Dudley By Drone - A film by DEK Images
I’m not from Dudley, but I’ve called the borough home for 12 years. In my years here I’ve discovered some amazing architecture, fantastic canal networks and fascinating nature reserves in a town steeped with history.
It home to a Castle, the Black Country museum (the home of Peeky Blinders) and epicentre of the glass industry.
It has been the victim of some very narrow minded, very public criticism recently which I found completely unfair.
I own an aerial photography business so decided to take my drone to the sky of Dudley and show this place in its true beauty.
In this film you will follow the Castle from sunrise, the centre of recent criticism, the DY Eye (I know it’s gone for now but had to be included), St Marks church, Pensnett, St Andrews church, Netherton, The bumble hole nature reserve, the water front at dusk and finishing at the Saltwells nature reserve and Netherton ‘Razza’ at sunset.
I couldn’t get every beauty spot in so had to pick a few. If you want to see more then come and visit this great Borough.

Dudley Castle
Dudley Castle is a ruined fortification in the town of Dudley, West Midlands, England. Originally a wooden motte and bailey castle built soon after the Norman Conquest, it was rebuilt as a stone fortification during the twelfth century but subsequently demolished on the orders of King Henry II. Rebuilding of the castle took place from the second half of the thirteenth century and culminated in the construction of a range of buildings within the fortifications by John Dudley. The fortifications were sleighted by order of Parliament during the English Civil War and the residential buildings destroyed by fire in 1750. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century the site was used for fêtes and pageants. Today Dudley Zoo is located in its grounds.
The location, Castle Hill, is an outcrop of Wenlock Group limestone that was extensively quarried during the Industrial Revolution, and which now along with Wren's Nest Hill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument as the best surviving remains of the limestone industry in Dudley. It is also a Grade I listed building. The Dudley Tunnel runs beneath Castle Hill, but not the castle itself.

Dudley Tunnel - Canal Trip
This long tunnel occasionally breaks out into basins. Originally these were all underground, but the miners took out so much limestone that they almost reached the surface and it became unsafe. This tunnel also serviced a coal mine. (N.B. Although very dark in places, this film is available in 4K definition.)
Dudley Tunnel Part 2 of 2
Basins and Mines. Arriving in Castlemill Basin the boat is turned round then enters a new tunnel leading into the old limestone mines under Dudley Castle and Zoo. Here we visit Little Tess mine where we have an audio-visual display about the history of the mines followed by a visit to the vast Singing Cavern before re-entering the main tunnel. The trip continues with the boat reversing out of the main tunnel back into Castle Mill Basin before passing through a short tunnel through an ancient coral reef into Shirts Mill Basin. Finally we pass through the oldest section of the tunnel, Lord Ward's Tunnel built in 1777 before asrriving at the Black Country Museum.
