Final Qualifying at Irvine Golf Club
The Final Qualifying for the Ricoh Women's British Open was played at Irvine Golf Club in miserable conditions. Patricia Sanz was dressed up in full waterproofs to take her first drive.
Western Gailes Golf Club, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland
Western Gailes Golf Club, Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland - Located in North Ayrshire about 10 minutes from Troon, Western Gailes is considered by many as the hidden gem of Scottish links. Dating back to 1897, the club provides a combination of the traditional and modern style links. Contours of the land coupled with severely placed bunkers make it a fair but challenging links. Relying on natural defenses created by the sand dunes and wind, Western Gailes runs in a loop with its toughest stretch along the banks of the dunes that generally plays into the prevailing wind. It comes as no surprise that professional and amateur golfers alike continue to travel from all corners of the world to play this enjoyable links course.
Western Gailes has hosted many notable tournaments over the years which include serving as a final qualifying venue of The Open at Royal Troon and Turnberry, along with the Curtis Cup and eight Scottish Amateur Championships. In addition to the course, the Clubhouse is reason for a visit as it sits above the links with views across the Firth of Clyde to the Isle of Arran, Ailsa Craig and beyond…making Western Gailes an experience you’ll never forget.

Broken record' McIlroy confident of finding form
Irvine (United Kingdom) (AFP) - Rory McIlroy joked he is beginning to sound like a broken record as he strives to regain his best form ahead of Thursday's Scottish Open and next week's Open Championship.
As world number four he tees up on the Dundonald Links course, on the Scottish west coast and just to the south of Glasgow, as the highest ranked player in the field.
However, four-time major champion McIlroy is coming off the embarrassment of missing the halfway cut by four shots while hosting last week's Irish Open.
He and his wife Erica took the two-hour ferry from Belfast to Cairnryan in Scotland on Monday, with McIlroy heading straight to the practice putting green upon his arrival.
After catching the ferry, I got to the course here late Monday afternoon and did some putting on my own, said McIlroy, who recorded 33 putts for each of his two rounds in Northern Ireland last week.
I just was trying to figure out a couple things on my own and try to take ownership of what I'm really working on.
I worked a lot on routine. I feel like I've become quite bogged down in technical thoughts a little bit.
So, I need to focus more on my routine and how I approach a putt.
McIlroy got his first look at Dundonald Links, which is hosting the event for the first time, on Tuesday morning for a full 18-hole practice round before contesting Wednesday's Pro-Am.
- 'Putting it all together' -
It is the first time McIlroy is playing the event since 2014 when he shot a new course record 64 at Royal Aberdeen en route to sharing 14th place before then heading to Royal Liverpool and brilliantly claiming the Open Championship.
However, after a stop-start 2017 season beset by injuries and indifferent form, McIlroy is far from a favourite to win golf’s oldest major for a second occasion in four years.
He did finish in a share of seventh at The Masters but then horribly missed the cut in the US Open.
My game is close but then it's hard to sit up here and stand in front of a camera every single time and say to you guys it's close, because I sound a bit of a broken record after a few weeks, said a smiling McIlroy.
But really, it's not far away. I'm positive about it. I'm excited about my game. I feel like I'm doing a lot of good things.
And again, it's just putting it all together. Putting it all together, not just for one day but for four days; and not just for four days, to do it week-in and week-out.
Look, I've got a busy summer coming up. I'm potentially playing seven weeks out of eight or seven weeks out of nine. I've got a busy stretch coming up and I'm excited to play.
McIlroy will contest the opening two rounds at Dundonald Links in the company of good friend Rickie Fowler, who won the event in 2015, and defending Open champion Henrik Stenson.

Rory McIlroy sets sail for his putting renaissance at Scottish Open
IRVINE, Scotland (AP) -- Rory McIlroy is recreating his British Open build-up from 2014 in an attempt to rediscover some form for another shot at the claret jug at Royal Birkdale next week.
In the week prior to winning at Hoylake three years ago, McIlroy took the ferry from Northern Ireland to Scotland, played the Scottish Open at Royal Aberdeen and stumbled on a successful formula with his putting to take to the British Open.
Fast forward to this summer and the four-time major champion is looking to get out of a rut by playing the Scottish Open -- the leading warmup event for the British Open -- for the first time since 2014. Again, he took the ferry across to Scotland and he has also been working on simplifying his putting routine, after getting bogged down in technical thoughts.
The Open Championship is eight days away ... I need to see good signs in my golf game going in there to have a bit of confidence, the No. 4-ranked McIlroy said Wednesday at Dundonald Links, a course in west Scotland that is hosting the Scottish Open for the first time.
McIlroy had two separate periods out this year with a rib injury before missing the cut at two of his last three events -- the U.S. Open at Erin Hills last month and then at last week's Irish Open when he said his short game was not sharp enough.
Rory McIlroy won the 2014 British Open at Hoylake.

By continuing to insist his best form is close -- he said it again Wednesday -- McIlroy acknowledged that he is starting to sound like a broken record.
I'm excited about my game. I feel like I'm doing a lot of good things. And again, it's just putting it all together, not just for one day but for four days; and not just for four days, to do it week-in and week-out, said the Northern Irishman, who has just started a run of seven events potentially in an eight-week stretch.
I've gone through little periods like this in the past, and I've hit form and I've been able to run with it and sort of ride on the crest of a wave for a few months. I feel like that's not too far away.
Eight of the world's top 23 have chosen to play competitive golf at the Scottish Open rather than practice in the week leading up to Royal Birkdale.
Adam Scott is playing the event for the first time since 2009, while Rickie Fowler -- the 2015 Scottish Open champion -- is back after missing last year because of the busy summer schedule arising from golf being played at the Olympics.
Fowler started the Sunday of the Masters and the U.S. Open in contention this year, only to falter in the final round, and he feels like he'll be in good shape to challenge for the British Open with a week's preparation in Scotland.
Links golf is probably my favorite, No. 10-ranked Fowler said.
I enjoy playing the week before the majors just to get myself ready to go, check off some boxes. That way there's less prep the week of a major. The Scottish Open has been great for me going into the Open.”
