Trip of a Lifetime - Taieri Gorge Railway (HD)
New Zealand is centered in the Pacific Ocean and is 2 islands separated by a very large river called the Cook Strait. These islands are known as the North Island and the South Island. In the South Island we go look at New Zealand’s 4th biggest city, Dunedin. This city is famous for its city heritage. Today we look at one of the main tourist attractions in the city. Today we ride behind Dunedin Railway’s Taieri Gorge Railway excursion train which runs from Dunedin through the Taieri Gorge to Pukerangi centered near Central Otago. The line travels through some spectacular scenery and passes through many narrow tunnels, climbs steep grades and crosses over high constructed viaducts. Dunedin Railways own and operate 6 DJ class diesel locomotives built in Japan from the late 1960’s and operate a variety of passenger carriages dating from the old wooden cars in the 1920’s, to the more modern and recently refurbished carriages built as far back as the 1930’s. These carriages used to be used on daily express trains. This is a basic guideline of the trip including highlights of the excursion, on board features and a look at the impressive Dunedin Railway Station built in 1906. This railway is one of the world’s great train trips. Take a look at Dunedin Railway’s website at for more information on their scenic train trips and bookings. Hope you enjoy this video and make sure when you’re next in Dunedin you get a chance to go for a ride on the Taieri Gorge Railway!

Dunedin Railways - Dj's 1210 & 1227 to Christchurch (HD)
In late July 2019, Dunedin Railways was chartered by a private host to run a train from Christchurch to Dunedin behind two of their Dj class locomotives, consisting of two ADR carriages & an AG van. In this video we follow the re-positioning run of the train heading north to Christchurch along the Main South Line, starting out between Oamaru & Timaru and continuing up to Christchurch, enjoy!
Driver’s Eye View - Dunedin Railways - The Seasider - Dunedin to Waitati
Dunedin is one of the “must visit” places on New Zealand’s South Island. There is the highly scenic “Otago Peninsula” with penguins, albatross, New Zealand fur seals and much more to see, as well as two world class train rides starting from Dunedin’s magnificent station on most days.
In this video we enjoy awesome vistas across pristine sandy beaches normally reserved for the driver/engineer as our train makes its way along a narrow ledge cut into cliffs high above the turquoise sea and white sandy beaches far below.
I owe a massive thank you to Dunedin Railways for allowing me to place a camera in the driver’s cab for both the outward and return legs between Dunedin and Waitati.
I’ve just read about the tours offered by Dunedin Railways, they take New Zealand rail based holidays seriously, not just the stunning Taieri Gorge line, but the whole of the South Island. Please click on this link to see how Dunedin Railways can show you the scenery only rail passengers get to see -
Don’t tell my wife, but now I’ve seen the holidays on offer, I’m already planning a return trip to South Island.

Dunedin Railways - TGL & Santaland Express (HD)
On Sunday 6th December 2015 we capture two Taieri Gorge Railway excursions departing the stunning Dunedin Railway Station. First away was Dj 1209 with the Taieri Gorge Limited to Middlemarch. Secondly was a special 12 carriage train bound for Hindon known as the Santaland Express with Dj's 1227 & 1240 at the head plus DJ 3107 at the rear. Apologies for wind noise & shakiness during the video as the wind was quite heavy, enjoy anyway!
Dunedin city rails (HD)
Here we capture a day on the KiwiRail network down south in Otago's biggest city, Dunedin. Dunedin is also the home to Dunedin Railways which run scenic excursion trains up the Taieri Gorge, Palmerston and Waitati. We look at some mainline freight trains including a chase with train 926D, a few mainline shunts to Fonterra Taieri and a ballast shunt and the regular Taieri Gorge Railway services run behind Dj diesel class locomotives, enjoy!
Dunedin Railways - Walking the Taieri Gorge (HD)
On Sunday 7th May 2017, Dunedin Railways in conjunction with the South Dunedin Loins Club operated a 16 car excursion train that gives passengers a rare opportunity to walk a 5km length of the Taieri Gorge Railway from Flat Stream down to Deep Stream viaduct travelling in the direction towards Dunedin city. Afterwards, a BBQ lunch was held for the passengers at Hindon before a quick return run to Dunedin. We capture this event on board the train, walking the track and exclusive footage in the cab of a Dj class locomotive on the return run from Hindon, enjoy!

Dunedin, New Zealand
We took the train ride when our cruise ship (Voyager of the Seas) docked in Dunedin. The train we took went all the way to Middlemarch, which felt like the middle of nowhere.
It was a very good trip. I certainly hadn't seen anything like this gorge before. My kids loved it.

Taieri Gorge Railway Dunedin NZ
An ever so brief look at the Taieri Gorge Railway in Dunedin, New Zealand. Includes vision of locomotives DJ1227, 1209, and DJ3228. A cute little heritage railway operated entirely by volunteers who give their time and effort for free with a ready smile for their on board customers. Absolutely worth checking out and going for a ride if you are ever in Port Chalmers (Dunedin). The New Zealanders are absolutely not as anal as we are in Australia about standing close to or on the tracks the tracks on these heritage operations. They provide safety information, and everyone adheres to what they are told and no one gets hurt. A refreshing attitude.
