On the edge of Chengdu, in China's Sichuan province, a ceremony at a historic site honors a genius whose engineering legacy remains after more than two thousand years. The place’s name, Dujiangyan, meaning dam on the capital city’s river is a modest title for an undertaking of incredible scope. The great rivers of China helped the civilization flourish, but also brought devastation during years of severe flooding. In the third century B.C., Li Bing, serving the ruling Qin state, devised this system of weir works—levees, partial dams, and waterways—to regulate the flow of the Min River, the largest tributary of the Yangtze. Upriver from the Chengdu Plain rise the high Longmenshan—Dragon’s Gate Mountains. In springtime, meltwater pours down. By diverting part of the Min at Dujiangyan, Li Bing's system prevented floods and provided consistent irrigation for farming. On the eve of China's Qingming Festival, a day to celebrate ancestors, Dujiangyan hosts the Water Releasing Festival with traditional costumes and events honoring Li Bing, whose historical impact is as clear as the azure water of the Min River.

Sichuan Vlog: Dujiangyan Irrigation Ancient Town & Marathon!
** Please expand the description box for itinerary & music details**
April 18, 2015
Our initial plan was to take an early morning bus from Chengdu South Bus Station to Dujiangyan so that we could volunteer at the Dujiangyan Panda Base. However, bus tickets were sold out so we opted to take a taxi from Chengdu to Dujianyan, which took just over an hour. The taxi ride cost us RMB 300 (rather pricey, but we were out of time and options!). Once at Dujiangyan, we came to the sinking realization that the city was hosting a marathon and the road we needed to take to get to the Panda Base was closed!
Lost in translation, we were told that the Panda Base was a 20 minute walk away from where our taxi dropped us off. It wasn't. It was more like a 20 minute drive away. Nevertheless we took a walk in the rain and spotted the runners and supporters cheering on the athletes as they ran and we walked ... in the rain.
After reaching a Panda Valley, where a panda research center is located, we were sad to find out that it was not the one we were meant to visit. We then decided to walk back to the city and go to one of the city's famous sites, the Dujiangyan Irrigation System and ancient town.
We walked to the bus station only to find that the road for the bus was closed due to the marathon. We then walked further into town, took a motorized rickshaw (RMB 6 RMB total) for a few kilometers and then continued to walk through the town until we finally caught a taxi.
Once at the Irrigation Town we purchased our tickets (90 RMB per person) and had a pleasant walk through the lush, green park, explored the ins and outs of the irrigation system with its man-made canals. We walked through the quiet shopping streets of the ancient town and found a cute little restaurant selling dumplings and spicy beef noodles for just 6 RMB per bowl!
We then re-entered the Dujiangyan Irrigation Sysem and scenic area via the main entrance and spent another two hours walking the paths through the beautiful forests and across the mountain. When we were ready to leave, we caught a trolley (10 RMB per person) to take us back to the exit gate.
All in all it wasn't quite the day we envisioned, but it was still a pleasant day of adventure, exploration and time together as husband and wife! The visit to the Dujianyan Irrigation System was much more interesting and picturesque than we initially imagined and we think that this would be a perfect day trip if you ever find yourself in Chengdu.
As always, thank you for watching our vlog, sharing in our adventures and exploring the world with us!!
Happy travels!!

青城山,都江堰2019之行 旅游攻略 Mt. Qingcheng and Dujiangyan irrigation system in Sichuan, China (English sub)
Mt. Qingcheng and Dujiangyan irrigation system are two tourist spots you must visit. The scenery is gorgeous here but they also have strong cultural values. Mt. Qingcheng is one of the most famous Taoist mountains in China. Dujiangyuan is an ancient water irrigation project. We are going with a tour group, so we will not be able to see everything. I highly recommend going to these two places by yourself!
China Chengdu WenShu Monastery
Wenshu Monastery // Chengdu, China's Most Popular Attraction
The Wenshu Monastery in Chengdu, Sichuan, China is one of the best preserved monasteries in the province. It's free to enter, and offers relaxing gardens, social gazebos, and many places to worship. There are 80 monks that live in the monastery. My favourite part of the visit was watching the monks unwind with games of badminton and table tennis.
The area surrounding Wenshu temple is great for souvenir shopping and trying some of the local street food. Guokui is a must-not-miss snack that involves a pita-like bread stuffed with beef and chili oil. You can also get a bowl of sweet water noodles, which combines the 5 flavours on a generous helping of thickly cut noodles.

Special Report: Strong quake jolts SW China
Reconstruction of the damaged road to the quake's epicenter, Wenchuan, had progressed to the county border by Thursday noon. Communications cables connecting Wenchuan with other parts of the country were repaired on Thursday afternoon.
The highway linking Beichuan County with Mianyang City was re-opened on Thursday morning, allowing heavy rescue machinery to enter Beichuan. The Sichuan relief center said more than 60,000 injured people had been rescued in quake-damaged areas in the Province as of Thursday morning.
In hard-hit Beichuan County, more than 200 injured were rescued on Wednesday. Relief efforts were slow due to the rugged mountains and heavily damaged roads. Rescuers reached the county Wednesday night. Another strong aftershock jolted Yingxiu Town in Wenchuan County again.
Rocks rolled down from the hills and some heavily damaged houses, still standing after Monday's devastating earthquake, collapsed completely. At least 270 students were confirmed dead by Thursday morning at a middle school in Qingchuan County.
A three-storey dormitory collapsed on about 400 students who were taking an afternoon nap when the earthquake struck. The school has over 850 students. Only 139 students escaped from the dormitory. Rescuers are still searching for those missing.
So far, the death toll in Mianzhu City has risen to 4000. Three towns in the county are still out of reach. Meanwhile, in downtown Mianzhu, thousands of residents spend their nights outdoors, desperately in need of tents, food and water.

We climbed Mount Qingcheng when we were in China, and it was genuinely the hardest and most physically draining experience ever!
Hope you enjoy watching it more than I did climbing it! :)

Quick tour of China
This is a mix of still pictures and video of a recent trip I went on hosted by Air China and the Chengdu Overseas tourist co. Starting in Chengdu we went to Jiuzhai, home of the largest grasslands in Sichuan and some local tibetan nomad villages, on to the Langmu Temple and the yellow river before heading back to Chengdu via Wolong Panda breeding sanctuary and the Dujiangyan Irrigation System

Sichuan Vlog: Sunrise Emei & Leshan Buddha!

April 12, 2015

After a chilly night's sleep at the Golden Summit Hotel on the top of Emei Shan we got out of bed at 6:00 am to catch the 6:45 am sunrise.
We dressed warmly (Glo wore six layers on top!) and headed to the summit, which was a short 10-15 minute walk away. The summit has a Buddhist temple and a massive shrine that overlooks the valley below. The platform wasn't too crowded when we arrived, but you should get there early to stake out a spot right at the railing. As it was an overcast morning, the sunrise wasn't as spectacular as we hoped for. Nevertheless, it was much clearer than the previous day, and we were happy to have seen peaks of brilliant orange, yellow, and pink rays of sun shining through the clouds! After sunrise, we walked around for about 30 more minutes, taking in the serenity of the mountain views, valleys, clouds and trees.
Getting from Golden Summit to Baguo Si (Baguo Village) took about 3 hours and started with a 55 RMB per person cable car ride from the summit to Leidongping. There, we returned Glo's rented jacket in exchange for the 170 RMB deposit. We used our bus roundtrip tickets from the previous day to ride from Leidongping to Baguo Si for free, which took about 1.5 hours. At Baguo Village, we had lunch then paid 25 RMB per person for the hour-long one-way ride to Leshan. If you take a taxi, you could probably make it from Baguo Si to Leshan in 40-45 minutes. Our van just happened to make an extra stop that required a short detour.
At Leshan, there are actually two separate parks that are right next door to each other, the Oriental Buddha Capital and Leshan Giant Budda Park. It cost 170 RMB per person for admissions into both. Both parks are large and consist of nice paved paths meandering through beautiful forests. We spent three hours exploring both parks but kind of rushed through the Giant Buddha Park because we were tired and trying to get back to Chengdu before dark. We probably could have easily spent 4-5 hours there if we had more time. The parks are lovely but a bit overpriced in our opinion.
We caught a bus back to Chengdu from right outside the Giant Buddha Park. It was very convenient and cost just 50 RMB per person and took just under 1.5 hours!
