East Tennessee Urbex--Ducktown School(Part 1)
Note: I'd like to take this time out to give a special thanks to Ducktown mayor Doug Collins for allowing us to have this rare opportunity to explore this magnificent building. Mayor Collins is a good man. He gave us a tour of the school building and told the entire history of it to us, as well as him recounting his memories from when he went to school there. That alone made this experience even more powerful.
Ducktown Elementary School was originally built as Kimsey Junior College in 1933. Due to the isolation of the Copper Basin Mining District from the rest of the populated areas in Tennessee, the college never opened to the public and was left empty for 5 years. In 1938, the school finally opened as the Copper Basin School and acted as a facility that catered to all, from kindergarten to the twelve grade. Around 1956, the new Ducktown High School was built. The high school students were transferred into the new building while the elementary school remained in the old Kimsey Junior College site. Sometime around 2006, the new Ducktown Elementary School was built. The school has been abandoned ever since. It was briefly used by emergency service personnel for a few years. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
The school has been abandoned now for 8 years and currently, there are no plans to re-open it to the public due to a lack of funding. Mayor Collins says that the estimate for the repairs to bring the building up to code is projected at around $8 million.

Copper Basin
During the last week of June 2014, I traveled with a mission team from Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church of Baxley, Georgia, to work in a region of the country that I have visited many times. Where the states of Georgia, Tennessee, and North Carolina meet, there is an area known as the Copper Basin. It is a place of beauty. It is a place of hospitality. It is a place of poverty. This short documentary tells the story of two ministers, two missionaries, and a church that wanted to help.

Closing of the copper mines in the Copper Basin - 30 year anniversary
July 31, 1987 marked the beginning of the end of the mining industry in the Great Copper Basin of southeast Tennessee as the last ore was extracted from area mines. Ore from South America was brought in to produce sulfuric acid and make other products, but that also ceased in the early 2000's. This video was created to honor our mining heritage and to those who worked there. Music by Midnight Oil - Forgotten Years. Pictures are from multiple FB picture preservation groups, Ducktown Basin Museum, Topics News Publication, Cline Photos, and other internet sources. I do not claim ownership to any of the pictures or music in this tribute.

1955 Copperhill Tennessee environmental damage
A brief glimpse of severe environmental damage to the area surrounding Copperhill, Tennessee in 1955. Heavy sulfuric acid emissions from a copper smelter killed all vegatation for miles around the smelter. Breathing in the vicinity of the small mining town became very difficult when the winds were calm. The area has now mostly recovered from the damage and vegetation has returned to these foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.
