Dunhinda Falls is a waterfall located about five kilometers (3.1 mi) from Badulla town in Sri Lanka. The Dunhinda Falls is one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful waterfalls. The water resembles a thin cloud as it cascades 63m downwards into a large pool. The backdrop to the fall is known as 'Dunhinda Adaviya'. 'Dunhinda' translates to 'spraying/vapor waterfall' - the word 'dun' means 'gave/was given', while 'hinda' means 'evaporate'.
To reach the Dunhinda waterfall, have to walk on a foot path about one kilo meter through the forest. The “Kuda Dunhinda falls” also can be seen from distance when going on that foot path and this journey is worth well for who loves the nature.

Dunhinda Ella | දුන්හිඳ ඇල්ල, Badulla (2015) - 1 of 4
Dunhinda is considered to be one of the most enchanting falls in Sri Lanka and is in close proximity to Badulla town. The water resembles a thin cloud as it cascades 63m downwards into a large pool. The backdrop to the fall is known as ‘Dunhinda Adaviya’. ‘Dunhinda’ translates to ‘spraying/vapour waterfall’ – the word ‘dun’ means ‘gave/was given’, while ‘hinda’ means ‘evaporate’.
This fall is steeped in history. The area was once inhabited by indigenous people – the Veddha tribe. During the time of King Rajasinhe, a giant fern got stuck at the top of the fall, between two mountains. This acted as a dam, which resulted in the flooding of Badulla town.
Seeing the gravity of the situation, the king entrusted the task of clearing the sluice to a person named ‘Ranhavadidaraya’. After toiling for three months he managed to clear the water and the town re-emerged.
The fern was swept away but got stuck again at a place now known as Pussellawa (‘pus’ meaning fern). It was the first fall on the island where a fee was introduced to view it. This applies to both local and foreign visitors.
Dunhinda Falls is 5km from Badulla town and from the main highway it is about 1km walk.

Special Note for the Viewers:
I’ve done this video to make you aware of the beauty of this place and please don’t misuse this information in order to ruin it. I’ve spent so much of time/money bringing this to you so that you may enjoy it.
I also have a very kind and humble request to make. Should you ever visit this place, you’re kindly requested to adhere to the following in order to save our Mother Nature not only for the future generations but for the current one as well:
* Avoid careless/irresponsible/money-oriented/mega tour groups or organizers.
* Travel in small groups as Mother Nature can’t afford so many footprints at once. Stick to the designated trails or hardback surfaces at all times.
* Minimize the use of polythene/plastic and do bring them back. Please don’t burn them in the wilderness. Even organic/bio-degradable waste is harmful to the nature and animals. Please stick to the simple rule of “if you pack it in, pack it out”.
* Use reusable water bottles, plates and cups. Even paper cups/plates are harmful and take years to decompose.
* Remain quiet and vigilant. Don’t disturb the tranquility of the nature. Respect wildlife and don’t disturb them in anyway. Also be considerate of other trekkers.
* Please collect and bring any litter/garbage left behind by other careless travellers.
* Don’t light fires unnecessarily and do try to use portable cookers instead of using firewood when camping. If you must, only use firewood on the ground and don’t cut any trees for this.
* Don’t bring any plants back with you or cut any trees/branches unnecessarily..
* Don’t use soap/ shampoo when bathing in natural streams as they contaminate them and kill wildlife.
* Don’t do anything that harms the Mother Nature.

Dunhinda Falls (Badulla), Sri Lanka
Dunhinda is a very popular waterfall in Sri Lanka. It has a height of 64 meters. Therefore it is not leading from its height. But, it is a remarkable waterfall when considering the beauty of it. The name Dunhinda derived from the misty appearance in front of the waterfall during the rainy season.
The source of this waterfall is a water stream called as Badulu Oya which starts at Badulla area.To reach this waterfall it is required to travel in Badulla – Mahiyangana main road. There is a junction known as “Dunhinda Junction” situation about 6 km from Badulla in this road. When travelling form Badulla that place can be easily identified with the sign board with a gate at the right side of the road a footpath starts from that junction towards the waterfall where the people have to walk about 1 km to reach the waterfall.
Before reaching to the main waterfall you can see another waterfall which is known as Punchi Dunhinda. Anyway it is difficult to walk near that waterfall because of you have to go through the forest in mountains.
After completing the distance of 1 km you can see the beauty of the Dunhinda waterfall. Please do not attempt to bath in the water stream since it is very much dangerous.
