Dubrovnik (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Dubrovnik in Croatia.
Within the southernmost archipelago of Dalmatia is one of the most fascinating harbour cities of the young republic of Croatia, Dubrovnik, a breathtaking Mediterranean city with a great history. The city of stone had its heyday in the Middle Ages and was one of the most important economic and cultural centres in the Mediterranean. An ancient courtyard gate leads to the Old Town and to Luža Square, the city’s main square that contains a fine clock tower and splendid palace Loggia. The sixteenth century Sponza Palace consists of a combination of designs, including both Gothic and Renaissance, and once contained the Customs House and Mint. Despite much foreign rule, the city largely succeeded in being autonomous. Velika Gospa Cathedral was built between 1672 and 1713 on the ruins of a Romanesque basilica. According to legend, Richard The Lionheart was shipwrecked in the city on his return from the Third Crusade and his financial donation made it possible to build the city’s first church. From the thirteenth century the city was fortified with powerful walls that now rank among the largest, and also the most beautiful, in the whole of Europe. Dubrovnik is, amazingly, still a storybook city with all the flair of the Middle Ages. A treasure trove of history and undisputed Pearl Of The Adriatic.

Dubrovnik has many natural, historical and cultural gems. Away from the historic old city of Dubrovnik there are many hidden bays and coves worth exploring.
The Bay of Lapad is a popular tourist destination. Lines with hotels, cafes and restaurants the bay is a popular spot for swimmers, thanks to its clear waters and calm seas.
This aerial view of the Bay of Lapad highlights just why this suburb of Dubrovnik, Croatia is such a treasure.
Visiting the Abandoned Hotel Belvedere (Dubrovnik, Croatia)
Just outside of Dubrovnik lies this giant ruin of once 5-star hotel Belvedere. Built in 1985 it flourished during only 6 years. It was damaged in the Croatian War of Independence and then it was used as shelter for Croatian refugees. It's been abandoned since then and has top listings as one of the worlds creepiest abandoned hotels. It's really worth visiting and I will never forget the experience. The hotel has a new owner and there are plans to tear it down and build a new luxury hotel. Maybe this will happen soon? I thought it was important to record as much as possible while it's still there!
For really nice photos and more story about this place you should visit

Ep 16 Exploring Dubrovnik Croatia - White Collar Vagabond
We enjoyed exploring Dubrovnik Croatia with all of its narrow side alleys, beautiful views, and restaurants. The best part is to get lost walking around town and get some exercise on the hundreds upon hundreds of stairs.
The history of Dubrovnik is a fascinating study of the rise of a great maritime power that lived in peace and prosperity for nearly five centuries.
Origins
Dubrovnik was originally called Ragusa and was formed in the 7th century when coastal residents took refuge there under the onslaught of barbarian invasions. Walls were quickly built to protect the new settlement.
Rise
Over the next four centuries Ragusa expanded its influence over the coast and became increasingly prosperous by trading with other Mediterranean cities. In 1205 it fell under the control of Venice but it managed to break away in 1358.
By the 15th century the Republic of Ragusa was a major rival of Venice for control of the Adriatic waterways, trading with the Near East and Europe. It maintained its independence through canny diplomacy and used its wealth to expand its cultural and political influence.
Earthquake
In 1667, Dubrovnik was devastated by a major earthquake which destroyed most of its Renaissance art and architecture. Only the Sponza Palace and the Rector's Palace survived the destruction. The city was reconstructed in the baroque style that you see today.
Fall
After the earthquake, Dubrovnik fell into decline, hastened by the emergence of other European naval powers. It was Napoleon who finally put an end to the republic in 1806 when he entered the city and announced its annexation. In 1815, the Congress of Vienna ceded Dubrovnik to Austria to whom it remained attached until 1918.
Dubrovnik began to develop its tourist industry in the late 19th century. Luminaries such as Lord Byron, George Bernard Shaw and Agatha Christie were awed by the town and Dubrovnik became a major tourist centre in post-war Yugoslavia.
The Bombardment
In December 1991 the world watched in horror as Serbian and Montenegrin gunners trained their artillery on the beautiful, historic city of Dubrovnik. As it was without military value, the only purpose seemed to be to break the morale of the Croatian people by destroying the Adriatic's most historic city. The shelling of 1991 lasted intermittently until June 1992 and caused substantial damage to the roofs, the marble streets and the Renaissance sculpture. Fortunately UNESCO and other international organizations rushed to the rescue. Teams of skilled workers laboured throughout most of the 1990s and now the treasures of Dubrovnik are beautifully restored.Read more about the 1991 bombing of Dubrovnik.

The first of a few videos from Dubrovnik. The figure of 114 killed by the shelling in the early '90s comes from a Red Cross figure quoted on Wikipedia. I have seen other numbers, and cannot vouch for the accuracy of this number. Some figures are for slightly different period lengths, some are for civilians only, and others include military personnel. None differs enormously, however.
