Secret Sydney 5: Dunningham Reserve
The popular Bondi to Coogee coastal walk is one of Sydney’s most scenic trails offering the best views of Sydney’s eastern suburbs beaches. Just off the trail one can find Dunningham reserve, a tranquil lookout which shows off the beauty of Australia’s coastline. My name is Lyndon Christie and this is my Secret Sydney.

Coogee (NSW Australia) in Sydney's eastern suburbs is one of the most beautiful and popular surfing beaches in Australia. See it here viewed from old photographs and images from 1900 to 1950 showing Coogee Beach and nearby park-lands and streets including people dressed in old style bathing costumes.

Second video of the serie Sydney from Above featuring Clovelly, Gordons Bay and Coogee.
Clovelly Beach lies between Bronte Beach to the north and Gordon's Bay to the south. It is a small and tranquil beach, located at the mouth of a narrow bay between two rocky ridges. A breakwater at the mouth of the bay provides protection and creates a calm swimming environment. It is particularly popular with family groups and the elderly.
Concrete platforms and promenades have been constructed on both sides of the bay. The promenades are popular sun-baking spots. There are access steps into the water, making Clovelly Beach more like a large ocean pool than a beach. The beach is a very popular snorkelling site with a diverse range of underwater marine life. The beach is home to a large local Blue Groper nicknamed Bluey. The lowest platform on the southern side of the beach contains a 25 x 6 metre saltwater pool. A ramp on the northern side of the beach provides disabled access to the water for people.
Gordon's Bay is south of Clovelly Beach and north of Coogee Beach. Its secluded location is created by the deeply incised gully and sheer sandstone headlands. The reserve consists of a small beach at the head, some remnant heath land vegetation on the north side and a mix of exotic and native plant species on the south side. The site is surrounded by residential development with Dunningham Reserve on top of the southern headland and Clovelly Beach/Gordon's Bay car park on the northern headland.
Gordon's Bay is not patrolled by lifeguards.
Coogee Beach is one of Sydney's most popular beaches attracting millions of visitors each year. The name Coogee is taken from a local Aboriginal word koojah which means smelly place owing to the amount of seaweed that can collect on the beach. But daily beach cleaning by Randwick City Council keeps the beach in pristine condition year-round.
The beach is sheltered by a rocky island called Wedding Cake Island which makes it an ideal swimming beach for families.
There are two rock pools at the northern and southern parts of the beach and just a few minutes walk south of the beach are two more spectacular ocean pools -- McIvers Baths (women and children only) and Wylies Baths.
Coogee Beach is located on Sydney's famous Coastal Walk which stretches from Bondi Beach to Maroubra Beach.

Coogee Beach is on Sydney’s famous Coastal Walkway which stretches from Bondi Beach to Maroubra Beach.
Coogee Beach is in Coogee Bay, a 400 m wide southeast-facing bay, sheltered by a rocky island called Wedding Cake Island which makes it an ideal swimming beach for families and a calmer option than nearby Maroubra Beach.
The name Coogee comes from a local Aboriginal word koojah which means “smelly place” owing to the large amount of seaweed washed on the beach. Randwick City Council maintains the beach in pristine condition year-round with a team daily beach cleaning the beach everyday.
Coogee Beach is spoilt when it comes to rockpools.
There is a rock pool at the northern end (Giles Baths) and a rock pool at the southern end of the beach (Ross Jones Memorial Baths) near the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club.
Just a few minutes walk south of the beach along the Coastal Walkway are two of Sydney’s most spectacular ocean pools – McIvers Baths (women and children only) and Wylie’s Baths.
Coogee Beach has grown from a destination for day trippers in the early 1800s to one of Sydney’s most frequented beaches.
The parks and reserves around Coogee Beach are ideal for a picnic with a range of barbecues and playground equipment.
Coogee Beach is a wonderful place to take kids to, just watch out (if swimming) on the shore dumpers, has a rock pool if you don’t want to go in the surf.
There are a couple of parks around Coogee Beach. Goldstein Reserve, in front of the beach & has open parkland, with some BBQ’s on the northern side.
Grants reserve is on the southern end, & has a playground, BBQ’s & an open park so you can bring your football, cricket set or Frisbee.
On the northern end up on the hill is Dunningham Reserve there are some covered seating there.
If you’re looking to coffee & other treats, you’ll enjoy Coogee Bay Road with an assortment of great restaurants, cafes and ice-cream shops!
Coogee Beach it’s a great place to go, but it’s hard to find parking. There are no parking areas, only street parking, so be prepared to hunt for a parking spot.

IF I COULD TELL YOU NO
I THOUGHT IT BEST YOU DIDN'T KNOW
DON'T SEE IT COMING
THE DARKNESS VISIBLE
BUT WHEN ITS EYES FIX MINE
IT'S SILVER & ITS STONE
I FEEL IT RISING, OH
THE GATHERING STORM
AND WHEN I FEEL A DARKNESS IS A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIGHT IT
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND NOW
YOU DON'T KNOW ME LIKE THIS
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO HIDE IT
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND I PICTURE YOU
SOAKED IN LIGHT
I PICTURE YOU
AND IN YOU I HAVE NO DOUBT
WHEN THE CHAOS CALLS ME OUT
AND IT FEEL IT'S LIKE THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO
I PICTURE YOU
AND THE NIGHT FALLS FAST
I KNOW IT'S HEAVY ON THE SKIN
WILL IT BE EVER THUS?
BARELY VISIBLE
BUT WHEN YOUR EYES FIX MINE
EMBRACING YOUR DENIAL
WHEN I HOLD MY BREATH
THROUGH THE WASTE AND THE WILD
WHEN I FEEL IT RISING
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIGHT IT
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND NOW
YOU DON'T KNOW ME LIKE THIS
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND I
DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIGHT IT
IT'S A HEARTBEAT AWAY
AND I PICTURE YOU
SOAKED IN LIGHT
I PICTURE YOU
AND IN YOU I HAVE NO DOUBT
WHEN THE CHAOS CALLS ME OUT
AND IT FEELS LIKE THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO
I PICTURE YOU

The Blower's Daughter (cover) Auer String Quartet Sydney
Auer String Quartet (Sydney)
auerstringquartet.com
The Auer String Quartet is based in Sydney and specialises in providing high quality wedding ceremony music that is customised to suit the requests of clients. Formed in 2006 by Tamara Auer, a graduate of the Milan Conservatory, the group of two, three or four performers is made up of tertiary music graduates from the Sydney Conservatorium, the University of NSW, ANU, and the Milan Conservatory, Italy.
Available as a quartet (trio plus additional violin), trio (violin, viola and cello), or duo (violin and cello), the group provides suitable music for all types of indoor and outdoor wedding ceremonies.
Many couples like the traditional sound and elegance of a string quartet for their wedding music but also like the idea of having the quartet play arrangements of popular music. Aside from having a large classical repertoire, the Auer String Quartet has worked on arrangements for a vast number of popular songs inspired by groups such as the Vitiman String Quartet and Stringspace String Quartet.
The Auer String Quartet is available to travel all over Sydney, including outer areas, such as the Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley, Bowral and South Coast. Previous engagements have taken the string group to many reputable venues across greater Sydney, including the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney University, Q Station Manly, HMAS Watson, Vaucluse House, Le Montage, The Mint Sydney, Darling Park, Dunbar House Watsons Bay, Blue Mountains Botanical Gardens, Cupitt’s Winery, Killara Golf Club, Monte Sant Angelo Mercy College, Saint Ignatius' College Riverview, Curzon Hall, Hillsong Chapel Baulkham Hills, St Marys Orthodox Church Mays Hill, St Brigids Church Marrickville, Blues Point Reserve, Observatory Hill, Elkington Park Balmain, Dunningham Reserve Coogee.
