Dunmore Cave - County Kilkenny - Ireland
Dunmore Cave - Kilkenny Ireland
Dunmore Cave (from Irish: Dún Mór meaning great fort) is a limestone cave in Ballyfoyle, County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is a show cave open to the public, particularly well known for its rich archaeological discoveries and for being the site of a Viking massacre in 928.
The earliest historical reference to the cave is to be found in the Triads of Ireland, dating from the 14th to the 19th century, where Úam Chnogba, Úam Slángæ and Dearc Fearna are listed under the heading, the three darkest places in Ireland.[6] The last, meaning the Cave of the Alders, is generally thought to be the present Dunmore Cave,[1] while the first two translate as the caves of Knowth and Slaney.[7] Other sources translate the listed locations as Rath Croghan, the cave or crypt of Slane and the Cave of the Ferns.
In the Annals of the Four Masters, dated to the 17th century, Dearc Fearna was recorded as the site of a great Viking massacre in 928 AD:
Godfrey, grandson of Imhar, with the foreigners of Ath Cliath, demolished and plundered Dearc Fearna, where one thousand persons were killed in this year as is stated in the quatrain:
Nine hundred years without sorrow, twenty-eight, it has been proved,
'Since Christ came to our relief, to the plundering of Dearc-Fearna.

We made a last minute trip to go and visit the Dunmore caves in Co. Kilkenny at the start of June. I really enjoyed the tour, the caves have a fascinating history. Well worth the trip if you are near by.
Make sure to wrap up, the caves are a chilly 9 degrees celius all year round.

Our 5th country on our Europe trip!
Ireland was beautiful and had a lot of free outdoor activities we could do. Our favourite walk was One Mans Pass up at Slieve League, definitely don't do this if you are afraid of heights. We visited Dunmore cave which was a great activity and not expensive in Kilkenny down south. We visited two castles Blarney & Leap, both of which I recommend.
Leap castle is known for being one of the most haunted castles in the world. It was a bit off the beaten track but I thoroughly recommend. Sean bought the castle in 1991 and has been restoring it ever since. Built in the 1300's it has quite a colourful past! There is said to be 20 spirits who live happily there with Sean. We emailed Sean a day before we wanted to visit and paid a donation of 6 euros each to walk around and try find some ghost!
In my video you will see a bunch of scenes where there is a blue light, not sure if it was just my camera for the day or spirits, but I hadn't seen it before or since.
At 2:50 on the creepy painting and 2:56 on the back painting you will see a spirit orb or a bug, up to your interpretation!
