Crossing Dundas Aqueduct on the Kennet and Avon Canal
Some work friends and I hired a narrow boat for the day and cruised along from the historic City of Bath to the Avoncliff Aqueduct and back on a gorgeously sunny bank holiday weekend. This is a short video we took of us passing over the Dundas Aqueduct and marks the first time I’ve been brave enough to fly the DJI Mavic Pro over water!

Completed in 1810 by John Rennie, the spectacular Dundas Aqueduct carries the Kennet & Avon Canal over the River Avon and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. That means it's as important as Stonehenge! In fact, it was the first canal structure to be designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1951.
Named after Charles Dundas, the first chairman of the Kennet and Avon Canal Company, the aqueduct forms the junction between the Kennet and Avon Canal and the largely derelict Somerset Coal Canal. The short stretch of the Somerset Coal Canal still in water forms Brassknocker Basin, used for boat moorings, cycle hire and a cafe. A short walk further there is the Dundas Wharf where the small tollhouse, warehouse and crane still stand.

Towpath Trail - Trowbridge to Marina Dundas near Bath
The origin of the Towpath Trail was for transportation purposes. Before there was engine to pull the boats, horses used to pull the boats up and down the canal. The Towpath Trail is now one the many National Cycling Network in the UK.
A Swim From Dundas Aqueduct to Claverton Weir on the River Avon
Here's one of my favourite swims on the Avon, starting on the Wiltshire/Somerset (BANES) boundary).
We parked at Conkwell in Wiltshire and walked about 1km down a rocky footpath to Dundas Aqueduct in Bath & North-East Somerset (BANES). After arriving at Claverton Weir we took another footpath back up the valley to a minor road in Warleigh (through the garden of a friendly gentleman named Tony). We followed the road back to the car through Warleigh Wood.
The swim is a little under 2km (1 & 1/4 miles) downstream and an easy swim for those new to open water swimming (though egress from the river can be tricky due to steep embankments).
During our swim we encountered heron, damselfly, kingfisher, children, mink, thousands of small fish (and one seemingly blind big fish), rope swings, pigeons, butterflies, trains, eels, cattle, horse chestnuts, chickweed, bull reed, lots of flowers, aeroplanes - all choreographed to the sound of the wind in the willows.

Flying around Warleigh Manor, Bath
A flight around Warleigh Manor near Bath, built in 1815. Warleigh Manor was a manor house until the 1960s, then a school and now split into multiple houses.
A short trip along the river to Warleigh Weir, over the canal. A couple of trains appear near the end.
Lovely part of the world!

Bath is a town set in the rolling countryside of southwest England, known for its natural hot springs and 18th-century Georgian architecture. Honey-coloured Bath stone has been used extensively in the town’s architecture, including at Bath Abbey, noted for its fan-vaulting, tower and large stained-glass windows. The museum at the site of the original Roman-era Baths includes The Great Bath, statues and a temple.
Bath is in the valley of the River Avon, 97 miles (156 km) west of London and 11 miles (18 km) south-east of Bristol. The city became a World Heritage Site in 1987. Bath became part of the county of Avon in 1974, and, following Avon's abolition in 1996, has been the principal centre of Bath and North East Somerset.
The city of Bath became a spa with the Latin name Aquæ Sulis (the waters of Sulis) c. AD 60 when the Romans built baths and a temple in the valley of the River Avon, although hot springs were known even before then. Bath Abbey was founded in the 7th century and became a religious centre; the building was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries. In the 17th century, claims were made for the curative properties of water from the springs, and Bath became popular as a spa town in the Georgian era. Georgian architecture, crafted from Bath stone, includes the Royal Crescent, Circus, Pump Room, and Assembly Rooms where Beau Nash presided over the city's social life from 1705 until his death in 1761. Many of the streets and squares were laid out by John Wood, the Elder, and in the 18th century the city became fashionable and the population grew. Jane Austen lived in Bath in the early 19th century. Further building was undertaken in the 19th century and following the Bath Blitz in World War II.
The city has software, publishing and service-oriented industries. Theatres, museums, and other cultural and sporting venues have helped make it a major centre for tourism with more than one million staying visitors and 3.8 million day visitors to the city each year. There are several museums including the Museum of Bath Architecture, Victoria Art Gallery, Museum of East Asian Art, and the Holburne Museum. The city has two universities: the University of Bath and Bath Spa University, with Bath College providing further education. Sporting clubs include Bath Rugby and Bath City F.C. while TeamBath is the umbrella name for all of the University of Bath sports teams.
