Dudley Castle
Dudley Castle is a ruined fortification in the town of Dudley, West Midlands, England. Originally a wooden motte and bailey castle built soon after the Norman Conquest, it was rebuilt as a stone fortification during the twelfth century but subsequently demolished on the orders of King Henry II. Rebuilding of the castle took place from the second half of the thirteenth century and culminated in the construction of a range of buildings within the fortifications by John Dudley. The fortifications were sleighted by order of Parliament during the English Civil War and the residential buildings destroyed by fire in 1750. In the nineteenth and early twentieth century the site was used for fêtes and pageants. Today Dudley Zoo is located in its grounds.
The location, Castle Hill, is an outcrop of Wenlock Group limestone that was extensively quarried during the Industrial Revolution, and which now along with Wren's Nest Hill is a Scheduled Ancient Monument as the best surviving remains of the limestone industry in Dudley. It is also a Grade I listed building. The Dudley Tunnel runs beneath Castle Hill, but not the castle itself.

Dudley Zoological Gardens 2019
Dudley Zoological Gardens in the West Midlands is the perfect place for photographing animals. We visited in January, so it was exceptionally cold. From Lions & Tigers to Snakes & Spiders there’s fun for all ages at Dudley Zoological Gardens. Over 1,000 animals many exotic & endangered on a 40 acre site. Come face to face with Lemurs as they roam freely in their woodland home. Walk through an indoor Rainforest to see primates, otters & meerkats. Watch amazing Brids of Prey as they demonstrate their flying skills around the Castle grounds. Make some new furry friends down on the farm. Travel back in time in our History Discovery Zone and learn about Ghosts and the Horrible History of Dudley Castle.

Dudley Zoo 2018
Dudley Zoological Gardens is a fantastic day out and fun for all the family. Set in 40-acre zoo located within the grounds of Dudley Castle in the town of Dudley, in the Black Country region of the West Midlands and comes with its very own castle.
Dudley Zoo, September 2019
For the final day of my mini trip to the Midlands I travel to Dudley Zoo, around a mile and a half walk from Dudley Port Station.
Dudley Zoological Gardens are located on a 40 acre site within the grounds of Dudley Castle and opened in 1937 with several enclosures designed by Berthold Lubetkin and the Tecton Group, and now are listed buildings.
In this video of my visit to the zoo, we begin by exploring the site, encountering all the different residents in their themed enclosures as we make our way around, finishing off back at the entrance where we take the vintage chairlift back up to the top of the site, and take a look around the castle itself.
Thank you for watching my video from Dudley Zoo, with so much new content still to come in 2019 don't forget to subscribe!!

Dudley Zoological Gardens and Castle: Black Country, West Midlands, England
The 40 acres of zoological gardens, which opened to the public in 1937, is set within the grounds of Dudley Castle, in Dudley, the Black Country, West Midlands, England. It’s not the biggest zoo we’ve visited by any means but the Lemur Wood (where you’re free to roam amongst the animals) is spectacular (as featured in this video); a personal experience which makes the whole visit worthwhile.
