More info about travel to Dubrovnik: Confined within its walls as it has been for centuries, Dubrovnik juts out from the rocky Croatian coastline looking inviting from both the land and the sea. Though the war killed tourism in the 1990s, today the crowds are most decidedly back. And understandably so — Dubrovnik is a living fairy tale that shouldn't be missed.

CRAZY DUBROVNIK STORIES | Old City Walking Tour | Sail Croatia Day 3 of 8
Dubrovnik has some crazy history so today we made our way from the port and took a walking tour of the old city. Sail Croatia... ⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
A walking tour of Dubrovnik seemed like the best way to learn about the old town, the city history, the walls and castle development and just how the old town came to be. We weren't wrong. Beyond the Game of Thrones fame, Dubrovnik has an incredible past.
History ranging from attacks, bombs, fires and more have shaped the city of Dubrovnik to where it is today. This tour was only an hour long and gave us so much insight into Croatia as a whole, while also providing a great tour of the Dubrovnik town inside the walls as well.
This is day 3 of our Sail Croatia Explorer Cruise and we LOVE IT! We were docked in the Dubrovnik Port, well actually it's Port Gruz, and made our way in to the city for one of the optional excursions provided by Sail Croatia.
Sail Croatia is known for it's Navigator cruise, it's more tailored towards the party vibe and younger crowds. We were so pleased to hear they also offer multiple other cruises and the Explorer cruise was right up our alley! Check out the Sail Croatia Explorer Cruise here:

Montenegro Day Trip from Dubrovnik, Croatia
Set off on a day trip from Dubrovnik to Montenegro.
Get out of Dubrovnik for the day and head south to the diminutive country of Montenegro on this guided tour. Get acquainted with Montenegro’s must-see sights, stopping first in the small town of Perast for a brief tour and to take a ferry to gawk at a Baroque-era church plopped improbably in the middle of the Bay of Kotor. Then arrive in the medieval-walled town of Kotor, home to Europe’s southernmost fjord, for a guided tour and some free time. Return to Dubrovnik in the evening.

Dubrovnik:
Dubrovnik is a stunningly intact walled city on the Adriatic Sea coast of the extreme south of Croatia. Although its population barely exceeds 40,000, it's one of the most prominent tourist resorts of the Mediterranean and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.
Dubrovnik is both a seaport and the centre of the Dubrovnik-Neretva County. Its population was 42,615 inhabitants according to census data from 2011. Dubrovnik is nicknamed Pearl of the Adriatic. Tourism is the most important industry in Dubrovnik. The city of Dubrovnik (Latin: Ragusa) was built on maritime trade. In the Middle Ages it became the only city-state in the Adriatic to rival Venice. Supported by its wealth and skilled diplomacy, the city achieved a remarkable level of development during the 15th and 16th centuries. Furthermore, Dubrovnik was one of the centres of the development of the Croatian language and literature, home to many notable poets, playwrights, painters, mathematicians, physicists and other scholars.
Place featured:
Lovrijenac Fort, Dubrovnik:
The people of Dubrovnik built the fort in order to protect the western sea access to the City, particularly from the Venetian fleet. The construction began in 1018 and was completed in the 16th century. The thickness of the walls facing the sea is between 4 and 12 metres. Above the entrance is an inscription in Latin language: NON BENE PRO TOTO LIBERTAS VENDITUR AURO (Freedom is not sold for all the gold of the world). The fort houses a chapel of St. Lawrence, and its courtyard with a cistern serves as a magical venue for theatrical performances. A large number of plays has been performed here within the Dubrovnik Summer Festival programme. Compared with Elsinore, Lovrijenac Fort has become the perfect world famous setting for Shakespeares Hamlet. The fort is opened for visitors.
Pile Gate, Dubrovnik:
The natural starting point to any visit to Dubrovnik, this fabulous city gate was built in 1537. While crossing the drawbridge, imagine that this was once lifted every evening, the gate closed and the key handed to the rector. Notice the statue of St Blaise, the city’s patron saint, set in a niche over the Renaissance arch.
Stradun, Dubrovnik:
Stradun (or officially ‘Placa’) is the main street in Dubrovnik Old Town. It divides the Old town (part of Dubrovnik built within medieval walls) on two, more or less, equal parts – northern and southern. Stradun is stretched from Pile Gate (western entrance to the old town) to the Old Town’s port. It used to be a channel that divided small island on which Dubrovnik was built from the mainland. Later on, the channel was filled to create the main town’s street.

Dubrovnik Historic Town Gate to Gate - ???????? Croatia - 4K Virtual Tour
A late warm summer walk in Dubrovnik, Croatia from the East-Gate to the West-Gate. Click here ▶ to see highlights and guide.
The 'Pearl of the Adriatic', situated on the Dalmatian coast, became an important Mediterranean sea power from the 13th century onwards. Although severely damaged by an earthquake in 1667, Dubrovnik managed to preserve its beautiful Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque churches, monasteries, palaces and fountains. Damaged again in the 1990s by armed conflict, it is now the focus of a major restoration programme coordinated by UNESCO.
Even after these disrupting life events the city recovered to an excellent historic state. Old Town and its many sights (including the well-preserved city walls along which you can walk) is one of the top attractions here. The Old Town is also famous for both of the entrance gates, St. Blaise, or Jesuit Staircase from the Game of Thrones series, seen in this walking video!

Last year, over a million people visited the beautiful Croatian walled city of Dubrovnik. But the UNESCO World Heritage site on the Adriatic coast is becoming a victim of its own success. With thousands of visitors every day, Dubrovnik is suffering a similar fate to other mass tourist destinations throughout Europe. Authorities are now considering options to limit access to the Old City, as this report explains.
A report by our France 2 colleague Ambrine Bdida.

Adventure Dubrovnik - Sea Kayaking Dubrovnik Tour
Thanks to Adventure Dubrovnik for the Sea Kayak tour while we were in Dubrovnik. It was a nice change to get out of the crowded city and onto the water. It took a bit of getting in sync but we finally did ok and were able to paddle somewhat together and not fall too far behind. It's tough to paddle and shoot at the same time!
We opted for the shorter route and more time at the beach cave, which was a good move since it's not easy paddling in the ocean, it's not like a lake with no current. Once we arrived on the beach we had some time to relax, snorkel a bit, watch people jump off the rocks, and had a sandwich.
Soon though it was time to paddle back with the great view of the old town walls, pretty cool. It was a nice tour and very fun, thanks again to Adventure Dubrovnik!

A Guided Tour of Dubrovnik, Croatia
Local guide, Dennis, shepherded the Explore group through a whirlwind tour of old Dubrovnik, just as crowded today as it was yesterday. A mish-mosh of information.
Seven million stones were used to build the fortifications. There are 650 steps on the wall and it costs 70k per person to walk the City Walls. Croatia is Roman Catholic. Buildings were constructed in the 17th century to quarantine infectious diseases called Lazarettos.
Carry a water bottle and refill from big or small Onofrio's Fountains. Free and potable water. Now, listen to Dennis tell you about Dubrovnik...
