The Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta and San Pantaleone is the main Catholic place of worship in Ravello , in the province of Salerno ; until 1818, the bishopric seat of the diocese of Ravello , is currently the seat of the homonymous parish belonging to the archdiocese of Amalfi-Cava de 'Tirreni. On 10 July 1918 Pope Benedict XV raised the former cathedral to the rank of minor basilica .
It was founded in 1086 - 1087 on the model of the abbey of Montecassino : the Roman architraves of re-employment dates back to this period, visible on the three doors in the façade. Remarkable is the central portal, with bronze tiles, by Barisano da Trani dated 1179 , donated by Sergio Muscettola, husband of Sigilgaida Pironti.
The Museo dell'Opera is housed in the rooms of the crypt. It houses a collection of ancient stone materials, Roman cinerary urns and Christian reliquaries. Of particular interest are some of the surviving sculptural elements of the medieval bestiary that composed the original ciborium (1279) of the cathedral. In the 18th century the portico in front of the façade was demolished (four columns remain). In the same century, the interior had been redecorated with baroque stuccos, later removed (they have been preserved only in the transept and in the apse).
Within two splendid ambos with marble inlays enrich facing each: to the right the ' ambo of the Gospel , opera Nicola di Bartolomeo from Foggia ( 1272 ), and left another Byzantine derivation, with the biblical episode depiction of the prophet Jonah and of the sea monster, donated by the second bishop of Ravello ( 1130 ). In the seventeenth-century chapel to the left of the presbytery is kept, according to tradition, the ampoule of the blood of St. Pantaleone , relic present in Ravello as early as 1112 and which, every year, presents the phenomenon of liquefaction.

DUOMO DI RAVELLO, ITALIA
The Duomo or Cathedral of Ravello, which stands on a high podium in piazza del Vescovado, is dedicated to S.Pantaleone and was founded in 1086 or 1087 by the first bishop of Ravello.
The bell tower, at the bottom of the right side of the church, was built in the 13th century..
Rebuilt in its present form in the 12th century, the Duomo was remodeled in 1786, when the portico that preceded its simple façade was demolished (only four columns remain). The lintels of the three doors are made of marble frames. In the middle is the precious bronze door of Barisano da Trani.
The door is divided into 54 panels (one of them has the date, 1179) depicting saints, stories of the Passion and two masks.
The interior, with three naves divided by ancient columns and pillars, has been completely changed in a restoration completed in the 1970’s which suppressed the vaults and stuccoes, (a few traces are left in the transept).
To the right of the entrance, at the bottom on the inner wall of the facade, there are traces of ancient frescoes.
In the middle of the left nave, is the ambo, built in 1130 by the bishop of Ravello.
It is significant both for its Byzantine origin and for being the sole example of such style in all of southern Italy. It is decorated with 13th century mosaics depicting the death and resurrection of Christ. It faces a richly decorated pulpit that bears inscriptions with the name of the artist (Niccolò di Bartolomeo) and the date: 1272.
The marble case is decorated with rectangular marble columns, mosaics and elegant friezes and is supported by six spiral columns, also decorated with mosaics, and the roaring of young lions at the base.
From the right transept you enter into the Sacristy, where there is a painting from the beginning of the 14th century representing a Madonna with Child, Saint Sebastiana and Mary Magdalene; another painting with the Archangel Michael, vestments from the 17th to the 19th century and a collection of scrolls.
In the Cripta del Museo della Cattedrale, or Crypt of the Museum of the Cathedral there are carvings and jewlery from various eras, Roman sarcophagi, 13th and 14th century tombstones, and various fragments decorated with 12th century mosaics.

Ravello, a resort town set 365 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea by Italy’s Amalfi Coast, is home to iconic cliffside gardens. The 13th-century, Moorish-style Villa Rufolo offers far-reaching views from its terraced gardens, and hosts indoor and outdoor concerts during the popular summertime Ravello Festival. Villa Cimbrone, a medieval-style estate perched on a steep outcrop, is surrounded by another celebrated garden.
Ravello is a town and comune situated above the Amalfi Coast in the province of Salerno, Campania, southern Italy, with approximately 2,500 inhabitants. Its scenic location makes it a popular tourist destination, and earned it a listing as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Ravello was founded in the 5th century as a shelter place against the barbarian invasions which marked the end of the Western Roman Empire. In the 9th century Ravello was an important town of the maritime Republic of Amalfi. It was a producer of wool from its surrounding country that was dyed in the town and an important trading power in the Mediterranean between 839 and around 1200.

The Duomo di Ravello (it) (Cathedral) of Ravello: the central nave contains the Pulpit of the Gospels, on the right of the central nave, created in 1272 by Nicolò di Bartolomeo from Foggia.
Villa Rufolo (1270), built by Nicola Rufolo, one of the richest Patricians of Ravello, on a ledge and it has become a famous attraction for thousands of visitors. The villa was mentioned by Giovanni Boccaccio in his Decameron and it is the place where Richard Wagner in 1880 was inspired for the stage design of his opera Parsifal.
Villa Cimbrone, known for its Terrace of the Infinite.
The church of San Giovanni del Toro (Saint John of the Bull) dating to before the year 1000. The church contains the Bove pulpit, dateable to 1200–1230, incorporated as mosaic fragments Raqqa bacini.
The small church of Santa Maria a Gradillo (11th century). It has a basilica plan, with an apse and two isles.
Sanctuary of Sts. Cosmas and Damian (14th century)
La Rondinaia (The Swallow's Nest), built in the 1930s on a cliff face, the villa was the Italian residence of Gore Vidal until 2004.
The town has served historically as a destination for artists, musicians, and writers, including Giovanni Boccaccio, Richard Wagner, Edvard Grieg, M. C. Escher, Virginia Woolf, Greta Garbo, Gore Vidal, André Gide, Joan Mirò, Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Graham Greene, Jacqueline Kennedy, Leonard Bernstein and Sara Teasdale (who mentioned it in her prefatory dedication in Love Songs).
Every year in the summer months, the Ravello Festival takes place. It began in 1953 in honour of Richard Wagner. The 1953 film Beat the Devil, directed by John Huston and starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones, and Gina Lollobrigida in her English language debut, was shot in Ravello.
