Duin 45 , dune 45 ,Sossusvlei Namibie Duin 45, dune 45, 360° panorama
Dune 45 is so called because it lies 45 km past Sesriem on the road to Sossusvlei. It is also known as the most photographed dune in the world; because of its unusually simple and fascinating shape, and its proximity to the road, that make it convenient for visitors to stop by and take pictures. It is 80 meters high and it is not very steep, so that it can easily be climbed.
Namibia roadtrip day 10: road to Sossusvlei watch the sunrise over the sand dunes and visit dune 45
Travel with Simon on my Namibia road trip as we head out into the sand dunes at Sossuvlei to see the biggest dunes on earth. See how not to avoid getting stuck in the sand! On the way back to camp at Sesriem we will stop for breakfast at Dune 45.
On day 10 of our Namibia roadtrip we are heading out into the sand dunes at Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert to watch the sunrise.
The Sossusvlei road from the the campsite at Sesriem is through thick sand, if you don't want to get stuck then park your car at the 2x4 car park and take the shuttle. It's cheap and runs about every 15 minutes in open safari vehicles with super flat tyres.
There are a number of dunes you can visit on the way back including Dune 45 (Big Daddy) which is possibly the most photographed individual dune and great for sunset (for viewing the sunset itself rather than the sun setting over the dunes). Another famous dune worth a visit is Dune 5 or Elim Dune.
Sossusvlei forms part of the Namib Naukluft park, but don't get confused, the Namib Naukluft is a very large park and to see the red sand dunes at Sossusvlei or to see Deadvlei you must enter through the park gate at Sesriem. The camp ground known as Namib Naukluft is some 100km away in a different section of the park entirely.

Sossusvlei is a salt and clay pan surrounded by high red dunes, located in the southern part of the Namib Desert, in the Namib-Naukluft National Park of Namibia. The name Sossusvlei is often used in an extended meaning to refer to the surrounding area (including other neighbouring vleis such as Dead Vlei and other high dunes), which is one of the major visitor attractions of Namibia.
The name Sossusvlei is of mixed origin, and roughly means dead end marsh. Vlei is the afrikaans word for marsh, while sossus is nama for no return or dead end. Sossusvlei owes this name to the fact that it is an endorheic drainage basin (i.e., a drainage basin without outflows) for the ephemeral Tsauchab River.
The Sossusvlei area belongs to a wider region of southern Namib with homogeneous features (about 32.000 km²) extending between rivers Koichab and Kuiseb. This area is characterized by high sand dunes of vivid pink-to-orange color, a consequence of a high percentage of iron in the sand and consequent oxidation processes. The oldest dunes are those of a more intense reddish color. These dunes are among the highest in the world; many of them are above 200 metres, the highest being the one nicknamed Big Daddy, about 380 metres high.
Traces in the sand, left by insects and other small animalsThe highest and more stable dunes are partially covered with a relatively rich vegetation, which is mainly watered by a number of underground and ephemeral rivers that seasonally flood the pans, creating marshes that are locally known as vlei; when dry, these pans look almost white in color, due to the high concentration of salt. Another relevant source of water for Sossusvlei is the humidity brought by the daily morning fogs that enter the desert from the Atlantic Ocean.
Fauna in the Sossusvlei area is relatively rich. It mostly comprises small animals that can survive with little water, including a number of arthropods, small reptiles and small mammalians such as rodents or jackals); bigger animals include antelopes (mainly oryxes and springboks) and ostrichs. During the flood season, several migrant bird species appear along the marshes and rivers. Much of the Sossusvlei and Namib fauna is endemic and highly adapted to the specific features of the Namib. Most notably, fog beetles such as the Namib Desert Beetle have developed a technique for collecting water from early morning fogs through the bumps in their back.
Deadvlei is another clay pan, about 2 km from Sossusvlei. A notable feature of Deadvlei is that it used to be an oasis with several acacia trees; afterwards, the river that watered the oasis changed its course. The pan is thus punctuated by blackened, dead acacia trees, in vivid contrast to the shiny white of the salty floor of the pan and the intense orange of the dunes. This creates a particularly fascinating and surrealistic landscape, that appears in uncountable pictures and that has been used as a setting for films and videos.Wikipedia

Many dunes (Dune 45) and the Sossusvlei, Namibia
We saw many dunes and climbed on the most famous: Dune 45. Dune 45 is a star dune in Sossusvlei, Namibia. Its name comes from the fact that it is 45km from Sesriem Canyon. Standing over 170m, it is composed of 5 million year old sand that was brought by the Orange River from the Kalahari Desert.
Sossusvlei is a clay pan in the central Namib Desert, lying within the Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia. Fed by the Tsauchab River, it is known for the high, red sand dunes which surround it forming a major sand sea. Vegetation, such as the camelthorn tree, is watered by infrequent floods of the Tsauchab River, which slowly soak into the underlying clay.
The Dead Vlei and Hidden Vlei clay pans lie near Sossusvlei.
