HMS Forward receive Freedom of Wolverhampton in civic ceremony
The West Midlands' only Royal Naval Reserve Unit has received the Freedom of the City of Wolverhampton.
HMS Forward was granted the Freedom of Entry to the City of Wolverhampton at a special ceremony on Saturday.
HMS Forward, based in Birmingham, regularly visits and supports military events across the city – and is often seen in parades at Armed Forces Day and Remembrance celebrations. In addition, the Commanding Officer and Staff Officer accommodate invitations from the Mayor of Wolverhampton’s office to provide a senior Naval Officer for all military events, as well as supporting the Royal British Legion with its annual Poppy Appeal in the city centre.

I was in the Welsh guards during the conflict and this is the first time I've made the return in 30 years and it's been a big step for me actually to come here and do this, but now that I'm here it feels like some sort of weight has been taken off my shoulders at the moment and it's a good process to go through.

STORYLINE
Britain's Prince Edward has joined veterans for a remembrance service on the Falkland Islands for soldiers who died during the 1982 conflict with Argentina.
Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, arrived on the islands on Thursday and laid a wreath during the ceremony in San Carlos Bay, on the northwest of the islands on Friday.
Arriving by helicopter, he braved storm force winds and sleet to join veterans at the service at the site which is best known as the landing point for British forces during the 1982 fighting.
The ceremony was to pay homage to the British soldiers who died during the 74 day conflict sparked by an Argentine invasion on the British ruled south Atlantic archipelago.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of the conflict in which 649 Argentine troops; 255 British soldiers and three islanders died.
Prince Edward, is on a five day visit to the British overseas territory as part of a year of events being held to mark the Diamond Jubilee, the 60th anniversary of his cousin, Queen Elizabeth's accession to the throne.
The Falkland Islands governor, Nigel Haywood and visiting British Member of Parliament Mark Lancaster also attended.
For some of the veterans who made the 8,000 mile (12.875 kilometres) trip from the UK it was a poignant moment.
Its been a big step for me actually to come here and do this, but now that I'm here it feels like some sort of weight has been taken off my shoulders, said Steve Jones, a veteran of the Welsh Guards, who's making his first trip back to the island since the war 30 years before.
During his visit to the Falklands, Prince Edward will undertake a number of official functions including the opening of an environmental research institute and participating in a remembrance Sunday service to be held in Port Stanley.
About the size of Northern Ireland or the US state of Connecticut, the Falkland Islands remains one of the world's most remote inhabited places.
Rising tensions over the British overseas territory escalated again earlier this year as the Argentine government of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner called on the UK to open dialogue about sovereignty of the contested islands.
In recent months the islands' government announced a referendum on the territory's political status, which will be held in early 2013.

Duke of Gloucester Cup - Own the Night
Australian Army infantry soldiers from across Australia are testing their core skills for the prestigious Duke of Gloucester Cup at the School of Infantry, near Singleton in NSW, from 6-11 August 2017.
The Duke of Gloucester Cup is the Army’s premier military skills competition, pitting the best Royal Australian Corps of Infantry rifle sections from each unit against one another through a series of challenging activities that test their core infantry skills, including marksmanship, tactics, teamwork and fitness.
Along with the Duke of Gloucester Cup, five other trophies are awarded: Sir Arthur MacDonald Trophy for best foundation war-fighting skills; Gurkha Trophy for best live-fire shooting; Royal Ulster Rifles Trophy for best falling plate shooting; OSCMAR Trophy for best battle endurance; and the DSM Roche CSC Memorial Cup for best individual soldier.
The Duke of Gloucester Cup was created by Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in 1946, while serving as the Governor-General of Australia.

AFTER A SUCCESSFUL INVESTIGATION BACK IN APRIL WE GO BACK IN THE HOPES OF RECREATING THE ACTIVITY FROM OUR FIRST NIGHT.
SOME ACTIVITY DOES OCCUR SUCH AS K2 ACTIVITY, EVP`S, COLD SPOTS, FOOTSTEPS AND SHADOW FIGURES WITNESSED BY MEMBERS.
Wolverhampton's first public library had been established in 1869 after the passing of the Public Libraries Act and was situated in the Old Athenaeum in Queen Street.
The library became very popular and in 1872 the Town Council moved it to larger premises in Garrick Street. By 1896 over 1,000 people a day were using the library.
The Diamond Jubilee Fund
Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee of 1897 led to the building of a new free library. A committee was set up to raise money for the building. The Diamond Jubilee Fund, as it became known, eventually raised £9,000.
A competition was held for the design of the new library. The conditions for the building included a cost limitation of £10,000 with some form of reference to the Diamond Jubilee included in the design. The winner of the competition was Henry Hare.
Demolition of the theatre
The Council decided to build the new library on the site of what was previously the Old Theatre Royal on the corner of Garrick Street and Cleveland Road, land that had been purchased in 1897. The theatre was demolished and the building materials sold; the money raised from this sale was added to the Jubilee Fund.
Royal visit
The foundation stone was laid on 23rd July 1900 by HRH Duke of York, (later King George V) to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The building was officially opened in 1902.

The Central Library is built of red brick with yellow terra cotta facades.
Famous names
The windows on the Garrick Street side of the building have panels above them bearing the names of Chaucer, Dryden, Pope, Shelley, Byron and Spencer.
The windows facing Cleveland Road bear the names of Shakespeare and Milton. In 1936, due to increased use of the library by the public an extension to the building was added.
The Central Library today consists of a Public Lending Library, Children's Library, Reference Library and a Learning Centre.

The bronze water sculpture, entitled ‘Alchemilla’, will be unveiled by HRH The Duke of Kent, the Club’s President, on the opening day of The Championships.

Duke of Kent visits Crayford and Hall Place & Gardens
On Tuesday 23 July 2019 His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent KG visit the borough, as part of our Alcock and Brown centenary celebrations. In June 1919 Alcock and Brown made the first-ever non-stop trans-Atlantic flight in a Vickers Vimy originally designed and built in the Vickers Factory, at Crayford. The Duke’s visit coincided with the 100-year anniversary of Alcock and Brown’s visit to Crayford on 23 July 1919. They returned to celebrate their achievement at the re-opening of The Princesses Theatre by the then Duke of York, who later became King George VI. During his visit the Duke officially unveiled a magnificent new Alcock and Brown sculpture bench in the town centre designed by artist Tony Stallard. It is the latest in a series of unique pieces of public art in the town. He also visited Hall Place & Gardens, where he planted a tree in the gardens close to where his mother, Her Royal Highness Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent CI, planted a tree in 1952.
