Dukezong (Shangri-La), Ancient Tibetan Town in Southwest China, Destroyed by Fire.
This is a tribute to this Tibetan Town. I lived there in 2013. It is tragic that the whole town has been destroyed by fire. The loss of cultural and historical artifacts is unimaginable. Dukezong Ancient Town was the best preserved ancient town with a 1300-year-old history in Tibetan area known as Shangri-la. Since a long time ago, it was an important town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road.

Exlopring China: Shangri La
During my trip to China in 2013, I had the opportunity to visit Shangri-La one of the most beautiful and spiritual citties I ever visited. It was truly beautiful seeing the Songzanlin Monastery with golden roofs, pushing the prayer wheel with local tibetans and dancing with them in old-town square.

Dukezong , meaning the city of the moon , has more than 1,300 years old and was a regular crossing point in the southern Silk Road . It was built in the seventh century when Tibet emerged as a unified empire and had control of the region. The city has some of the best known of the Tibetan tradition monuments and buildings. The Shangri -La County , where the city , bordering with the Tibet Autonomous Region , adopted its name in 2001 after recognizing the novel Lost Horizon , written by James Hilton in 1933 , and it describes a kind of earthly paradise. The novel got the name of this fictitious place was applied by extension to any earthly paradise but particularly a mythical Himalayan region : a land of permanent happiness , isolated from the outside world. In the novel, people living in Shangri -La are almost immortal , so adventurers and explorers have never stopped trying to find the lost paradise.
Many tourist presentations Dukezong describe it as the largest and best preserved of all Tibetan counties of China Tibetan town . But like hundreds of Chinese cities and counties, Shangri -La has renewed his old neighborhood , making it one of the biggest tourist attractions , full of shops and inns .
By limiting with Tibet , Tibetan history and culture in this part of the province of Yunan have a strong presence . Most of its inhabitants are of this ethnicity , although ethnic Chinese also reside Lisu , Yi and Naxi . Although county officials have managed to garner in recent years the neutrality of China and Tibet, a while now there is evidence of tensions among the population.
