17th century.
The name Dubrovnik of the Adriatic city is first recorded in the Charter of Ban Kulin (1189). It is mostly explained as dubron, a Celtic name for water (Gaulish dubron, Irish dobar, Welsh dubr/dwfr, Cornish dofer), akin to the toponyms Douvres, Dover, and Tauber.
The historical name Ragusa is recorded in the Greek form Ῥαούσιν (Rhaousin, Latinized Ragusium) in the 10th century. It was recorded in various forms in the medieval period, Rausia, Lavusa, Labusa, Raugia, Rachusa. Various attempts have been made to etymologize the name. Suggestions include derivation from Greek ῥάξ, ῥαγός grape; from Greek ῥώξ, ῥωγός narrow passage; Greek ῥωγάς ragged (of rocks), ῥαγή (ῥαγάς) fissure; from the name of the Epirote tribe of the Rhogoi, from an unidentified Illyrian substrate. A connection to the name of Sicilian Ragusa has also been proposed. Putanec (1993) gives a review of etymological suggestion, and favours an explanation of the name as pre-Greek (Pelasgian), from a root cognate to Greek ῥαγή fissure, with a suffix -ussa also found in the Greek name of Brač, Elaphousa.
The classical explanation of the name is due to Constantine Porphyrogenitus's De Administrando Imperio (10th century). According to this account, Ragusa (Ῥαούσιν) is the foundation of the refugees from Epidaurum (Ragusa Vecchia), a Greek city situated some 15 km (9 mi) to the south of Ragusa, when that city was destroyed in the Slavic incursions of the 7th century. The name is explained as a corruption of Lausa, the name of the rocky island on which the city was built (connected by Constantine to Greek λᾶας rock, stone).
According to Constantine Porphyrogenitus's De Administrando Imperio (c. 950), Ragusa was founded in the 7th century, named for a rocky island called Lausa, by refugees from Epidaurum (Ragusa Vecchia), a Greek city situated some 15 km to the south, when that city was destroyed in the Slavic incursions.
Excavations in 2007 revealed a Byzantine basilica from the 8th century and parts of the city walls. The size of the old basilica clearly indicates that there was quite a large settlement at the time. There is also evidence for the presence of a settlement in the pre-Christian era.
Antun Ničetić, in his 1996 book Povijest dubrovačke luke (History of the Port of Dubrovnik), expounds the theory that Dubrovnik was established by Greek sailors,[citation needed] as a station halfway between the two Greek settlements of Budva and Korčula, 95 nautical miles (176 km; 109 mi) apart from each other.
