Colorno, Italy - Reggia di Colorno and some more
I was driving from Milan to Ancona and stoped in this beautifull place to lunch and took the opportunity to do some sightseeing around the town without any map. Was a pity because only after the journey saw that I must return someday to make a proper visit. The stoppage time for the stay was only 2 houres.

Pilotta Palace, Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy, Europe
The Palazzo della Pilotta, also called simply the Pilotta, is a vast complex of buildings located in the historic center of Parma, located between Piazzale della Pace and Lungoparma. The name comes from the game of pelota, practiced by the Spanish soldiers in the courtyard of Guazzatoio, originally said precisely of pelota. Built around 1580, during the last years of the Duchy of Ottavio Farnese, the building is built around the rider, a long arm straight on pillars, which linked the Rocchetta Visconti (of which you can see some traces along the Lungoparma), to Palazzo Ducale, then just a collection of houses inhabited temporarily by the court, which was located in the empty square of Peace. The ducal palace was partially destroyed, along with the theater Reinach and parts of Pilotta, by bombing in May 1944 and later demolished after the war. Only artist documented in the works is the Tuscan Giovanni Boscoli, but it is likely that the project is the military architect Francesco Paciotto, a close friend of the Duke, who called him back to Parma own in 1580. The yard, which was given to Simone Moschino, was built and designed by Ranuccio Farnese in 1602 but stopped in 1611, leaving him in a state of incompleteness where it still stands. The façade that was to be built facing the current Piazza Gravel was never built and the church of San Pietro Martire, belonging to the Dominicans who was wedged in the first of the courtyards, was never knocked down if not in recent times. The set of buildings spread so in three courtyards, respectively called St. Peter Martyr (today said Pilotta) of Guazzatoio (originally called pelota) and said that the racket. Pilotta had to find a place in such a gigantic Salon (soon turned into the Teatro Farnese, a large stable, the homes of the grooms, the stables, the stable of mules, the coach house, the wardrobe, the Hall of the Academy and a series of tunnels to delimit large courtyards. Luigi Marchesi, View of the courtyard of Guazzatoio (1846). Pitti Palace, Gallery of Modern Art. This set of buildings was to include all the services side by side from the true residence, that is, the Palazzo Ducale. With the end of the Farnese family also ends the pageantry of this magnificent building, looted since the advent of Charles I who moved around the heritage Farnese in Naples. Only with Philip I of Bourbon is a partial revival of the building, which continue to this day. In the second half dell'Ottocendo the area of the former church of St. Peter Martyr was built Reinach Theatre, opened in 1871. In 1939 changed its name to Teatro Paganini and was almost completely destroyed, along with parts of the palace of the Pilotta, by bombing plane of May 1944, and then demolished. Even the old Ducal Palace was badly damaged and later demolished. Between 1986 and 2001, after a long and controversial design phase, was completed the redevelopment of Piazzale della Pace designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta, inserting the large garden and fountain that follows the perimeter of the former church St. Peter.

An avenue through the park and four 18th century statues by J.B. Boudard lead to the ducal residence. Created by Vignola in 16th century for Ottavio Farnese, it was later transformed and enlarged by Ennemond Petitot in the 18th century by adding four corner pavillions.
The palace, which nowadays houses the Carabinieri offices, is frescoed in the Mannerist style with 18th century stucco-works. A monumental staircase leads to the Sala degli uccelli or Bird Room, named after the stucco decoration by Benigno Bossi representing 224 birds of different species against the blue barrel-vaulted ceiling.
The Sala di Alcina contains the oldest fresco in the palace, a cycle dating back to 1568 based on book VII of Orlando Furioso. The Sala del Bacio or Room of Kiss was probably frescoed by Bertoja after 1570, drawing inspiration from Orlando innamorato by Boiardo. There is also a smaller Sala di Erminia and a Sala dell'Amore, which was almost certainly designed by Agostino Carracci in 1601, even though he only executed the scenes depicting the allegories of Love.

The Palazzo della Pilotta is a complex of edifices located between Piazzale della Pace and the Lungoparma in the historical centre of Parma, region of Emilia Romagna, Italy. Its name derives from the game of pelota played at one time by Spanish soldiers stationed in Parma.
Built around 1583, during the last years of reign of Duke Ottavio Farnese, it developed around the corridor (Corridore) which connected the keep (Rocchetta, traces of which can be seen next the river Parma) to the Ducal Palace: the latter, begun in 1622 under Duke Ranuccio I, was never completed. the façade on the Piazza della Ghiaia is missing and the annexed Dominican church of St. Peter was demolished only in recent times.
The existing complex includes three courts: the Cortile di San Pietro Martire (now best known as Cortile della Pilotta), Cortile del Guazzatoio (originally della pelota) and the Cortile della Racchetta. The Pilotta was to house a large hall, later turned into the Teatro Farnese, the stables and the grooms' residences, the Academy Hall and other rooms.
After the end of the Farnese family rule of Parma, much of the movable assets of the palace were removed by then Duke Charles I, later King of Spain, and taken to Naples in the 1730s. The Biblioteca Palatina was established here by 1769. Elizabeth Farnese, Queen of Spain, was born here in 1692.
By 2015, the building spaces had been taken up by a number of cultural institutions and museums, including in addition to the library:
National Archaeological Museum
Liceo artistico statale Paolo Toschi (it), an art school named after Paolo Toschi
Museo Bodoniano (it), a museum dedicated to Giambattista Bodoni

Parma - Dimore D'Epoca in Emilia Romagna

Buona visione!

The Parco Ducale , also known simply as the garden , is a historical park in Parma of 208,700 m², located in the Oltretorrente district near the Parma stream. In 1561, the Duke Ottavio Farnese had the idea of creating a park in the Oltretorrente area, around the new villa that he had built in the area then occupied by the fourteenth-century castle of Ghiara built by Bernabò Visconti ; for this reason he bought the surrounding land and demolished various buildings, keeping only the Renaissance Palazzetto Eucherio Sanvitale .
After the Restoration , the new duchess Maria Luigia commissioned the court architect Nicola Bettoli to partially restore the park, introducing new tree species, including monumental plane trees planted in about 1830 in the so-called Piazza dei Platani in the center of the great étoile placed in front of the building.
With the extinction of the Farnese family in 1731 , the park fell into a state of decline, which was accentuated during the war of Austrian succession , when in 1745 all the ancient trees, even those placed on the islet in the center of the fish pond, came cut and burned to feed the troops of Prince Lobkowicz's troops . Francesco Garbarini, chamber director of finance commissioned by Vienna to preserve the ducal garden, tried in vain to block the massacre by offering the entire state-owned forest of the Cornocchio.
The park develops on a trapezoidal plan with the main axis placed perpendicular to the Parma stream; the Palazzo del Giardino, however, is in a decentralized position, even if this lack of symmetry was resolved by the Petitot with the creation, right in front of the building, of the large piazza ad étoile, today surrounded by tall plane trees ( Platanus hybrida ) to the intervention of the architect Nicola Bettoli; from it there are seven avenues, of which you are flanked by horse chestnuts .
The large central boulevard divides the park in two, leading directly to the large fish pond. Other avenues, which reach a total of 3.2 km in length, run through the garden, surrounded by a perimeter boulevard of about 1.8 km. The large central avenue crosses some perpendicular roads, which go into the side woods.
After passing the circular avenue that surrounds the étoile, there is a first opening at the intersection with the first orthogonal path; along its development symmetrically open to the central boulevard two small rectangular clearings, at the center of which are placed two large vases decorated with shells. At the intersection with the perimeter avenue, the path forms another two small rectangular planes; near the one to the south rises the Palazzetto Eucherio Sanvitale, while in front of the intersection opens the children's play area, a short distance from the Serra degli Aranci.

In 1873, the town of Parma was struck by a cholera epidemic. Therefore, the psychiatric hospital was moved to Colorno, a neighboring village. The rooms and halls of the former ducal palace and San Domenico convent were rearranged for the occasion.
The patients’ conditions were critical. Just like a ghetto, every unwanted and troublesome person in the society was locked up inside those walls and abused: restraint beds, straightjackets, confinement cells, electroshocks, jailer-nurses, sadistic relationships between doctors and patients. Not a treatment center but a real nightmare! Some people were born in the institution and lived there all their lives thinking it was normal.
At the asylum, patients were taught that crazy people weren’t people but things, and just like things they needed to be washed, dressed, tied and punished. The asylum was a concentration camp.
Things improved in the sixties when a group of medical students occupied the building to claim the patients’ right to equality, reporting discrimination, absurd hierarchies, and patients being forbidden to have any type of contact with relatives outside the institution.
On December 31st 1996, the Colorno asylum was closed permanently.
Nowadays, after myths and urban legends, it seems like nothing ever ended. People tell of cries and noises coming from the former asylum, of ghosts and unidentifiable beings that still inhabit the building.
We enter the former mental institution with Hanna, a 20-year-old girl from Ukraine. We’ve come here with her because she deeply believes, and fears, all that lies beyond life.
Hanna: “I’ve been fascinated by the psyche, its mechanisms and emotional states ever since I was little. I’ve always believed that there is something else living with us concrete and manifest humans.
We manage to get inside the asylum through a small hole in the wall. The atmosphere is disturbing. There are wheelchairs and beds everywhere. There are patient’s files all over the floor, piles of clothing, strange instruments, medicines and tableware, and dust is everywhere”.
Hanna is scared to death, you can see it in her eyes, but she gets ready for the photoshoot with great courage. She undresses and wears a pair of panties and a torn T-shirt, defenseless and uncomfortable just like the people who were “buried alive” here.
Hanna wanders around the asylum to understand and feel what really happened in this place. And to face her darkest fears. We follow her, capturing every single moment and all of her emotions.
Hanna:“People say that what we cannot touch or see, things we cannot know or discover makes man fear, and I’m scared of spirits… those supernatural beings that are commonly pictured as an almost colorless stain, transparent and light floating around in abandoned houses and dark places”.
The Colorno asylum is ramshackle but… it feels like it’s still alive, and we soon confirm this. We start hearing thuds and weird noises, all of which are inexplicable. Hanna jumps and starts at every small noise. She cries, she’s paralyzed.
Hanna: “When my grandfather died, weird paranormal episodes started happening. I was very little but I’ll never forget the sense of foreboding in my house, the noises, the strong smell of hospital and… echoing steps in the night. I knew it was my grandfather but I was terrified anyway. I could sense some negative energy, a certain close warmth every time I went to bed, just as if he was sitting right beside me”.

The Royal Garden in Venice Italy
This is a small urban garden, located between Piazza San Marco and the San Marco-Giardinetti Vaporetto stop. It's a nice place to take a quick break, to sit and review your route or guidebook before setting out on your walk around Venice, to picnic or to wait for the next vaporetto at the end of the day. The garden was once part of the palace belonging to Eugene Beauharnais (who was Napoleon's stepson, served on his military staff, and was actually his Viceroy in Italy), and he laid out the plan for the garden himself. Earlier in history, the site was used as a gondola marina, for municipal food storage, and even held POW's captured in 14 century war.
