Black Swans on the outer Lakes of Lake Dumbleyung , Western Australia
Black Swan | BirdLife Australia
birdlife.org.au/bird-profile/black-swan
Black Swans are widespread throughout much of Australia, and occur wherever there is a wetland, from river estuaries, bays and great lakes to inundated pasture and water-meadows. In some places, where the wetlands are permanent, Black Swans are sedentary, remaining throughout the year. However, where the wetlands dry out for part of the year, swans are forced to disperse over wide distances in search of suitable water, and have even been recorded swimming in isolated waterholes surrounded by vast tracts of arid stony desert.
Black swan - Wikipedia

Warriup Swamp: With Elders Eugene Eades and Carol Pettersen in the footsteps of Miernam ancestors
A film featuring Elders Eugene Eades and Carol Pettersen on a visit to Warriup Swamp, also know as Mullocullup Nature Reserve, east of Albany near Green Range, on Western Australia's South Coast. Warriup Swamp has significance for many Noongar families of the south coast - the Miernam or Menang People. Each family carries its own stories or 'passports of knowledge' for Mullocullup. In this film Eugene & Carol speak of knowledge passed to them through their families.
At Warriup Swamp Eugene Eades says: “All freshwater is sacred. What’s sacred should remain sacred and be treated that way. We want to bring the sacred back in—it’s part of our heritage, it’s part of our culture—we want to restore that as close as we possibly can.”
Carol Pettersen says: “You got to honour the spirits. You got to keep the spirits alive, otherwise the land will die. We have seen this is many places—the land actually dies if we don’t maintain that connection with it. You look at the shape of this swamp—it’s a living, spiritual entity and our presence all the time adds energy to those spirits—they need us, we need them.”
Warriup Swamp is not only special for Noongar people, but a priceless asset for the whole community.
We acknowledge the connections and stories held by many other families… still to be told.
This film forms part of the Green Skills' Gondwana Link Wetlands project. The film was created by film maker Frank Rijavec. This project is supported by funding from the Western Australian Government’s State Natural Resource Management Program (supported by Royalties for Regions), and the Koorabup Trust. It is also supported by Gondwana Link.

Meteorite Island - The Ice Age Era Sacred Aboriginal Site Being Destroyed by the Disgusting Environmentally Corrupt Shire of Dumbleyung - Mined for the Yellow Sand for Road Resurfacing and this sand Contains Ancient Aboriginal Relics and Probably Ancient Aboriginal Remains, not to mention this Island hosts a unique biodiversity of flora and fauna
To the people of Dumbleyung, to the farmers of Dumbleyung, when I stumbled across this ancient place, I really wanted to keep it a secret, but now I have no choice. I ask you all to please take a good hard look at this video, look at the true beauty that I show you and the world, this place is in no doubt, one of the most beautiful places in Dumbleyung, and in South Western Australia.
You must stand up for this place, for the rich biodiversity, the flora and fauna, the generations of animals that have been stuck on this Island since the surrounding land was cleared by our early Pioneers.
There is no escape for these animals, the surrounding salt plains is simply too vast for them to leave, and to dangerous, due to the extreme salinity and the lack of vegetation, this place has many species of animals such as snakes, reptiles, goannas, frogs, insects, quails, water birds, and so much more... it is truly a Island rich is Flora and Fauna, some of which that does not even grown on the mainland.
There is a section of Freshwater Paperbark Swamps that do not exist anywhere in the Dumbleyung Region, these Swamps will right now be full to the brim of freshwater with beautiful species of native Frogs calling out from the water and underneath the rich yellow sand. Western Spotted Frogs, Shoe Maker Frogs, Bleating Toadlets, Moaning Frogs, Motorbike Frogs, Turtle Frogs, Banjo Frogs and so many more!
A huge breeding cycle is about to begin and local wildlife and bird life both native and migratory will flock to this region to breed. Be prepared to see thousands of birds, Black Swans, Seagulls, Terns, Pelicans, you name it, we'll see it.
This land could set this farmer up for life, this land could educate your children's, your grand children, their children, and their grand children.
So some of you may say, I am a trouble maker.... now let me ask you this, am I a really a trouble maker? To the Shire of Dumbleyung, yes I am! and maybe in your eyes I am also, but take a good hard look at this land in the Dumbleyung / Kukerin area and all the land surrounding of Southern and Mid West Western Australia, their land and your land, your neighbours land.
Open your eyes to the destruction we have done in the last 130 years ... nothing is left, everything is gone and dead, please I ask you, take a good hard look at the death and destruction that surrounds us.... and still we continue to poison the land, and rip down our trees.
We must preserve places like this, for the sake of our children.... because I do this for them, and I know I will not be forgotten for my efforts and maybe one day I will be remembered for it. I know there are beautiful people out there who truly care and volunteer to save our community, our environment, our everything, I am only a quiet man, you all know that, so this is my way of giving to Dumbleyung. We must take action!
Will Farmers be still farming Wheat and Sheep in another 100 Years? I honestly do not think so! We must start to focus on really saving our land and stop the over cropping of land, even the cropping of salt affected land!
Mr Bain gave the Shire of Dumbleyung is multi million dollar property, Now let me ask you this! Can you image the possibilities if the Shire of Dumbleyung actually reseeded the land with natural flora and trees and reintroduced this land with the original species of fauna, wild life which does not exist in the Dumbleyung area anymore due to salinity and land clearing., now imagine the potential, imagine the potential for your children and their children, the possible tourism dollars, worth far more than the money they will make from cropping the land.
The Shire of Dumbleyung is run by a bunch of idiots, the nepotism runs rife, mate looking after mates, you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours... it is so simple, things must change! But I see no changes! I see nothing to look forward to for you and for our children, just take a look at the population decline over the last 20 to 30 years... take a look at our little tiny school which will likely close one day in the future.
The Shire of Dumbleyung will pay the price for this destruction and unfortunately they will pass this off to all of you rate payers out there, including I.
Hate me or Love me... I aint walking away, I will never give up my fight and I will always be a thorn in the side to the Shire of Dumbleyung... for the sake of our future and your children.
Understanding BUSHFIRES in AUSTRALIA'S SHRINKING FORESTS
Australia is experiencing one of it's Worst Bushfire seasons in 2020, in what little Forest and Woodlands that still remain.
ABC Radio Night Life discusses What makes a forest a forest? What state are Australia's native forests in? And what is their role in combating climate change?
There are estimates that native forests cover about 19 percent of Australia's land mass.
Aside from providing a resource for the timber industry, native forests also help provide water, a home for native species, a destination for tourists, and operate as a carbon storage.
So what's their future?
Professor David Lindenmayer, a Forest Ecologist with the Fenner School of the Environmental at the Australian National University, also an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellow; and by Joe Fontaine, an ecologist and Lecturer in Environmental Science at Murdoch University joined Nightlife to look into that question.

Lake Monger (Perth, Western Australia)
Lake Monger is a large urban wetland on the Swan Coastal Plain in suburban Perth, Western Australia. Less than five kilometres from the city of Perth and situated alongside the Mitchell Freeway, it runs approximately north-west to south-east towards the Swan River and consists of 70 hectares of mainly open shallow water with an island of 1.3 hectares in the south-west corner. The 110 hectares of lake and the surrounding parklands are known as the Lake Monger Reserve.
The lake is presently used extensively for recreation as well as being a major tourist attraction with up to 12,000 visitors per week.
A 3.5 km paved walking/cycling track encircles the lake which takes about 30 minutes to traverse by foot. Ample car parking, playground equipment and barbecue facilities are also provided.
The lake was originally part of a series of freshwater wetlands running north from the Swan River along the coastal plain for approximately 50 km. European settlement led to many of the wetlands areas being drained for land reclamation to take advantage of the fertile soil for farming enterprises, and for expansion of parks and recreation areas. Lake Monger is one of the last major wetlands remaining within close proximity to the city. The City of Perth itself sits on an area of reclaimed wetlands.

Lake Ninan
Lake Ninan is located about 10 km south west of the wheatbelt town of Wongan Hills. The best access to the lake is from the Calingiri-Wongan Hills Road.
It is part of an important wetland area and is home to permanent and migratory water birds including ducks, ibis, heron, swans and pelicans.
In 1910, water from the lake was carted by camels to Wongan Hills for use in the steam trains.
In 1917 and again in 1963 the lake actually overflowed with the deepest part of the lake reaching 4.5 metres.
Before salinity became a problem there were even species of fish found in the lake. Today the lake can be up to 600% more salty than the sea.
For a time in the 1950-60s salt was collected at the lake.
There is a large rest area next to the lake with seats, table and a shelter.
The lake reserve covers 700 ha with 259 Ha being managed by CALM / DPaW since 1963 as an 'A' class reserve. The shire manages 245 Ha as a recreation reserve.
