Dunrobin Castle
Here is a small video we had the pleasure off shooting at the castle.
Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and the largest in the Northern Highlands with 189 rooms. Dunrobin Castle is also one of Britain's oldest continuously inhabited houses dating back to the early 1300s, home to the Earls and later, the Dukes of Sutherland.
The Castle, which resembles a French château with its towering conical spires, has seen the architectural influences of Sir Charles Barry, who designed London’s Houses of Parliament, and Scotland’s own Sir Robert Lorimer. The Castle was used as a naval hospital during the First World War and as a boys’ boarding school from 1965 to 1972.
Dunrobin Castle is on the east coast of the Northern Highlands overlooking the Moray Firth, just north of the villages of Golspie and Dornoch (famous for its cathedral and Royal Dornoch Golf Club).
Dunrobin Castle is open annually from 1st April to 15th October.

Dunrobin Castle is a stately home in Sutherland, in the Highland area of Scotland, and the family seat of the Earl of Sutherland and the Clan Sutherland. It is located 1 mile (1.6 km) north of Golspie, and approximately 5 miles (8.0 km) south of Brora, overlooking the Dornoch Firth.
Dunrobin's origins lie in the Middle Ages, but most of the present building and the gardens were added by Sir Charles Barry between 1835 and 1850. Some of the original building is visible in the interior courtyard, despite a number of expansions and alterations that made it the largest house in the north of Scotland. After being used as a boarding school for seven years, it is now open to the public.

Clan Sutherland
Sutherland is a highland Scottish clan originating in the North of Scotland in the district of Sutherland. The clan was thought to have been started by a Flemish nobleman known as Freskin. It is possible that Freskin was a warlord employed by the Norman Kings during the Norman conquest of Scotland, to pacify its subjects. Freskin’s grandson Hugh de Moravia was granted land in the district of Sutherland which translates into land to the south. Hugh’s children began to adopt the surname.
The motto of the Sutherland clan is Sans Peur meaning without fear. The crest of the clan features a cat-a-mountian salient proper.
When the 18th Earl of Sutherland died in 1766 he had no male heir. A legal battle ensued over the succession of the title between his daughter Elizabeth and George Sutherland of Forse, who was in the direct male line of the original Earls of Sutherland. The case was heard by the house of Lords and in 1771 they decided in favor of Elizabeth.
The families living in Clan Sutherland’s territory were particulary hard hit by the Highland Clearances. The Duke of Sutherland at the time decided that the interior of Sutherland was better suited to sheep farming rather than human occupation. Thousands of members of the Sutherland Clan were evicted from their lands and many settled in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The historic seat of the clan is the Dunrobin Castle located in Golspie, Scotland. The house and grounds of the castle are open to the public. A clan room in the castle has been set aside for a repository for the history of the clan. The Sutherland still retain private residences within the castle walls.
The Clan Sutherland society was founded in 1897 and reconstituted in 1977 is headquartered in Dunrobin Castle. The society plans world wide gatherings and events. Currently the Society claims members from 13 countries.

Road Trip Driveway To Dunrobin Castle Scotland
Tour Scotland travel video of a wee road trip up the tree lined driveway to Dunrobin Castle in the Northern Highlands of Sutherland. This is the family seat of the Earl of Sutherland and the Clan Sutherland. It is located one mile North of Golspie, and approximately five miles South of Brora, overlooking the Dornoch Firth. The lands of Sutherland were acquired before 1211, by Hugh, Lord of Duffus, grandson of the Flemish nobleman Freskin. The Earldom of Sutherland was created around 1235 for Hugh's son, William, surmised to have descended from the House of Moray by the female line. The castle may have been built on the site of an early medieval fort, but the oldest surviving portion, with an iron yett, is first mentioned in 1401. The earliest castle was a square keep with walls over 6 feet thick. Unusually, the ceilings of each floor were formed by stone vaults rather than being timber. The castle is thought to be named after Robert, the 6th Earl of Sutherland who died in 1427. During the Jacobite Rising of 1745, the Jacobites under Charles Edward Stuart stormed Dunrobin Castle without warning, because the Clan Sutherland supported the British government. The 17th Earl of Sutherland, who had changed his surname from Gordon to Sutherland, narrowly escaped them, exiting through a back door. He sailed for Aberdeen where he joined the Duke of Cumberland's army. On the death of the 18th Earl in 1766, the house passed to his daughter, Elizabeth, who married the politician George Leveson Gower, later created 1st Duke of Sutherland. In 1785, the house was altered and extended again. In 1915, the building was in use as a naval hospital when fire damaged much of the interior, but was confined to the newer additions by Barry. Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer was engaged to renovate the house following the First World War. When the 5th Duke died in 1963, the Earldom and the house went to his niece, the current Countess of Sutherland, while the Dukedom had to pass to a male heir and went to John Egerton, Earl of Ellesmere. Between 1965 and 1972, the house became a boarding school for boys, taking on forty boys and five teachers in its first year. Since 1973, the house and grounds have been open to the public, with private accommodation retained for the use of the Sutherland family.
