Dupath Holy Well Chapel, Callington, Cornwall, UK
Under the guardianship of English Heritage, and managed by the Cornwall Heritage Trust, Dupath well is a small chapel-like building and was built in about 1510 by the Augustinian canons of the nearby priory of St Germans, to whom the site belonged. The architecture of the well-house is typical of the late 15th and early 16th centuries in a notably 'Celtic' style.
At one time the spring at Dupath was believed to cure whooping cough. In addition to its role in healing the sick, the spring was used on occasion for baptisms. One grim tale associated with Dupath recounts that two Saxons – Colan (Cornish for heart or courage) and Gottlieb – fought a duel there for a lady’s hand. But the maiden went unmarried: Colan was killed outright and Gottlieb fatally wounded, though some versions say he died later of ‘impatience.
Dupath Well
Dupath Well is a very large and impressive holy well at the back of Dupath Farm near Callington in Cornwall. The holy well has been described as the finest and best holy well in Cornwall with the well house being not just the finest in Cornwall but one of the finest in the British Isles. The well house is built like a chapel and even has a door and a turret. The well is dedicated to St Ethelred. The well house was built in around 1510 by the Augustinian canons from St Germans Priory. It was over a holy well which was filled by an underground spring which opens close to the door. It is believed that the well cured whooping cough and it is thought that the well was also used for baptisms. A well known legend attached with Dupath Well is that this was the site of a duel by two people, Colan and Gottlieb, which was for a lady however Colan was killed and Gottlieb fatally wounded so the lady remained unmarried and without a partner after all. The construction of the spring flow in the well is that it rises close to the door, goes down a small channel and into a larger well pool (the holy well itself) inside the well house at the back. It then overflows through a hole at the back and into a round trough outside at the back of the well house. The well really is worth a visit and is a beautiful place.
The well is signposted from the A388 and there is parking on Dupath Farm, you will then need to walk through the farmyard (all public right of way) to the well. The well is in the care of the Cornwall Heritage Trust.
