Dungeness RNLI Lifeboat - 10 February 2010
Dover and Dungeness Lifeboats work together to tow in stricken beam trawler.
A 22m, 130 tonne beam trawler with gearbox failure required the assistance of two volunteer RNLI lifeboat crews when it broke down in the busy south west shipping lane of the English Channel on Wednesday (10 February).

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution exists to save lives at sea. A charity supported almost entirely by voluntary contributions with over 4,500 volunteer crews across the UK and Ireland. In June 2003 Dungeness and Littlestone lifeboats in South East Kent launched on exercise to demonstrate the crews and the boats to RNLI Storm Force members from across the South East of England. Visitors arrived by miniature steam trains running on the nearby Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway which supported the event.

Short clip of the RNLI Dungeness Lifeboat Pride and Spirit preparing to launch and greet its replacement.
It was pretty windy, about 18mph with gusts of 25.. By the end of the video, just after the old lifeboat launches, the windy picked up further, registering 25mph and gusting higher which meant that I could no longer fly.
I was disappointed not to be able to film the new lifeboat The Morrell arriving - but wasn't prepared to operate unsafely.

Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh. Dungeness is also the name given to a village situated along the beach, and to an important ecological site on the same location.
