Dundas Museum & Archives - Preparing the Tapestry for Storage
Preparing the Museum to become a construction zone took a lot of planning and work. One of the most challenging issues was how to remove and store one of the Museum's most important artifacts: the tapestry by John Chabanex, a weaver who worked in London between 1739 and 1746.
The tapestry, called Summer, had resided on a frame in the textile case in the second gallery since 1962. It was donated to the museum by the heirs of Dr. Sydney-Smith who was given it by the Duke of Wellington for his service in the Battle of Waterloo. It was used as the backdrop for various displays over the years, although lately the tapestry was hidden as new exhibits were presented.
Dundas Museum Openings, 1956 and 1963
When His Honour the Lieutenant-Governor Louis O. Breithaupt presided over the grand opening of the Dundas Historical Museum in 1956, Dr. J.G. Ross filmed the event for posterity. This eight minute film begins with the Lieutenant-Governor's motorcade making its way to Town Hall before arriving at the Museum for the front lawn festivities.
Frank K. Nelson filmed the opening festivities of the addition to the Museum in 1963. This colour film shows lots of people crowding the Museum to have a look with the documentation of the exhibits themselves. There are lots of dresses, toys, and the opening exhibition - antique glassware. The event included a tea in the Assembly Room over which a multitude of helpful volunteers presided.
There may be gaps in the video. Our apologies.
