Prince William visits the Hendon Police College
Prince William presented awards to the top trainees at a ceremony Hendon Police College where he also reviewed the 216 new recruits, who were graduating after 25 weeks of instruction before joining the ranks of officers across the capital.
Hundreds of family and friends cheered and clapped as the trainees marched around the parade square in their uniforms, hats and white gloves.
The band of The Prince's regiment, the Blues and Royals -- provided the music for the hour-long parade.
Motorcyclists, dogs and their handlers and members of the mounted branch, as well as a helicopter fly-past, added to the atmosphere of the occasion.

Mount Warband Napoleonic Line Battle 48TH NORTHAMPTONSHIRE 12/22/12
he regiment was first raised in 1741 as James Cholmondeley's Regiment of Foot in Norwich, England during the War of Austrian Succession. The regiment first saw action at the Battles of Falkirk and Culloden in 1745-1746, campaigning against the Young Pretender. In 1748, it was renumbered as the 48th Regiment of Foot. The 48th took part in the French and Indian War and they received their first battle honour in the Americas at the Battle of Louisburg, although the Regiment did not receive their due honour for this until 1882. The 48th was part of General James Wolfe's capture of Quebec in 1759.
The 48th was present at the capture Martinique and Havana in the West Indies before returning to serve in Ireland in 1763. In 1773, the 48th was stationed in the West Indies prior to the start of the American Revolution. They were later captured by the French during the war.
Suffering from loss of men in battle, captivity and disease, the 48th was repatriated back to England in 1780. The Regiment was relocated to Northampton District and then became known as the Northamptonshire Regiment.
It too was part of the Great Siege of Gibraltar from 1779-1783, and was awarded the Castle and Key emblem.
In Napleonic Wars
The regiment then fought as part of the Duke of Wellington's army for the duration of the Peninsular War against Napoleonic France. The regiments most famous battle honour was gained in at the Battle of Talavera in 1809. The regiment also participated in the battles of Douro (1809), Albuhera (1811), Badajoz (1812), Salamanca (1812), Vittoria (1813), Pyrenees (1813), Nivelle (1813), Orthes (1814), Toulouse (1814). At the Battle of Albuera it lost its Colonel, George Henry Duckworth, son of Admiral Duckworth.

2 Mercian, Queen's Royal Hussars and Grenadier Guards march in Worcester
The Mercian Regiment and the Queen's Royal Hussars recently returned from Afghanistan and here they march through Worcester in a homecoming parade. It was also a Freedom March for 2 Mercian and the Grenadier Guards - both were granted the Freedom of Worcester in 1993.

John Julius Norwich (1929-2018) was an English popular historian, travel writer and television personality. He is the author of histories of Norman Sicily, the Republic of Venice, the Byzantine Empire and 'The Popes: A History'. [Listener: Christopher Sykes]
TRANSCRIPT: We ended up in Waterloo, of course, and about six months before that – I'd never been to Waterloo – about, no, I think more like two or three months before we were actually going to go and do the shooting, I was... at that time I was a Liberal member of the House of Lords and I was on a... I used to go to meetings of things like the Council of Europe and Western European Union and things like that in Strasbourg or Luxembourg or Brussels or somewhere. I did that several times and we were in Brussels and doing a thing about military strategy, about which I knew absolutely nothing. I knew I couldn't make any useful contribution at all, so I took the afternoon off, together with three other delegates; we were paired, two, well, they were one Labour and one Conservative and two… two Labours, one Conservative and me who was a Liberal, and we drove off to Waterloo. And it was a blazing hot summer day and we had a delicious lunch in Waterloo, and all around Waterloo, you get the very, very, very clear impression that Napoleon won, because there were pictures of Napoleon everywhere, hundreds of postcards, he's on all the plates, he's on all the glasses, he's everywhere. You never, never, never see a picture of the Duke of Wellington at all. And one got a very, very clear impression, you know, that Wellington really hardly mattered. I did actually find one postcard of him saying that he'd distinguished himself in India, but not mentioning Waterloo. And I remember, I think we must have got rather drunk, because the Belgians were terrible drivers in those days because it was the only country in Europe that didn't demand driving licences or if it did, I mean, you could get them at 15 or something like that. And they were all... it was a hot summer evening and they were all driving back, probably most of them plastered, and they were... I mean, I've never been so frightened by so many cars, and I remember leaning out of the window and shaking my fist and shouting, 'We won!' on the way home.
And then what else... what other films did we make? We made several in Venice about, I was by this time very much involved in keeping Venice or trying to save Venice from all the problems it has, and we made, I think, three films there, one about it and one about the measures which were being taken to preserve it, and then we did another one 10 years later seeing to what extent those measures had worked.
