Sundays River Valley and the Greater Addo area - more than just elephants
This region covers the area from Colchester and the Sundays River Mouth through Addo to Kirkwood further north. This magnificent valley of citrus trees is in full bloom in October and bears fruit all winter.
The world-renowned Addo Elephant National Park proudly conserves the Big 7 in their natural environment within its borders. The reserve stretches from the rugged plains of the Karoo and the Darlington Dam to the untamed coastline which includes the largest coastal dune reserve in the southern hemisphere. Between Addo and the surrounding private game reserves the area offers unparalleled malaria free Big 5 game viewing options ranging from self-drive to guided tours on safari vehicles or on horseback.

Elephant park expands to include marine reserve

A lot of people get the wrong impression if they visit a private game reserve, or a zoo or a park, that that's how they should see animals, and here you really get to experience what their natural behaviour is in a natural system. And I think that kind of distinction is something that is very important.

We know now that the tourism aspects that are associated with conservation bring in about 11-12% of the national GDP, agriculture by comparison is half of that.

But the key element is making sure you can expand that beyond the big 5, so say that there is importance to the tortoises and the insects out there. And making sure you can educate your tourists around the greater elements of biodiversity conservation.

When you talk from a biodiversity perspective, Addo is probably the most diverse park in Africa. It's got the 4 biomes, in the form of Thicket, it's got Nama Karoo (semi-desert region of South Africa) in it, it's got Afro-montaine forests, and it's got grassy fynbos (shrubs). With the marine environment added in, it adds a unique dimension to it.

They are working on range expansion, and should be , within the next year, opening up a new section called Colchester, which will be down towards the coast, and it's another 14,000 hectares, and that will be very needed for this elephant population.
