Piacenza Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Piacenza, Italy. It was built between 1122 and 1233 and is one of the most valuable examples of a Romanesque cathedral in northern Italy. The dedication is to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and to Saint Justina. It is the seat of the diocese of Piacenza-Bobbio.
The cathedral has a total external length of 85 m, and a façade height of 32 m, dimensions which make it the largest Romanesque church in Emilia-Romagna. The façade, in Veronese pink marble and gilded stone, is horizontally divided by a gallery that dominates the three portals, decorated with capitals and Romanesque statues.
The interior has a nave and two aisles, divided by twenty-five massive pillars. Its noteworthy frescoes were made in the 14th-16th centuries by Camillo Procaccini and Ludovico Carracci, while the frescos inside the dome are by Pier Francesco Mazzucchelli, il Morazzone, and Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, best known as Guercino. The presbytery has a wooden sculpture from 1479, wooden choirstalls by Giangiacomo da Genova (1471) and 15th-century statues of the Lombard school.
Few remains can be traced of the earlier paleochristian basilica, as Piacenza was razed by Totila in 546, during the Gothic War. The crypt, on the Greek cross plan, has 108 Romanesque small columns and is home to the relics of Santa Giustina, Saint Justina of Padua, who was co-patron of Piacenza from the ninth century; to her was dedicated the first cathedral, Domus Justinae, which collapsed in 1117 after an earthquake. During its history the cathedral was host to several minor composers as maestro di capella including Francesco Maria Bazzani, and Giuseppe Nicolini.

DUOMO DI BOBBIO (VAL TREBBIA, PIACENZA, ITALY)
Il duomo di Bobbio, o concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, è una chiesa parrocchiale di Bobbio, in Val Trebbia in provincia di Piacenza, cattedrale fino al 1986 della diocesi di Bobbio, ora concattedrale della diocesi di Piacenza-Bobbio e sede del vicariato di Bobbio, Alta Val Trebbia, Aveto e Oltre Penice. Sorge nel centro del tessuto urbano della cittadina che si formò poco per volta attorno alla vasta area fra l'abbazia di S.Colombano e la piazza del Duomo: si tratta del borgo medioevale detto borgo intrinseco, l'odierno centro storico, che conservò l'originale denominazione di Bobium dal nome di un torrente vicino. La storia della nascita della cattedrale si connette con la nascita della diocesi di Bobbio come separata dal territorio abbaziale: la sede vescovile di Bobbio nacque nel 1014 per opera dell'abate e poi vescovo Pietroaldo (999-1017) che risiedeva nell'abbazia. L'unione delle due cariche venne scissa dopo la morte di questi. Nel 1017 il nuovo vescovo Attone decise di spostarsi nell'antica e piccola basilica di S.Pietro e nel 1075 il vescovo conte Guarnerio (1073-1095) spostò la sede della diocesi nella nuova cattedrale. La chiesa in stile romanico fu costruita sopra i resti di un edificio precedente anteriore al 1000. Fotografie scattate martedì 27 agosto 2013.

Piacenza è una città dell'Emilia-Romagna, in Italia. Nella centrale Piazza Cavalli sono presenti due statue equestri e il Palazzo Gotico medievale. Un angelo di rame ruota in cima al campanile del Duomo di Piacenza. La vicina Basilica di Sant'Antonino ha una torre a 8 facciate e affreschi del XVII secolo, oltre a un portale, chiamato Porta del Paradiso, con un rosone. I Musei civici di Palazzo Farnese ospitano sculture e armi.
Per conoscere meglio le chiese di Piacenza ci vorrebbe una giornata dedicata solo ad esse.
E’ però una città anche ricca di storia, la si può vedere nei suoi palazzi e nei monumenti, nei musei e in alcune gallerie d’arte, non senza buttare un occhio anche ai negozi e alle botteghe d’artigianato antiche e moderne che costellano il centro.

Piacenza is a city in Italy’s Emilia Romagna region. In its central Piazza Cavalli are 2 equestrian statues and the medieval Gothic Palace. A copper angel rotates atop the bell tower of Piacenza Cathedral. The nearby Sant’Antonino Basilica has an 8-sided tower and 17th-century frescoes, plus a portal known as Heaven’s Gate, with a rose window. The Farnese Palazzo Civic Museums house sculptures and weapons.
Located in the centre of the Padana Valley, Piacenza is on the right bank of the river Po, only 67 Km from Milan. Along the final part of the ancient Via Emilia, the town is located in the Northernmost and Westernmost part of the Emilia region. This quiet, provincial town, easy to live in and dedicated to the pleasures of good food, is also characterised by small treasures, and memories of a historically rich past, like its Cathedral, ‘Palazzo Gotico’, ‘Palazzo Farnese’. Not to mention the wonderful noble mansions, its several churches and the narrow streets of the centre, which, though appearing severe, hide unexpected surprises. Any season is good to go to Piacenza. However, we recommend spring and autumn, when the mild climate makes walking along its streets more pleasant.
Undoubtedly, besides the two squares, ‘Piazza Duomo’ and ‘Piazza Cavalli’, the latter being the emblem of the city with the two equestrian statues by Mochi on the background of ‘Palazzo Gotico’, further sites are worth visiting : the Romanesque ‘Sant’Antonino ’ Basilica, one of the pilgrims’ stations along the Via Francigena, with its ‘Porta del Paradiso’ (Heaven’s Gate), ‘ Santa Maria di Campagna’ church which preserves, among others, frescoes by Pordenone and San Savino Basilica with the 12th century mosaics representing the cycle of the months.
Among the many places to visit in the streets of the city centre, San Sisto church, hidden from sight on purpose, is rich in frescoes, wrought iron works and 18th century decorations, while the Municipal Theatre, dedicated to Verdi and built by Lotario Tomba is like a miniature ‘Teatro alla Scala’.
Another remarkable place to visit is the beautiful ‘Palazzo Farnese’, built by Vignola, where Palazzo Farnese Municipal Museums are located; here it is possible to admire the Etruscan liver, Botticelli’s Tondo, while Alberoni Art Gallery displays the famous ‘Ecce Homo’ by Antonello da Messina.
You can’t leave Piacenza without visiting Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery, which offers a complete view of Italian figurative art starting from the second half of the 19th century. Besides the rich Opera and Drama season at Piacenza’s Municipal Theatre, Festival del Diritto (Law Festival) , held in September, has become a nationally important event.

IL DUOMO DELLA CITTA' DI PIACENZA
Purtroppo le immagini lasciano molto a desiderare ( ho usato una comune DGT senza ripresa notturna ), in ogni modo, una visita il Duomo di Piacenza la merita. L'interno è maestoso, con un sacco di gioielli da scoprire. Prima fra tutti la Cripta che purtroppo non ho filmato poichè il parroco stava Pregando il Santo Rosario. Erano le 08:00 del Mattino del 24-07-2008. Voi, però potete visitare questa stupenda città.
