Eastern Port Phillip Bay
I flew over the Submarine J7 used at as breakwater at The Sandringham Yacht Club since 1930, also the multi coloured Brighton Bathing Boxes you may be familiar with and Luna Park at St Kilda which opened December 1912 to pass Monday morning before my flight home.
Launched in 1917 and acquired by the RAN in 1919, the fastest submarine in the world found herself decommissioned by her 5th birthday and sitting on the bottom of Port Phillip Bay by 1926 as a breakwater at Sandringham like her mothership whilst berthed at Geelong, HMVS Cerberus (HMAS Platypus).
Although approximately 1,860 bathing boxes, boatsheds and similar structures are located around Port Phillip Bay and Western Port, the 82 Brighton bathing boxes are the only remaining structures of their kind close to the Melbourne central business district. As a functional remnant of a bygone era, they provide a cultural and historical resource that is constantly being photographed, painted or drawn. The highest price paid thus far was $285000 in 2016.
HMVS Cerberus was the most powerful ship on station in Australia in 1870 and in 1871her guns could not be fired close to shore following a raft of public protests concerning general damage suffered to windows from the percussive effects of her main armament. After WW1, she became a submarine depot ship and was renamed HMAS Platypus yet by 1924, this 100000 pound ship had been sold for 409 pounds as scrap and found herself sunk at Black Rock by the local council as a breakwater where we find her still to this day.
