DUNBAR CAVE 1865
There's an old proverb that tells us it's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. We can tell you from experience there's no better place to prove that proverb than in deep darkness of a cave. And of course in the Wild Side world... that opens up an opportunity for adventure. So we take you to Dunbar Cave State Park in Clarksville where...once you get past some modern footlights... you can have a subterranean experience much like it must have been in 1865.

Dunbar Cave State Park - OptOutside - Park Travel Review
We visited Dunbar Cave State Park in Clarksville, Tennessee for our #OptOutside adventure on Black Friday 2019. We enjoyed hiking the Lake Trail, Recovery Trail, and Dunbars Path. It was a great way to spend a couple hours with our family.
From the park's web site: The 144-acre day-use park is centered around Dunbar Cave which has been used by mankind for thousands of years. Dunbar Cave is named for Thomas Dunbar, who settled near the cave in the 1780s. From the Paleo-indians of the last ice-age to the 20th century music resorts,
people have long been attracted to the natural air conditioning and ample spring water provided by the cave.
At Happy Trails Hiking, we encourage you to live the life you love and seek solace and adventure in America’s Parks and Public Lands. We strive to motivate and inspire people through travel as well as fitness and nutrition.

This is Dunbar Cave State Park in Clarksville Tennessee.
The site is significant for two reasons. The first is of course the cave, which was used by Native Americans for shelter and possibly ceremonial purposes since Archaic period up to 10,000 years ago.
In fact, the cave contains very rare petroglyphs and charcoal drawings that are 800 years old, from the Mississippian period. There are symbols thought to represent a connection between the middle world -- or Earth -- and the Underworld -- or death. And there's a depiction of a humanoid figure -- possibly a warrior or a supernatural figure.
The other aspect of this site is that it was an entertainment venue in the 1940s, built and run by Country singer Roy Acuff. Big Bands would place on the stage platform outside the cave mouth.

Welcome to Dunbar Cave State Park
While the country music artist, Roy Acuff, purchased Dunbar Cave and its surrounding park - located at 401 Dunbar Cave Road in Clarksville, Tennessee - in 1948, it became a state natural area in 1973 when Governor Winfield Dunn purchased the area and designated it as such.
Today, activities and events are held there regularly, and it’s also available for reservations. Additionally, there are trails for those who like to exercise or go for a quiet walk and enjoy nature. It’s also a worthy place to relax, its lake offering a view for those who are looking for one. The lake is frequently occupied by ducks, geese, and cranes.
