You can catch one of the local Dunedin buses to Corstorphine on route 32, 33, 34, 35 or 36. It will drop you off at the corner of Middleton Road and Stenhope Crescent where it is about 30 minutes walk to the start of the Tunnel Beach Walk.
-- About this video --
Today we are checking out a popular New Zealand beach that is not to be missed when visiting Dunedin! Tunnel Beach is one of the most famous beaches in New Zealand so it’s a Dunedin must do!
We are joined by a fellow backpacker as we take the bus from Dunedin’s Octagon out to Tunnel Beach. Here, it’s a 30 minute one way walk on the Tunnel Beach Walk to the wave eroded cliffs of Tunnel Beach where you can see archways, waterfalls and steep white cliffs. What’s more, we see exactly where the name comes from as we access the beach through a manmade tunnel.
Tunnel Beach is best accessed at low tide to get onto the beach itself. Otherwise, the scenery from atop the cliffs is still an awesome sight in Dunedin.
So what do you think of Tunnel Beach in Dunedin? Would you add it to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

-- About this video --
We’re in the New Zealand city of Dunedin! Today’s Dunedin travel activity is the classic city activity in going to a museum. This one is the Otago Museum which is not only a free thing to do in Dunedin (although some exhibitions you pay for) it’s also one of the things to do on a rainy day in Dunedin.
We walk to the Otago Museum which is within walking distance of Dunedin city centre. The museum is home to lots of fascinating displays that will keep you entertained for at least a couple of hours. It goes over the Pacific Cultures, Maori history in the South Island, European settlers, wildlife in the Otago region including New Zealand’s largest fossil, and “Animal Attic” a taxidermy land going through the evolution of animals according to Victorian theory. One of our highlights in the Otago Museum is the Butterfly Garden in the Otago Museum.
So what do you think of the Otago Museum? Would you add museum in New Zealand to your Dunedin itinerary when travelling New Zealand? LUK in the comments.

Elm Wildlife Tours in Dunedin – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – BackpackerGuide.NZ
Day 171: Want to know the best place for wildlife in New Zealand? Well, let us show you the Otago Peninsula with Elm Wildlife Tours in Dunedin! Today we’re seeing penguins, sea lions, seals, albatross and so much more!
Yesterday - Day 170 ➜
Tomorrow – Day 172 ➜
30 Tips for Backpacking in New Zealand ➜
-- About this video --
Today is our first day in Dunedin and the first Dunedin activity on our Dunedin itinerary is to join Elm Wildlife Tours. This is one of the best chances to see penguins, sea lions, penguins and native birds in their natural environments on the Otago Peninsula!
Elm Wildlife Tours picks us straight up from our Dunedin accommodation and takes us to the Otago Peninsula. This is where the wildlife happens. The wildlife on the Otago Peninsula consists of royal albatross, sea lions, seals, penguins and so much more.
As we make our way to the Taiaroa Head where the Royal Albatross Centre is we stop in a few secluded inlets to check out the wading birds of the Otago Peninsula.
After seeing albatross, we head to private conservation land that is only accessible with Elm Wildlife Tours. Here we have a super close encounter with New Zealand sea lions, yellow-eyed penguins and their chicks!
Next up, we get a viewing of a New Zealand fur seal colony much better than any that we’ve seen before.
If you’re looking for wildlife experiences in New Zealand then Elm Wildlife Tours has to be considered as a land-based tour with so much New Zealand wildlife to see! It’s has been one of the best wildlife tours in New Zealand that we’ve done. If you are wandering where to see penguins in New Zealand or where to see sea lions in New Zealand, then these are your best chances.

Docking in PORT CHALMERS (DUNEDIN) l New Zealand Cruise Vlog l Ep. 8
It's a new day which means we are in Port Chalmers (Dunedin). As you can see in this video, this port is a mix of industrial with some things within walking distance. However, there is really nothing to do in Port Chalmers which you'll see in a vlog or two. If you are not planning on doing a shore excursion here, consider taking a shuttle bus to Dunedin that your cruise line will most likely offer for around $15-$20 USD. Dunedin has more of a downtown area with lots of shops and cafes.
The tour I did today is called, NATURE’S WONDERS WILDLIFE SAFARI. I booked it through Norwegian Cruise Line though most cruise lines offer this tour. Here is the tour description from NCL's website:
“A scenic drive takes you past the charming towns of Sawyer's Bay, Roseneath and St. Leonard's, which all rest along the shores of beautiful Otago Harbor. Your drive then continues along the craggy coastline to Natures Wonders, located just beyond Taiaroa Head.
Arriving at the Center's Reception area, you'll board an 8-wheel drive vehicle (Argo), built specifically to take you places that are normally inaccessible, or a mini coach, to start your tour of the farm. You will swap vehicles half way through the tour.
The Otago Peninsula headland is arguably the most precious wildlife habitat in New Zealand and the farm owned by the Reid family is right on the forefront of this headland. Here, amidst truly spectacular scenery, the world's rarest penguins, the yellow-eyed Hoiho, the little blue penguins, the New Zealand fur seals, and the Spotted Shags all live in harmony.
Stop by the mythical Maui's Footprint location which offers breathtaking panoramic views over the Otago Peninsula. Descending from a height of 620 feet above sea level, you’ll stop at a breeding colony of Cormorants, also Spotted Shag, found nestled on a rugged cliff face that rises directly above the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
You’ll find a breeding colony of New Zealand Fur seals. It's a definite treat to watch them in their natural habitat, basking on the rocks and swimming in the pools. A beachfront ride will then bring you to Penguin Beach, where you'll be able to view little blue penguins in their nests, and if you are lucky, perhaps spot some very rare and shy yellow-eyed penguins.
Your route also ascends from the beach to the highest point on the farm. At 659 feet above sea level, this spot affords an absolutely amazing 360-degree view of this awesome peninsula and its remarkable natural setting.
Back in Dunedin, you’ll have a brief tour of some of the city's highlights before returning to the pier.”
As always, make sure to watch in HD for the best video quality! Hope you enjoy! :)

The Royal Albatross Centre: Albatross & Blue Penguins in Dunedin – New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year

-- About this video --
This late afternoon, we are making our way to Dunedin’s wildlife hot spot, the Otago Peninsula. This time, we’re checking out the Royal Albatross Centre for a New Zealand wildlife experience with royal albatross and little blue penguins in Dunedin.
First, we take the Royal Albatross Centre tour where we get exclusive access to the royal albatross viewing hides where we can see royal albatross in their natural environment without disturbing them. We can’t believe how close we are getting to the albatross. It’s a unique wildlife experience in New Zealand!
We also tour the military battery of Taiaroa Head, before going to the Royal Albatross Cafe and waiting for our second tour at the Royal Albatross Centre, seeing little blue penguins on the Otago Peninsula.
When night falls, this is the best time to see the little blue penguins return in rafts back to their nests on Pilot Beach just below the Royal Albatross Centre. It’s one of the best places to watch little blue penguins in New Zealand.
So what do you think of the Royal Albatross Centre tours? Would you add them to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments.

-- About this video --
Yesterday we had an awesome day wildlife spotting outside of Dunedin, but let’s check out the things to do in Dunedin city centre! First up on our Dunedin travel itinerary is the Cadbury World Chocolate Factory Tour.
Cadbury Chocolate’s origins are in the UK but it is huge in New Zealand! In fact, you’ll find more chocolate flavour varieties in Cadbury chocolate bars in New Zealand than you will in the UK. Because we are a big sucker for chocolate (who isn’t) we thought we’d go check out Cadbury World in Dunedin.
You can’t miss the bright purple building in the middle of Dunedin. We head in and first check out the Cadbury World mini museum to learn about the journey of cacao, how it was first discovered, how chocolate was invented, then how Cadbury started it’s now huge empire of chocolate factories around the world.
Then the Cadbury chocolate factory tour in New Zealand begins. We have to give up most of our belonging as we can only take ourselves and each other onto the chocolate factory tour. However we are given clear plastic bags to fill up with chocolate throughout the chocolate factory tour.
By the end of the Cadbury chocolate tour, Laura has a full bag of chocolate while Robin somehow has the same empty bag that he start with. After the tour, we have a hot chocolate at the Cadbury Cafe in Dunedin.
So what do you think of the Cadbury World Chocolate Factory Tour? Would you add it to your Dunedin travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!

-- About this video --
It’s our third day in Dunedin city and today we are getting out on the water with Monarch Wildlife Cruises in Dunedin. We’re going to be boarding the vintage M.V. Monarch and first hitting the waters of the Dunedin Harbour and following alongside the Otago Peninsula. Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula are a hotspot for wildlife in New Zealand so this is one of the best places for a wildlife cruise in New Zealand.
We learn about the history and harbour wildlife as we cruise through the Dunedin Harbour, as we get to the end of the harbour we start to see more wildlife activity with sea lions, and Otago shag colony, a seal colony on Taiaroa Head. As we get further away from the coast, we start to see more seabirds that you would only usually get to see near the subantarctic islands, like albatross and cape petrels.
Monarch Wildlife Cruises has been another great wildlife experience in New Zealand and wildlife experience in Dunedin. If you want to see the wildlife of the Otago Peninsula then Monarch is an awesome options for a New Zealand wildlife encounter!
So what do you think of Monarch Wildlife Cruises and Tours? Would you add this to your New Zealand itinerary? LUK in the comments.
