Insect Zoo Comes to DuPage Children’s Museum

The DuPage Children’s Museum was abuzz with excitement as some kids got the chance to get up close with some creepy crawlies.

Experts from Anderson Pest Solutions were on hand with their collection of insects to share with the kids.

On display were Madagascar hissing cockroaches, desert millipedes, and an Asian praying mantis, among others.

Anderson Pest Solutions’ Mark Mayer said he enjoys seeing the kids learn about insects they wouldn’t normally encounter in Illinois.

“The kids love them. They really do,” said Mayer. “Most of the parents are a little skeptical at times, but the children really like to handle them. They’re not afraid of them at all for the most part.”

The insect zoo will return to the DuPage Children’s Museum November 14.

Naperville Home to Top Schools

Our city recently topped another list, and with school right around the corner – it’s one to celebrate.

In a recent study done by Niche, Naperville is home to the second best public schools in the country. Arlington, Virginia nabbed the top spot.

The annual ranking was based on state test scores, SAT and ACT scores, graduation rates, teacher quality and student/ parent reviews.

And in Newsweek’s list of top public high schools in America, both Waubonsie and Neuqua Valley earned a spot - with Waubonsie coming in at 260 and Neuqua Valley 154th.

Naperville has a graduation rate of 93.8% - more than 10% above the national average of 82.2%.

Naperville was also recently named the Best City in Illinois, the Wealthiest in the Midwest and one of the Safest Cities to Raise a Child.

Kids Identification and Safety Seat Event

Parents got car seats checked for proper installation and identification cards for younger kids at the Kid's Identification and Safety Seat event.

The Illinois Tollway and Illinois State Police District 15 hosted the Kid’s Identification and Safety Seat, or K.I.S.S, event at the DuPage Children’s Museum.

The free event allowed parents to have their car seats or booster seats checked to make sure they are installed correctly.

Education Officer Duane Chappell has found that about 90 percent of seats they check are installed improperly.

This can happen because of common mistakes.

“Some common mistakes that we see with installations have to do with positioning. That’s the first mistake we see when we open up the car door. The straps in the car seat are sometimes mispositioned for the angle of the child or the size of the child,” said Chappell. “One more that we commonly see is extra devices or pillows or cushions trying to help position the car seat in the vehicle when if it’s installed properly, you shouldn’t need anything in there.”

The most important piece of advice is to seek help at your local police or fire department if you don’t know how to install your car seat.

Parents were also able to create identification cards for younger children, which can help in the case they get lost.

Naperville is a suburb of Chicago, located in DuPage and Will counties in the State of Illinois. Naperville was voted the second-best place to live in the United States by Money magazine in 2006. It was rated 1st on the list of best cities for early retirement in 2013 by Kiplinger. In a 2010 study, Naperville was named the wealthiest city in the Midwest and eleventh in the nation with a population over 75,000. It was ranked among the nation's safest cities by USAToday. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 141,853, which was estimated to have increased to 144,864 by July 2013. It is the fifth-largest city in Illinois, preceded by Chicago, Aurora, Rockford, and Joliet. Approximately 95,000 Napervillians live on the DuPage County side, while about 50,000 reside on the Will County side.

How Climate Change Is Affecting DuPage County

Climate Change in DuPage County

Recently about 400 community members gathered at Northern Illinois University’s Naperville Campus for the DuPage Environmental Summit.

The 15th annual event hosted by the Conservation Foundation and DuPage County discussed how climate change is affecting the local area.

A topic discussed at the event was the impact flooding has in DuPage County. One exhibit, of the 20 that were there, illustrated how storm water disperses throughout high area, into the lower sections.

“This is very important to have to illustrate the different issues as it relates to storm water,” said Kurt Hanson, an environmental specialist at Christopher B. Burke Engineering. “Both storm water capacity and the location of where you will or will not want to build.”

After community members toured other exhibits, Dr. Douglas Stotz, a senior conservation ecologist at the Field Museum, gave a presentation on climate change.

Climate Change Impact

He said in the last 30 years we’ve seen an increase of one degree in the Chicago land area, but estimates by the end of the century that number could be up to 10.

“Even if we go great with our use of carbon tomorrow, which there’s no evidence that will happen, we have climate change built into the system. So we’ll look at probably 4-5 degree regardless,” said Stotz.

Stotz said using public transportation and riding a bicycle when the weather permits, are ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

Camp EDGE

Canoeing is a common activity at many summer camps, but what about volunteering at an animal shelter? At Camp E.D.G.E., Educate, Develop, Give, Experience, besides the normal fun stuff, campers learn life lessons like leadership, team building and volunteerism.

When you go to the zoo or laser tag, there's not much more that you get out of your day other than being out of the house, said Sam Scott, a Counselor at Camp E.D.G.E. We do volunteering, serving, team building, but we also get to do adventure stuff like canoeing. That's what really separates us getting to do the fun stuff and going beyond with becoming role models.

Camp E.D.G.E. is three, weeklong camps. Each session is different, combining fun in the sun with learning outside of the classroom.

When we caught up to the campers, they were learning team building by helping each other climb over a wall, and earlier in the week they volunteered at the Naperville Area Humane Society.

We pet a lot of the dogs and played with the kittens, said Peyton Metry, 12 years old.

We do a ton of fun stuff and we help people. We help animals and all that. It makes you feel good that I help them, said David Shefcik, age 11.

It seems like it might be a little bit of a drag to the kids, especially when they knew we were picking up poop yesterday at the Humane Society, but after they got to play with some puppies they were all over it, hands and knees wiping up the kennel. It was awesome, said Scott.

This is the second year for camp E.D.G.E., and while it has grown, many of the kids like the smaller size.

Most of the other camps I've been to this summer and previous summers kind of are too large to function as a single unit like Camp E.D.G.E. does, said Jakob Myers, age 14. I think the size of Camp E.D.G.E. makes it easier to do the activities that we do since the scale doesn't have to be as large. I've made so many great friends here at Camp E.D.G.E. that I'm really thankful to be here.

While some of it is fun and games, at the end of the day, Camp E.D.G.E. is all about setting kids up for a lifelong passion in serving others.

It's all about balance and if we can teach them that at a really young age, I can't wait to see where they're at and what sort of resumes they have going into college. It's just a great place to start, said Scott.


Camp E.D.G.E. will have a session starting on June 24 and the final week beginning July 8.

Kids will be volunteering with the DuPage Children's Museum and Feed My Starving Children, as well as fun activities like geocaching and visiting Starved Rock.

Rep. Butler visits the Illinois State Police Museum in Springfield

Opened in 2005, the dream of the Illinois State Police Heritage Foundation became a reality in 2004 when property was purchased and construction began on the ISPHF Museum. A building to house exhibits and vehicles owned by the foundation was constructed and two existing houses were renovated for use as an office and archive storage.

Between 2006 and 2009 exhibits were changed and new ones were added to the museum. The property to the east became available and was added to the existing property. During 2010 the two small houses used for office and storage space were torn down. The brown house is now the ISPHF office. All this was accomplished through donations and sales of merchandise.
