Visiting Dundrennan Abbey/ Kirkcudbright| Van Life Adventure in SCOTLAND part 2
places we visits while in Kirkcudbright was The Dundrennan Abbey, in Dundrennan, Scotland, near to Kirkcudbright, was a Cistercian monastery in the Romanesque architectural style, established in 1142 by Fergus of Galloway, King David I of Scotland (1124–53), and monks from Rievaulx Abbey. Of course the pretty quirky little town of Kirkcudbright, was a surprise for an Instagramable snaps worthy around the town.

Sweetheart Abbey, New Abbey, Dumfries, Scotland
Sweetheart Abbey
Sweetheart Abbey (Gd: An Abaid Ur), 8 miles (13 km) south of Dumfries, near to the Nith in south-west Scotland, was a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1275 by Dervorguilla of Galloway, daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway, in memory of her husband John de Balliol. His embalmed heart, in a casket of ivory and silver, was buried alongside her when she died; the monks at the Abbey then renamed the Abbey in tribute to her. Their son, also John, became king of Scotland but his reign was tragic and short. The depredations suffered by the Abbey in subsequent periods, have caused both the graves to be lost. The abbey, built in deep-red, local sandstone, was founded as a daughter house to Dundrennan Abbey; this Novum Monasterium (New Monastery), became known as the New Abbey.

Whitby and its Abbey | England #4
Full steam ahead! A visit to the English harbour town of Whitby. Once one of England's most important sea ports. The main landmark of this busy tourist town is the abbey ruins, towering high above the houses. Whitby was the location of a synod of the Northumbrian church in 664. The gathering is often remembered as 'the' synod where the Roman manner of calculating the date of Easter was chosen above that of the Irish.

Sweetheart Abbey
The history of Sweetheart Abbey is an unusual love story.
The abbey was founded in 1273 by Lady Devorgilla of Galloway, in memory of her husband John Balliol, who had died in 1268. After her husband died the lovelorn Lady Devorgilla kept his heart in a small ornate ivory casket, trimmed in silver and carried it with her always. Before she died she left orders that the box containing John Balliol’s heart should be buried with her, beneath the high altar of the abbey in 1290, where it remained clasped to her bosom. The monks called the abbey Sweetheart after their founder’s enduring love for her husband. Suitable for Children and Family viewing
Kelso Abbey
Built in 1128 and the years following, Kelso Abbey was one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture.
Finally finished, it was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and St John in 1243. It was soon one of the largest and richest in Scotland, having a superb library in medieval times.

Old House (1938)
Galloway, Scotland.
Nice shot of an old country cottage decorated with symbolic crosses. Several close up shots of some of the crosses - most of them read 'Memento Mori' - Remember Death. Voiceover says that most of them were brought by local mason from the ruins of Dundrennan Abbey nearby - they must have been gravestones. Several shots of the ruins of the abbey - walls are still there, although ruined, but there is no roof. Cut back to the strange house.
