China's Incredible 2000 Year Old Irrigation System // This is China
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System is the world's oldest non-dam irrigation system that's still in use. It was built around 256 BC, over 2000 years ago. The system has survived earthquakes, wars, and time. To this day, it helps to make Sichuan province the most agriculturally productive province in China. In this video, I breakdown how the Dujiangyan Irrigation system works.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System
The headworks of the Dujiangyan Irrigation System is located in the city of Dujiangyan. The irrigation system was built in 256 BC. In over 2,200 years, it played a huge supportive role to local economic and social development and left rich water culture heritage to later generations. It is a monument in the history of the development of water conservancy projects in China. The irrigation system provides abundant water supply to the Chengdu Plain. Its canals have the benefits of irrigation, flood prevention and control, and water transport. It contributes to the creation of the prosperous scene of the Land of Abundance on the Chengdu Plain where “water is under control and man does not know what famine is”. Because of the irrigation system, the Chengdu Plain has become the granary of western China and the political, cultural, and economic center of southwestern China since the 2nd century.

On the edge of Chengdu, in China's Sichuan province, a ceremony at a historic site honors a genius whose engineering legacy remains after more than two thousand years. The place’s name, Dujiangyan, meaning dam on the capital city’s river is a modest title for an undertaking of incredible scope. The great rivers of China helped the civilization flourish, but also brought devastation during years of severe flooding. In the third century B.C., Li Bing, serving the ruling Qin state, devised this system of weir works—levees, partial dams, and waterways—to regulate the flow of the Min River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze. Upriver from the Chengdu Plain rise the high Longmenshan—Dragon’s Gate Mountains. In springtime, meltwater pours down. By diverting part of the Min at Dujiangyan, Li Bing's system prevented floods and provided consistent irrigation for farming. On the eve of China's Qingming Festival, a day to celebrate ancestors, Dujiangyan hosts the Water Releasing Festival with traditional costumes and events honoring Li Bing, whose historical impact is as clear as the azure water of the Min River.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System, Sichuan - China Travel Channel
The Dujiangyan Irrigation System was built 2300 years ago by order of the provincial governor Li Bing. It is located about 60 km northwest of Chengdu. Here, the Minjiang, an important tributary of the Jangtse was divided in the middle by a dam and a flat dyke, the so-called fish mouth. The water of the inner Minjiang flows on the level of Chengdu and irrigates today 600.000 hectare of land in the complete Sichuan basin. At inundation the water is conducted over a spillway into the outer Minjiang. A 261 m long suspension bridge allow people to cross the raging flood of the Minjiang River safely at high water. Today's Anlan Bridge, also known as Couple Bridge, was originally built from wood and rattan. Later, steel cables were used since the bridge swayed too much.
Today, the original Dujiangyan dam system can only be only seen as a replica; it was replaced by a concrete dam. The complex includes the beautiful Erwang Temple, dedicated to the builder and his son. Since 2000 he whole area is protected as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In 2006, it was supplemented by the Zipingpu dam. In 2008, a major earthquake occurred here. More than 85,000 people were killed and nearly 6 million people were left homeless.

Mount Qingcheng and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System (UNESCO/NHK)
Construction of the Dujiangyan irrigation system began in the 3rd century B.C. This system still controls the waters of the Minjiang River and distributes it to the fertile farmland of the Chengdu plains. Mount Qingcheng was the birthplace of Taoism, which is celebrated in a series of ancient temples.
