Willis-Knighton Health System
The Future of Healthcare Is Here
In 1924 a new hospital was created west of downtown Shreveport to serve one of the city’s newest suburban areas. That hospital, Tri-State Sanitarium, was the forerunner of what has become North Louisiana’s largest healthcare organization, Willis-Knighton Health System.
Today, the flagship of Willis-Knighton Health System remains at the original location, but the system’s arms reach out to residents throughout Shreveport and Bossier as well as in nearby parishes. Willis-Knighton South, the first satellite hospital in the state, serves southwest Shreveport. Across the Red River, WK Bossier Health Center is located in northern Bossier City. And WK Pierremont Health Center serves southeast Shreveport and south Bossier City.
WK Progressive Care Center, on the campus of Willis-Knighton Medical Center, provides skilled nursing care. WK Extended Care Center, also at Willis-Knighton Medical Center, provides subacute care.
The health system provides cooperative support for neighboring hospitals. Affiliated facilities include North Caddo Medical Center in Vivian, DeSoto Regional Health System in Mansfield, Minden Medical Center in Minden and Springhill Medical Center in Springhill. Each is an autonomous hospital or health system that takes advantage of the benefits of tertiary services and purchasing contracts offered by Willis-Knighton. The system also includes a rural health and wellness facility, WK Claiborne Regional Health Center. The Health System also enjoys a unique affiliation with Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center – Shreveport, a university teaching hospital with three professional schools.
In 2007 Live Oak Retirement Community merged with Willis-Knighton. After 25 years as a multifaith retirement community, that nonprofit corporation joined Willis-Knighton to take advantage of new opportunities for meeting the needs of seniors in our community. Willis-Knighton’s overall retirement initiative is The Oaks of Louisiana, with Live Oak as an integral part. Live Oak includes independent living apartments and a health center with skilled nursing.
Willis-Knighton Health System is the only locally-owned, locally-operated health system in the Shreveport-Bossier metropolitan area. Recognized at the turn of this century as the state’s fastest-growing health system, Willis-Knighton has consistently demonstrated its commitment to the health and well-being of the communities it serves. It is the largest nongovernment employer in the area and is among the most philanthropic organizations in the region through its “tithe the bottom line” philosophy which gives back to the community.
The health system has numerous accolades and distinctions to its credit, including recognition as one of Solucient’s Top 100 Hospitals in America (2005) and Top 100 Hospitals in America – Cardiovascular (2005, 2006), receipt of the Consumer Choice Award presented by National Research Corporation for numerous years and recognition in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hospitals” editions in 2007 and 2008.

Marching the Ducks out of the Lobby - The Peabody Hotel, Memphis, TN
At 5 pm each day, the Duckmaster at The Peabody Hotel marches the ducks out of the lobby fountain to the waiting elevator returning them to their rooftop palace for the night. The ducks were adorable but the beds and the service at The Peabody was AMAZING. This was taken during our trip to Memphis, TN over spring break - LOVED Memphis - every bit of it from Beale Street to Graceland.
