Iona is located just off the Isle of Mull's south west tip. Most people staying on Mull make the journey over to Iona at some point during their stay and this little video shows you a little of what there is to see.
The Isle of Iona plays an important role in the history of christianity. Iona Abbey can be visited and tickets are bought on the island.
There are some amazing beaches on Iona and we look at a few of these, as well as Dun I the island's highest point.
We hope this video is useful for anyone interested in things to do on Iona.

Blethering Ben - 61 - An introduction to Iona
A bit more blethering than usual in this one, and with good reason, as Iona has a lot of history and interest packed into such a small area. Anyway, I paid my first visit to the island recently and headed up Dun I, the highest point on the island, to give an overview of this beautiful place and its history.
Mull - A hike above Salen, to Dun Cnoc na Sroine [June 10, 2017]
Seen a lot of Mull this June. This one little hike here was a gem - but apart from that quite a challenge for the girl ... No scrambles but at times somewhat rocky/slippery and a bit boggy too.
The target of the day was an archaeological feature, a Dun. A kind of fortified dwelling of the Iron Age.
As usual, some route information provided.

Scotland Tour: Hey, Pharaoh, We're Up Here...in Scotland
We all know about Stonehenge and England's famous stone circles. But I didn't realize Scotland had its fancy-pants knuckle-draggers, too. (That's your cue, caveman sympathizers.)
At Clava Cairns, set in a peaceful grove of trees just a few minutes' drive from Inverness, are the remains of three thought-provoking stone igloos, each cleverly constructed 4,000 years ago with a passageway that the sun illuminates, as if by magic, with each winter solstice. Wandering through these, knowing they're as old as the pyramids, was a trip highlight (one of many).
One thing I love about our tours is that each day, our hardworking guides have several of these little treats to spring on us. They set the historic context, then turn us loose. It's as if we hiked there ourselves, but still had a professor on call. This is one of the reasons why so many of the people who sign up for our tours start their request for our sales material by saying, I'm not the tour-taking type, but... and find our tours just right for their independent style.

Outlander Season 3 filming is now finished in Scotland and the cast and crew are are now filming in south Africa. While walking the dog at the Castle I could see the crew filming some of the scenes for the new season 3 at Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh, which will serve as Ardsmuir Prison.
While a prisoner at Ardsmuir Prison during the beginning of season 3 , Jamie meets Lord john Grey. ( Jamie was captured after the Battle of Culloden ) The two of them strike up a friendship, But Lord John Grey has more than friendship in mind. While this is a one sided affair, the two men form a strong friendship.

Inside the Abbey Church of IONA, May 2014 edited
The Abbey has been restored after years of neglect and abandonment. Columba arrived about AD 563---An Irish Monk and his early monastery had survived for centuries following Viking raids from about 795.Restoration was commenced in 1899 and its preservation continues today via the Iona Community
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the Abbey Church , the cloisters and museum and walking around the Island , climbing Dun 1 etc...---a very peaceful place and a good place to reflect on one's own 'Lived Experience'.

Scotland's Islands
Check your local public television station for this Rick Steves’ Europe episode or watch it on We'll begin on the tranquil Isle of Iona, where Christianity first reached the shores of Scotland. Then we'll visit another of the Inner Hebrides, road-tripping across the Isle of Skye, where we'll explore Iron Age forts, peat fields, a venerable distillery, thatched crofter huts, and the dramatic Trotternish Peninsula. Finally, we'll sail to Orkney — more Nordic than Celtic — with its stony remnants of a thriving Iron Age civilization and evocative reminders of the 20th-century wartime harbor at Scapa Flow.

Montrose, Angus
Montrose is a coastal resort town and former royal burgh in Angus, Scotland. It is situated 38 miles north of Dundee between the mouths of the North and South Esk rivers. It is the northernmost coastal town in Angus and developed at a natural harbour that traded in skins, hides and cured salmon in medieval times.
With a population of approximately 12,000, the town functions as a port, but the major employer is GlaxoSmithKline, which was saved from closure in 2006. The skyline of Montrose is dominated by the 220-foot steeple, designed by James Gillespie Graham and built between 1832 and 1834.

Heroes Of Kohima / El Alamein - Bagpipes
These two 6/8-marches of the british World War II military history remind us on the Battle of Kohima in East India in 1944, where armed forces of the royal army defended the ridge of Kohima against stronger japanese troops. The capture of India could have been prevented.
In the two battles of El Alamein in 1942/43 in North Africa german troops of Rommel´s Afrikakorps were defeated by the royal army under FM Montgomery. German troops left Africa and the allied landings in Sicily in later 1943 became possible.
Enjoying the Wonders of Scotland in the Highlands
There’s something powerful about combining dramatic natural scenery with dramatic history. And no place does that quite like Glencoe, a lush and wild valley in the Scottish Highlands. I’m here now with my Scottish friend and tour guide Colin Mairs.
When I’m researching my guidebooks, I don’t have extra hours to take hikes like I’d like to. But simply walking a few steps into nature from a car park makes a huge difference. Get out, leave a few footprints, eat the wind.
(This is Day 89 of my “100 Days in Europe” series. As I travel with Rick Steves’ Europe Tours, research my guidebooks, and make new TV shows, I’m reporting on my experiences across Europe. Still to come: England, Scotland, Germany, Switzerland, and more. Follow along at

About this location
On the top of the highest point on Calton Hill, the Nelson Monument stands offering one of the best panoramic views of Edinburgh from its viewing platform. Originally built between 1807-1815 as a tribute to Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson, an esteemed British officer in the Royal Navy, for both his role in the victory of the Battle of Trafalgar as well as his death in the same battle, this monument was also often used by ships in the port of Leith and the Firth of Forth to tell time and allow them to set their chronometers. Installed in 1853, a time ball still sits on top of the monument and is raised and lowered manually to mark the time.
Abandoned Crofters Cottage and Mirrorlike Loch Rannoch
It's early October and a mild day in the Highlands. We are in the area of Loch Rannoch and the loch is mirror like. Stunning. The ruins of an old crofter's cottage (or at least that what I think it is) catches our attention. Enjoy!
